Title: Tim Schafer's Brütal Legend
Post by: Tiki on Sat 13/10/2007 16:47:06
Double Fine's next game has been announced!
Apparently, Tim Schafer and Jack Black are going to be collaborating on "Brütal Legend," though to what extent I have no idea

There are 5 or 6 pages from a magazine in there, a very interesting read.

This is lookin' pretty good.

Am I the only one who finds that umlaut really stupid? And yes, I am aware of Spin̈al Tap.

Somehow reminds me of obscure metal bands who feel their names sound more 'hardcore' when they replace a, o and U(the letter) with umlauts (Crüxshadows, I'm looking at you  ;)).

/EDIT: U(as letter) I wrote and U(as letter) I meant.

This game looks f'ing sweet! :o

It looks so creative, and the art is so stylized, something missing from a lot of 3D games.

I'd say you probably would be in the minority if you actually come out and say that Dom (as most people wouldn't do something so against-the-norm)...Personally I did like the game...which because my disc is scratched I still haven't been able to finish (quit freezing! >:().

I wouldn't hold it against you if you didn't like it. Different people have different taste in games, so if you didn't like it then so be it. It's not like we're talking about Monkey Island here...:=...it's safe to not find Psychonauts enjoyable.

I wouldn't say that I'm 'überthrilled' just because this is Tim Schafer's new game...but if it looks decent once it's released I may try it out.

I 'liked' Psychonauts, but I'm not going to say it was the greatest game ever or anything close to it.  As far as this new game goes, I really, really dislike Jack Black so I'm finding it very difficult to be interested in a game that features his simpering, nasal voice for 8-10 hours.

Well, it's intended to be a parody of its absurd use in heavy metal bands/songs; but it's certainly debatable whether the effect is achieved or it simply comes across as the same stupidity.

I've never played Psychönauts, but I might give it a go after what I've heard about it.

Psychonauts is definitely worth playing, but while you do so keep in mind that it's (1) not an adventure game and (2) not very high budget. If you can overlook its lack of polish you may really enjoy it.

Umlauts aside, I feel I'm not left with a enough of an impression to know what to expect. All previous Tim Schafer games have had their share of heavy-handed satire, but they generally feel balanced. The focus is always on a well-told story with engaging characters. This review told me plenty about the setting. But are we looking at a fluffy satire/tribute with shallow characters, or is the story going to be as central as it was in previous releases?

I look forward to learning more about the project. It seems like whether or not I like it is going to hinge on the quality of the execution.

On a side note, it's nice to see Double Fine now has the resources to take on a project of this size. I wish they'd had this much funding when they made Psychonauts...
