Damn straight! And you know what? Not that great superiority isn't enough, WE EVEN BROKE THE ALL TIME RECORD!!!!! So, I guess we just are the best, I'm all emotional here, Finns, continue this, and you jealous people. Feel free to envy us!
Yeah, CRYBABIES! Bohoo, Bloody PWNED! \o/
Finland's song rocked so hard, it damn near shook me to the floor!
GO FINLAND! ;D
I wish I was Finnish.
Or just all the metal dudes voted for Finland... You see, it was the only metal song there and people who liked metal hadn't much choice... whereas people who liked pop divided their votes between the rest.
Bosnia ruled.
Not heard the songs, I only watch the voting, to laugh with english accents that are worse than mine.
Congratulations. :)
Have fun with preparing it next year (evil grin) Ã, :P
We'll get the award for the oldest candidate, I think.
I am buying that DVD for that song alone. ;)
Nothing in the history of Eurovision has pwned so much!
Goooooooo Lordi!
Damn, it took us 40 years to win. Pretty cool.
You won rightly. There were a few good entries, but most of them were shit.
Ha. That was great :D
Yayness ¬¬
I heard it was possibe to vote ones own entry by calling through skype, and lots of people did that. That didn't work in the finals though. But as i couldn't vote for us, I voted for Norway and Ukraine, couldn't decide which was better!

There's a saying in Finland: "Hell will freeze over before Finland wins Eurovision". Well it's getting kinda chilly. Hell yeah!! Suck it all you sub-pars :D.
This is the most excited I've been in a long time. And I don't even like eurovisions, Lordi or metal :D. We rock!!11
Yeah, Lordi pwns. Saw them at Download fest a while back.
Though next year I reckon more and more people will enter rock music, seems that way. The UK should enter a punk group!
Obviously everyone votes for finland cos their entry stood out from all the crap.
That and the fact it F*****G ROCKED
Honestly, the thing I liked the most, was the performance played while voting, :)
but LORDI was fun to watch, too. Congratulations Finland!
My vote was to Finland, too. Because I like metal much more than pop. Congrats :)

Yeah, the intermediary performances were the best. Especially all the greek traditional music. It was so much better than any of the competitors.
Yeah, I agree, the intermediates were the best, but the Ukranian girl with the babydoll dress had the awesomest thighs ever!!! And the song was good too, I admit that.

Dude, it's the Eurovision song contest. Who cares?
Although still, I'm glad metal beat pop. (I didn't watch any of the program except when the metal band were on and I entered the living room and thought "GWAR? Slipknot? Mushroomhead? Who the heck are they?"
PS- I didn't really think it could be Slipknot or Mushroomhead. I'm just prodding at those funny looking type of bands yo.)
Slipknot? Never heard!!! Hmm, I guess your opinion is understandable, we can't all win, and I do feel sympathy on the countries that LOST, while we WON, ie were BETTER, as in, SCORED HIGHER POINTS, or as one might say, were MORE LIKED.
Hail from the land of the thousand lakes, where the true heart of Metal lives :)

actually approximately 187 888 lakes that is. Just think of it, you open a roadmap, and almost half of it is blue :D
If you must know Tuomas, earlier on my dad came in my room and said "You know that metal band that came on Eurovision and you said you hope they win, well guess what? They did!" and I laughed out loud.
Goodness knows what pitiful stench of an entry Britain had. I also suspect that "Lordi" are not the best that Finland has to offer either!
This is hilarious and great.

Well let's face it, Lordi is oldschool metal, the singer former head of finnish Kiss-army, and this is now publicly accepted enough to compete in the first place and therefor win since nothing could be compared with it. My mom protested vividly and so did my grandmother (which stem from the northen forests of Finland). I and my little sister along with her friend were in total agreement - Finland should win. They have had enough of sad tangos and melancholy, the only musical prejudice left to be presented to Europe was metal. But did Lordi win by music or show? Metal fans across Europe may have found this their cup of tea, but I doubt it. Musicwise, Lordi aint much
hard rock, not in my ears anyway. Having experience with monster makeup, I highly appreciate their effort in masking so my vote were for the show rather than their musical efforts.

Pretty much yes.
Who said anything about their music?
LJUBI
im glad a half-decent band won for a change but i have no respect for them because theyre a metal band at the bloody EUROVISION ARSING SONG CONTEST, the worst of all things musical related.
What they need is a kind of special Eurovision for the best GOOD alternative music thatd kick ass and keep all the old people from spending their pensions on the tickets.

