He must be trying to attain his "original" vision with this movie as well, which is completely bloody stupid. Does he not realise that people will hate him even more for this, even though he is just changing a few things, either cosmetically or completely...
I say he must die before he does try to change Indiana Jones in the future... >:(

Well he's going to replace indy's whip with a light saber, how obvious... crap!
I was watching comedy central when I saw a commercial for southpark or sumptin like that where lucas changed all weapons to walkie talkies, changed wookie to hair challenged being, and jawa to little people.
Im looking forward to see a 60 year old guy pretend to be in 1943
That South Park was funny. In it, they watch the E.T. new edition where they change the guns to walkie-talkies and stuff, which is okay. But then they saw a commercial for his new edition of Saving Private Ryan where they changed all the guns to walkie-talkies and all the word "Nazis" to "People with political differences." Then he was going to change around Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the kids went to stop him. And the ending was a lot like the ending of Raiders, where he showed the film and it killed everyone except for the kids who kept their eyes closed.

Um, they actually DID do that. That wasn't a joke. :-\

I thought he was 63. and if so. that means HF was already born by the time the film "started". well. it seemed ironic to me.
I think people are a little too eager to jump on everything Lucas does these days - most of those changes *do* look like improvements to my eyes. Only the all-CGI shots and that rolling eyes thing set the quality control warning alarms in my head ringing.
But does drive me crazy that he refuses to release the original versions of all these films. Doesn't he realise that so much of the hatred he gets nowadays would just dissapear if he'd only let the public make their own choice between the old and the new? I mean, it's not as if releasing alternate versions is any kind of big deal nowadays.
Ever hear about that "Brazil" DVD set which contained the entire studio-butchered edit of the film? Terry Gilliam flat out HATED that version of the film, but he was happy to include it on the DVD just because of the historical curiosity value. Why can't Lucas have that kind of attitude? It just seems bizarre to me. He's an odd man.
Heh, it seems that George "No-Neck" Lucas seems to be obsessed with tinkering with his movies. I better go out and rent the original THX (if available) to see it, and then watch the Jar-Jar-ed version.
Is this movie coming out in the theaters or just on dvd?
Yeah, I know they edited ET, which is what I meant by saying that was okay. I mean, it is a kids movie, so removing the guns was a reasonable move, but their are limits to what needs editing.
It's almost like he has some sort of real issue about leaving this world before his legacy is PERFECT.
I don't have a problem with director's cuts, a lot of movies have them. As long as the original is released as well because, I'm sorry, but once you release something, you live with it. It's out there in the public domain and you just don't have the right to -own- it the way he wants. Let the public make their own decisions. Release another version, release 10 other versions if you like, but leave the original out there too.
Goddamn, I haven't seen that Southpark episode yet! Argh, it sounds great!

Well, that's not really the attitude we want Lucas to have. Lucas essentially DOES want to put the "studio-butchered" version out, and nothing else. You could sort of equate the US edit of Brazil to Lucas' revisionist tendencies.
The South Park episode is called 'Free Hat', it's from Season 6, and it's one of my favourite ever! Definitely try and catch then whenever it's on.
As for director's cuts, I'm generally not a big fan of them but I can tolerate them if they're the alternative. Lucas is actually being very revisionist, trying to erase his old films from memory and replace them with his new, 'better' versions, which is wrong. The original Star Wars trilogy were classics as released and seen in theatres, and you can't buy them legitimately anymore, which is just plain wrong.
Some good examples of the use of director's cuts are Peter Jackson's Extended Edition 'Lord Of The Rings' films. He always says these are neither better nor worse than the shorter theatrical edits but are just designed for home viewing, where you can watch a DVD over a few nights. The longer length allows for more stuff from the books, more character and non-crucial scenes. And, importantly, you can still buy the theatrical cuts if you so wish (I don't, but it's good they're there). This is a good approach to alternate cuts and has been the plan from the start.
Also the recent 'Alien' series DVDs, I've got the first two films and they both have the choice of watching the Theatrical or Directors' Cuts, which is really great, and I wish more would do that when a Director's Cut has been made. When it's your only choice you're sort of being deprived of the genuine article from film history, which I find a bit frustrating. 'Director's Cut' isn't a selling-point for me, unless I have the original too.
I think Lucas genuinely does think he's improving these films but in reality he's meddling with proven much-loved classics, and damaging his legacy. He just looks like a fussy, misguided perfectionist who could put that effort into making his new films better.
you know i posted in this thread without actually asking what is THX-1138? what was it about?
It was George Lucas' first studio film. It was based on a short film of his that won a student prize, and Warner Brothers financed the feature length version. It was also the first film produced by American Zoetrope, which was a production company created by Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola.
Here's the IMDB link:

