Anyone know a good webhost? What hosts do people use?

All good games need a place to be, free from ads and really low bandwidth limits (okay i'm talking about geocities here).

I'm going to be buying a domain name soon and setting up a proper site, and the quandry of where my site is going to live has presented itself. What are peoples experiences with setting up a site? Are there any good hosts people could recommend?

Or maybe... there's someone out there that's wondering what to do with all the excess space and bandwidth that's just sitting there getting dusty, that could see fit to lend me a small space. I'm clean, and I don't eat much or have wild parties, you'd hardly know I was there.

But seriously, what are peoples experiences with this?

I know about

www.bluehost.com and I use www.hostfolio.com

The latter is ok, with great customer support, but does not offer that much.
The first seems to offer amazing things (750 GB monthly trasfer, 10 GB webspace and sooo many other things), which almost seems weird. But I know someone who uses them (that's how I found out) and they seem fine.

Both cost at around 80-100$ per year, which is not an amazing ammount really.

Plus there is the Americans Girls Scout, which can offer great things. Contact hajo or AGA if you want mroe details for that. :) I think that the price is 70 euros, but don't know really what they offer (but I think it is unlimited bandwith)!

I have used both 1and1 and Ipowerweb. Both are pretty decent and give good options I would check out there sites if your interested they are always changing. 1and1 allows a lot more My sql databases which is kind of nice and also has putty support.

Anyways if you wanted I have lots of bandwith I could always give you a subdomain off of my site provided you know how to use a FTP account to manage a website.

Candle, thanks for the info. I've checked out 1and1 and they look like the best. I can also get a domain name from there, which would be good, now all I have to do is think of a good .com address that isn't taken. I'm thinking i'll wait till i'm back in Australia to setup the website cos I'll be offline for about a month or so and it'd be a waste to set up now.

gargin, thanks heaps for the offer of a subdomain, but I think I want to get my own address. If you wanted to host my site though, i'd be interested =0). I use WS_FTP for uploading my website, which is okay, but there's probably better FTP programs out there.

Now I know I said I didn't want adds, but has anyone had any experience with putting adds on their site to pay for the hosting? Where can you sign up for advertising? What details do you need? How does it work?

I figure I could maybe do it till the hosting is paid for then take the adds off. I understand that I'd need to get the hits to get paid, but I keep getting emails from geocities saying i'm getting too much traffic on my site, which is why I want to move in the first place.