You mean one that no-one wold watch? That sounds like it would be a commercial success!
I don't give a crap about the eurovision but I'm really happy a metal band won over all the crappy sugar pop of the eurovision. now they should think about this competition style again.
They have shows of a lot of alternative, or non alternative music, at music festivals. Ã, Eurovision would be a lot less fun if it was about musicianship... and voting on that would be a lot less fun. Ã, Art probably shouldn't be a competition, but silly stage shows with cut out cactii and monster costumes, and awful but enthusiastically delivered pop songs? These are things everyone can understand and vote on just fine, and for most people it seems highly amusing.
Lordi isn't a triumph of metal or anything, but it was nice to see something that wasn't the same as everything else winning... the novelty entries are what make or break eurovision.
QuoteMetal fans across Europe may have found this their cup of tea,
haha no no not at all. Posers. But as Gore said in a private conversation, compared to the rest of the competing songs, Lordi were FUCKING METAL so that's kind of funny.
I didn't watch by the way.
Finland has been taking part in the Eurovision song contest for 40 years and has been pretty much the last one every time. This yeard Lordi were asked if they would like to put themselves up for a candidate. I think their actual agreement came as a surprise for many. (Here's an actual interview with Mr. Lordi himself, where he explains how it all happened. (http://www.eurovision.tv/english/2510.htm)) Many people probably voted for Lordi just as a joke, the idea of sending a bunch of monsters to represent Finland in Athens was just so tempting. Of course, there are hell lot of actual Lordi fans who voted for Lordi because they thought it was the best candidate in their opinion.
And then Lordi and went and won the whole thing, making Eurovision history.
I agree that not everyone who voted for them necessarily liked their music, but because the contest is so full of crap they probably thought something completely different from the usual should win.
Personally, I like Lordi's music, but part of the enjoyment comes from the whole monster thing. I couldn't imagine Lordi performing without their costumes, it just doesn't feel right. If you like horror movies, by the way, you might want to check some music videos by Lordi. Great stuff.
I don't usually watch Eurovision, because, like I said, it's usually full of crap. However, I sat through the whole thing last night only to see Finland's success. I must say that the few highlights of the night were the British announcer showing horns while giving Finland 12 points (I lolled), and Mr. OX's signs he showed to camera everytime Finland scored 12 points. ("mitäs tilasitte?" Haha, genius!)
On the other hand, calling the winning band "shit" or "gay" on their own forum after their winning is the lowest of low. It's a shame that not everyone can take losing.
Another thing I noticed was that hell lot of songs seemed like they were inspired by Ruslana's winning song from some years back. Does this mean that next year the contest is full of rock/hard rock/metal songs? Who knows, it should be interesting to see what happens.
Me too because everyone else...
I personally haven't liked Lordi's music in the past, and I still don't. The older stuff is just... not my cup of tea. However, the ESC entry song is rather good in my opinion. Although it indeed is not musically that special it just strikes me as a good song.
Quote from: Petteri on Sun 21/05/2006 10:07:29

I said on another forum earlier today that next year the competition will be full of wannabe rock and metal bands, so we'll need to top them inside the genre. Something like Deathchain (http://www.deathchain.com) ought to do it. :=
Yay Finland won!
I voted for Finland!
But it's a shame Estonia didn't got to the final this year :'((I'm from Estonia thats why I am so sad)
BTW When I saw Croatia's song i lol-ed for 5 minutes
It's funny, I don't really care too much about eurovision, but it was about 1 of 3 acts I saw, and I pissed my self laughing thinking, as if they will win with all those blonde bimbos against them, but they did win.
Quite funny, It was more enjoyable and memorable, than the others I saw, well done to them
My opinion of Europe as a whole was raised significantly last night. The UK entry was awful though: cockneys dressed as schoolgirls. Ugh...
Also the line: "The teachers ask you, 'what did you learn in school today?'". Makes no sense. The teachers were probably there. Teaching.
It's been the most visible evidence of how shabby and decadent Europe is. Disguise some clows as orcs, make a wannabe hard rock song, and all the sheeps will hypocrytally vote you with the thought "If I vote this, people will think that I am cool and transgressive".
Ashaming. I'd like to be Aussie.
I found a video clip.

