Title: vista problems
Post by: werner on Tue 15/05/2007 14:57:29
Are any of you using vista? I get alot of Black Screens of Death. Will there be any patches for vista? I can see why so many are running both XP and vista.
Thanks

There will many many many patches for Vista.    I hate the number of windows hotfixes in my programs list.   Im not even sure what Vista has to offer beyond aesthetics.

To (possibly) clarify:
I moved this thread from Beginners Tech, but since werner went and posted there again, it's possibly about running AGS under Vista, and not just Vista in general. It'll maybe have to wait for werner to come back to clear that up. Someone else'll have to bounce it back to BTQ if needed.

Well if you meant running AGS in Vista, I've had no problems at all.  Works just as good as on my XP laptop. I don't use compatability mode either.  Just load it up.  When, exactly, does the crash happen?

Yes, running ags with vista! Ags isn't as stable in vista as with XP
Lots of black screens of death. Anyone else have this problem?

Oh, just uninstall vista, burn the disks and install XP and you'll be fine... Probably..

Vista is pointless - thats my opinion. Why exactly do you need it, just because it is new or it looks cooler?

I remember chatting with some Dell salespeople at their kiosk in the mall.

"So what's Vista have?  What kind of new features?"

"Well..   when you open a new box its kinda transparent!"

I installed a Vista theme on my computer and deleted it about 10 minutes later. I will just stick with XP until i have to buy a new computer that comes preinstalled with Vista.

I'm waiting until the first service pack for it. Right now it's a severely crippled resource hog.

As with XP, 's best not to be an early adpoter when it comes to an OS. I will wait until all the "OMG my computor is teh dyign." remarks caused by Vista to die down and possibly until the first SP is out. Of course, that depends on whether the SP comes soon or not. If soon, I'll wait for the second ;)

SP1 is coming out in the 3rd quarter of 2007... I can wait that long. Apparently it's updating the actual Windows kernel, to match the release of their Server edition of Vista. Apparently that's pretty major.

I wonder why they didn't just wait, and launch Vista with all the trappings SP1 is going to have?

It's not as if they were under pressure from competitors to get an early release.

Originally they were, what with Jaguar's supposed release around the time Vista was released. And releasing windows vista on time would snag a big part of the 'I'm going to get a new system, is it going to be XP-lame or OS X Jaguar?" crowd by making them go "Ooh! Vista is pretty!".

Of course, Jaguar has by now been delayed even more than Vista, but even without, Vista's selling 'okay' enough to warrant a market for it. And I do know, sad as it is, that I will switch over to it at some point.

Not on the mac, though. Screw OS X and windows, I'm going Xubuntu ;)

hasn't vista actually been released late? i seem to remember it was supposed to be released last year sometime.
or was it next year... something about them removing a load of planned security features to make the release date.

Oh, yes, it was delayed twice. And they still beat Jaguar ;)

40 million copies of Vista sold in a period spanning 100 days. That's sounding eerily good.
