Vista screws up indie developers?

Looking grim for indie/amateur game developers having Vista scaring less computer savvy people into not running/not finding/deleting their games.

That's just horrific. I mean, I had no plans whatsoever to get Vista but... wow.

I haven't felt so annoyed since that Trusted Computing malarky. It's a special kind of annoyance: I won't be directed faced by this issue but millions of non-computer savvy people will. And they will suffer.

In my opinion, Microsoft should give people what they need, not what they think people ought to want...

It's more the people who make games that will suffer IMO. Ironic that given their commendable efforts in helping the indie community with XNA, they've subsequently gone and totally stuffed them by making their games look like dodgy viruses to newbie PC gamers.

I was thinking that users would suffer in that they may not realise Vista is being paranoid. Oh, and all the save game difficulties mentioned in some other thread.

I don't know what kind of syndrome M$ has, apparently it's "Stop users from actually using their computer"-osis.

That's what grinds my gears. The operating system shouldn't be so obtrusive. If all this LUA, Game Explorer, write protection bollocks was optional for the paranoid, I'd feel a damn sight better about all this. There's better ways of doing this, anyway. Like, only flagging what looks like malicious software.

[Off topic somewhat]
On a side note, we once played with MSN's security. It wouldn't accept a copy of the uTorrent installation file, but DID accept a keylogger renamed to "happy elves.jpg".

While obviously they'll irritate some people... all programs get those warnings, even Microsoft releases. So it can hardly be an anti indie thing. I think they'd be fine if they would cause people to think about the trustworthiness of what they're installing, but people will get used to clicking through them and it'll be like they don't exist, unfortunately.

On the other hand, the games folder thing is a little bit annoying. If you read the tech forums, CJ already tried making AGS games work with the parental controls, but he hit the digital signature problem. While the majority of AGS game players wouldn't care about that, it's not a great gesture to the indie community.

If that's what it take to make people realise that a flashy design doesn't outweight a shovelful of bad points. Personally I don't plan to switch to Vista. When I'll buy a few games that require Vista to run, I'll simply ask someone to install me a boot menu so I can play those while keeping XP for my other activities.

Linux is... well, crap. So is Windows.

Linux isn't any better or worse than Windows, it's just different. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. It's like saying "Gee, this apple tastes good! Much better than that crappy banana!"

Ah yes, the crappy banana.

I have used both macs windows 95, 98,and Me. and dos, and I must say that I like windows 98 best, though a VERY small amount of the features from me would have been nice.
I find that Mac doesn't really let you get under the hood. sure its hard to screw up, but when it does, it feels as if the magic is over. plus the interface is too slick & jewely for me. (ditto for xp on the jewel part)
I like 98's ability to let you use dos if you want to, its versatility, and if I could I would add ME's open any file with any program "open with" function, plus the movie studio, and less bugginess on 98's part. That would be a nice operating system for me.

You know... You can turn off the themes and make XP look just like 98. Plus, DOSBox takes care of all your dos needs, surely.

If not, you could dual boot with FreeDOS if it were crucial to have it...
