Underrated bands? I'll have to say Third world and Type O Negative. I'm really into other kinds of music... But I listen to these too, And It's very hard to find music by Third world, which I would consider makes them not so known. I might be wrong, since the music sounds older than me. :P

I would say Kyuss - Great, great band that in my opinion gave the whole Stoner Rock-movement a worthy sound, and unfortunately split up after their forth full-length album, "...And the Cirkus Leaves Town".
I still love what Josh Homme is doing nowadays in Queens of The Stone Age, but some of the stuff Kyuss did was... ...Just amazing...
Listen to songs like "Catamaran", "One Inch Man", "El Rodeo", "Tangy Zizzle", "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop", "Allen's Wrench" and many, many more...

Another hardrock band of the 70's that never got far enough attention is Nazareth.
They did some stuff that was definately as heavy as what giants such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath was doing, but still they are rather overlooked today.

Peter Thomas, I don't think anything else really matters except whether you like the music or not. I don't understand how it makes the music less enjoyable if it was made for money or for the music. It sounds the same.

That is so true.

So many people (I know a lot of people like this) say that they don't like music made for the money & that only sells because of image (like when a boy band does well because of their looks for example), that they only like music because of how it sounds. They say the only factor that influences their opinion is how the final thing sounds. Then they go out of their way to find music which they think is not made for the image or the money.

Surely this contradicts what they have already said?

Let me give an example:

Underground (& therefore 'underated') band A, let's call them.......um.........Mungo & the Sputniks, have been araound for a few years. They have made a couple of albums, released a couple of singles, & have a small fan base. They have not had any best sellers, but their fans claim this is because they are "in it just for the music, maaaaaaaaan".

Anyway, Mungo's fan base grows larger as word get around about how much they rawk. All the friends of the original fans go out & buy their album, the band becomes popular. They get a number one album & single. They have finally found success.

Then the original fan base stops listening to them because they have "sold out, maaaaaaaan. They stopped believing in the music, maaaaaaaaan".

This is not the case at all. The band hasn't changed, they are still playing their number one single just the same as they always have, the only difference is now more people like it.

The difference is that the original fans no longer feel unique. It used to be their band, & only their band. Instead of feeling proud & happy that their favourite band have become successful, they feel, in a way, jealous.

So they go off & find another underground band, so when they become semi-popular they can say "I liked them before they were cool" & when they become popular they can dump them & let the vicious cycle continue.

They claim they don't judge a artist/band by their image, when in fact this is what they actually ARE doing, without really realising it. They are just doing it in a different way from all the teenie boppers (or whatever you call them) who like Justin Timberlake.

I know some people who used to like Homestar Runner, but have gone off it because it has become "too commercial", when in reality it has just become popular.

This is why I don't talk about what music I like too often. I lisen to what I like, & hope that nothing influences my opinion except how it sounds. I am afraid that if I discuss it too much I will become like Mungo's fan base, and become influenced by everything except the music.

I never said the ONLY influence is how the music sounds (though really, it should be) - I agree that there are a host of reasons to like music, but it DOES piss me off when people feel they have to make good video clips to MAKE UP for their bad songs.

AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

Kinoko

I'm not sure, but I think his point could be this (because this is the way I often see it). I always get annoyed when I hear really bad music that gets popular, and I know it's the result of a popular artist just needing to get another song out and not actually caring about writing a genuinely good one or not. Just making it sell with cliched sounds and sex etc etc...

That's when I complain about artists making songs for money and their image - when the music is just bland but made to sell, instead of being made because they wanted to make this particular song.

I'd have to say that I think The Darkness is underrated in Australia ^_^ They're appeciated in Britain, as I understand, but honestly, hardly anyone really knows about them here. I always get responses like, "Eh?" when I mention liking them.

I think Queen are underrated too. Even though they're possibly one of the hugest rock bands in history - it's still not enough! They should be acknowledged as the best >_<

DGMacphee

One artist I've heard recently is Mark Farina. He's a DJ. I've never been a fan of dance music, but I heard one of Farina's songs (Dream Machine) recenlty and thought it was one of the most beatiful songs that touched my eardrums.

People know of him but haven't heard any of his stuff. Even my Dad, who is a bit of a dance afficionado, hasn't heard much about him.

So, yeah, I'd class him as underrated.

They get a lot of radio play nowadays, in brisbane, where you live. I think it's more a fact that people know the song, but not the artist.
I am Jean-Pierre.

Kinoko

Ahh, maybe so. I don't really listen to the radio anymore.

Actually, I should also mention Space. Space are a wonderful band that I think had one or two popular songs but never really got known as a band. I love almost every one of their songs and it seems like such a shame that they aren't better known.

Dart

The only band I can think of which is underrated is this alternative metal/emo band called 36 Crazyfists. To all punk fans, try downloading their song Slit Wrist Theory.

Fuzzpilz

I seem to not have posted in this thread before, so here are a few bands/artists I think are probably underrated: (some of them are popular in certain circles, but most people have never heard of them)

Bogdan Raczynski
Renaldo and the Loaf
Venetian Snares
Tim Hecker
The Braindead Monkeys
Peter Licht
Oxygenfad
Fidel and the Castronauts
Melt Banana.

TheDude

Mother Love Bone

They didn't get a chance to get any huge recognition because the lead singer died just after they finished their first album. 2 of the members went on to form Pearl Jam.

AGA

The BellRays. A Californian band, who play a kind of souly rock. Dunno how well known they are worldwide, but I'd never heard of them before, and they're definitely not well known in the UK...

LGM

Lemon Demon is the most underrated Musician ever. That kid needs a grammy
You. Me. Denny's.

Evil

Jesus, with all of the play he gets with his animations and the Potter Puppet Pals, I'm suprised he doesnt. Seriously, he's got it good, and even greater soon to come. Just remember your heritage and when you're famous, send us money.

I wouldn't say Type O Negative are underrated, every gothic metalhead i know loves them!

Adamski

Loop Theorist
The Good Natured Ocelot
Skeptopotamus
Juncmodule
Lemon Demon

LGM

Amen to that, DS

You're underrated aswell
You. Me. Denny's.

Fuzzpilz

Hehe, since we're all listing each other I'll add Loop Theorist, Skeptopotamus and Wrexsoul to my list as well.

juncmodule

DS, c. leks, and any other electronic musicians on these forums...

Where would I find your music?

-junc

Fuzzpilz

Leks' site isn't finished yet, but he has an entry in the tune competition that you can listen to. It is good.

DS will eventually finish an EP that will appear on aud.stim, I hope.

Some of my music is here, though for the most part it is old stuff that sucks. I'm currently working on this. There's also Bread Machine, a ten minute song project thing. Two of them are from leks, the others are mine.

Skeptopotamus is the name DS and I use for the music we've made together.

Ghormak, who is also awesome, does not have a reliable central repository for his music, to the best of my knowledge.