As for director's cuts, some I likes and some I don't likes. For example, I like the director's cut of Blade Runner, but the director's cut of Cinema Paradiso is way too long.

What I mean is I wish Lucas had the attitude that *every* version of the film released is worth making available just for the historical value. The US Brazil set has three different versions of the film on it, I think, and so will the Blade Runner special edition set, if they ever manage to release the damn thing. Those are what I would call good DVD sets. In contrast, I don't think it's known whether high quality prints of the original Star Wars trilogy even exist any more.
The really ironic thing is that Lucas is a board member of Martin Scorsese's film preservation foundation. He so crazy! Still, I can't help admiring his apparent complete lack of interest in what other people think of him.

I think I already know the answer, but does anyone know whether this short will be included on the new THX DVD?
I bought ET on dvd because it had both the original version released in 1982 and the 20th anniversary version. I thought it was a really nice thing to do, and it's really funny to see those guys holding walkie-talkies (if you've seen the new version) which really changes the whole movie. However, I think that some of the more subtle edits in the movie were fine, like polishing the blue screen matting and redoing the spaceship. They pretty much have the same mood as the original movie.... they didn't add like extra scenes.. well, those deleted scenes were added, but they were shot back then, not imagined years later and added into the movie. (edit: I take that back... they should have stayed as deleted scenes!)
I wish they could just do that with Star Wars or THX-1138. All I would be happy with if they took the original star wars and polished all of the blue screen shots and lightsabers and sound and whatnot, but not add or change anything else! I hated that jabba the hutt scene, everything that was told there was told in the Greedo scene, which was changed so that greedo accidentally pulled the trigger? uhh..ok.
I love that episode of South Park where they go see.. Star Wars, was it? they had trailers for ET and Saving Private Ryan, and it was just hilarious!
I can always Import Star Wars into my computer and edit out what they changed and make it like the original... hey, I should do that! :D
I liked in that episode when Matt Stone and Trey Parker showed their true vision of the first episode, Cartman Gets an Anal Probe. :P
You know what movie has a great director's cut? Army of Darkness. It's, like, the pinnacle of director's cut awesome.
You know how I feel about George Lucas and his director's cuts? I say, they're his movies and if he wants to ruin 'em, let him. If he doesn't want to release the original classics, fine by me. I'd rather give my money to someone who respects their works and their audience.
As far as I can see, all these shots are just digital enhancements.. But I can also understand why some are angry because the older versions are never available.. Which is sad.. But I really think this cut looks very awesome... It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.
Maybe if I knew this film existed before reading this post, I'd be a little more upset.. But I've never seen THX OR ET for that matter, so enhanced versions are probably more appealing to me.. I for one don"t want to watch oversaturated, grainy, 30 year old film quality movies... Yes, it's nostalgic.. But for some reason I like new shiny things....
But that's just me.. But they really should release a DVD with the untouched theatrical cut, and the spiffed up cut.. So people can compare.. Blade Runner should/is? doing it.. Aliens anthology did it.. AOD did it... I see your point now that George should stop trying to tweak his films and convince people the other versions never existed.. It's much more interesting to see the differences and watch the old versions just to go back.. Apparently Lucas is trying to go back and erase any of his mistakes... And prove that he's some sort of super human movie creator.. But he really isn't, no matter how pretty his films look.
He can't direct acting, he's rarely original.. and he franchises EVERYTHING!
I was about to argue that and say that American Grafitti wasn't a franchise, but then I remembered there was a sequel to it. ::)
