Title: VoiP
Post by: rodekill on Fri 14/05/2004 03:17:28
Alright, I hooked myself up with this voice-over-ip phone thingy and I have to say, it is garbage.
Anyone have any experience with this? The sound quality is absolutely vile, and there's a delay in the voice. I am not impressed.

What do you mean.. Something like Skype? I didn't think Skype was all that bad, but there's really no actual use for it.

I guess it's just better sticking to the old phone.

If done correctly it works fine.. my University uses the internet to pipe phone calls and save long distance fees. They have multiple campuses, but only one IT office, so they have local numbers at the extention campuses that channel the phone calls to the main campus. They have quite a nice pipeline and a dedicated system, however.

Seems like your problem is low bandwidth, either on your end or theirs.

'VoIP' sounds like an onomatopoeia for someone getting zapped by a ray gun!

Woah, I thought I was the only one who used that word. Pesty, my new soul-mate.

I think Strong Bad used it once...

Y'know. My family have been thinking of switching to a service like this rather than normal phone. I'll warn them about it.

I've used Skype, and it's pretty good. Obviously the quality isn't as good as a real phone line, and it probably won't be for a long time, but you can still hold a perfectly good conversation using it... If you've had bad experiences using it, you've either used a crappy programme, crappy mic/soundcard or have a crappy connection...

Onomatapoeia! We used to have a teacher called Mr Pentlow, but we called him onomatapentlow.
