the program says i need to put roomedit with agseditor

Yes, you need the roomedit, which is around here somewhere. Look for it. It may be covered in dust and thus hard to spot. While searching you could prepare for once you've found the roomedit by extracting the AGS distribution zip completely with folder structures into an empty directory.

Oh, and... turn right on the chandelier that points left.
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

well it says i need roomedit in the same folder with agsedit how do you do that because i can;t move it to a folder ???

Had you extracted the package yet?
You can't use it directly when it's still in a ZIP file. :P

Also, which version did you download? If you downloaded the beta, you're recommended to download the latest stable release instead, as the beta is meant to be for etsting only and the package missed some files that you need from older versions.

Why do people constantly try to run the program directly from the ZIP file? It makes no sense to me. Aren't there explicit instructions on the download page telling people to extract the ZIP before running the program? If not, there should be. Or just create an installer.

Hmm...

Because it is so much harder than starting a threat about it or reading the manual :)

Yes, but are you runnign the extracted version? I tried running from the zip and got the selfsame mesage you got. Maybe CJ should change the message to "RTFM n00b: extract this zip to a directory and run it from there instead of trying to run it from the zip, f00!"

Seriously, maybe he should put something in the message.

It's not just a matter of reading the manual. I always thought it was common sense. Files inside of a ZIP file don't exist on their own unless they're extracted. I've known that since I was like 12 and using PKZIP/PKUNZIP. :P

I'm not going to contridict or confirm anyone else's comments, but I suggest this:

1. Get an Idea of the game you're going to make.
2. Get a style for the art (sprites and backgrounds).

I've got the style nailed, myself.  As for a plot, I'm in the dark.  Once I have those those sections sorted, I'll worry about getting the software to work.

I'd also suggest playing as many adventure games as you can.  Not just the standard Sierra or Lucas Arts fare.

Anyhow, Good Luck and whatnot.