(heh. reminds me of my first game)
Reminds me of my first date... j/k of course, I never had one.
Anyway. I've never given Lordi much attention. They had this hit one year, Would you love a monsterman... A Kiss -redo, I'd say. Still, I'm currently watching the rerun of the show, and I can't help feeling proud of being a Finn. I don't think the meaning of the contest has ever been about music, rather than to raise the nationalist feeling, nd right now, I feel really Finnish.
What makes me laugh though, is that I can easily say that at least 75% liked Lordi in Finland, yet all the peoploe that took it to a public level were so angry and embarrassed. I recall this woman saying in a newspaper, that it has always been a shame to lose, but this is much more humiliating. Such a silly act could never even reach the finals. Though she was so wrong. Until now all the contestants have been ones that try to sound good for old ladies, well, we had one, and that was second. He would never have won. Then I think lots of people voted for Lordi because they were fun, they had balls, they were kickin the ESC in the face, and they liked the music.
I'd say the reason we have lost is because the ones who vote are those old ladies that don't know better. This one said even that we should have sent some old singer that had been say 10th or so, which was the best we had, that would be less humiliating. It's not supposed to be a big deal if we lose, it's just a silly contest, but bloody hell it feels good to win.
Yet, even though Lordi have those dresses, I take them as music, not some fools that just play some act, and I believe most of the voters did too. And Frlander, I don't think anyone believed it'd make them cool if they voted. voting in ESC is generally considered lame...
In the interest of preserving the honor of METAL, here is some awesome actual heavy metal (some would say some of the best ever recorded and I would not disagree for one) for those that for some reason considered Lordi to be in any way indicative of the strengths of this type of music.
Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian - 02 Valley of the Dolls (http://www.locustleaves.com/02%20Valley%20of%20the%20Dolls.wma)
Lyrics below are topical for those willing to get the symbolism.
QuoteValley of the Dolls
Bedroom mirrors do tell who's the fairest of them all
Lime light silhouette, transparent walls
Dancing shadows cascade paper dolls
Wailing ghost guitars send in the clowns
Send in the clowns
Painted plastic faces stealing mommies make up
Masque the false gods with mannequin smiles
Prima donnas play upon their pedestals of fame
Unborn girls, the false facade, illegitimate child
I won't play your game
Illegitimate child
Searching for a name
Blasphemous black Bible bias you betray bigotry
Slay the hydra pretty fair maidens spread their leprosy
Hungry children feed from hype of perpetual ego's
I slay the hydra, burn the talisman, holocaust
Run with the pack, illegitimate child
The unborn wench at war
Tears in his eyes, she became a bride
Wedlock to a whore.
Shatter the dream, the tangerine dream
Bow to kings, not the queens
Go back where you reign, to your domain
The Valley of the Dolls!
Bow to Kings of yesterday
They have given you wings to fly away
What have the phantom queens but deceived you
Armies of shadows climbing
Silvery mountains, lining molten and ask
Camouflage the battle scars with Oxy10 and Maybelline
Cloning the heros in hype magazine
Pirates of underground, lightning the speed of sound
You will prevail
And bedroom mirrors do tell who's the fairest of them all
Lime light silhouette, transparent walls
Dancing shadows cascade paper dolls
Wailing ghost guitars
Run with the pack, illegitimate child
The unborn wench at war
Tears in his eyes, she became a bride
Wedlock to a whore
Shatter the dream, the tangerine dream
Bow to Kings, not the Queens
Go back where you reign, to your domain
The Valley of the Dolls
I don't quite get your point Helm. Surely no one ever said there is no music better than Lordi, and the song you posted here is completely different. Btw, it's not better than Lordi imo. And I'd hardly count this as Heavy Metal, rather hard rock of some kind, and face it, the ESC has nothing to do with what's that, Fates Warning, nor does Lordi, this is my opinion.
That's Ã, what I wanted to express (Edit: In reference to HELM's post)... IMO it was not a victory of metal, because it does not sound like metal like me.
I even thought that Lordi was a "normal" group faking metal. Petteri is informing me via msn that they are real metal musicians...
So, I must change my post. They are not clows... They are real metal musicians probably laughing about all this shabby contest. I've been told the song it's in a real metal CD, but I am sure that they have thought "Ok... We like metal, but let's pick a song of the disc that is just 75% metal, because this people of the contest is really posh" They would have probably scared the voters with real metal...
My real complain is about the VOTERS. IMO they voted thinking "Voting for a metal song will make me look like original and cool..." But IMO it was not real metal and Lordi went there just for having some laughs, in a very metal attitude...
So, I repeat, my shame is not produced by the winners. My real shame is made by those who are supposed to be the "cultural lighthouse of the world", who, wanting to, haven't been able to defeat a group who didn't want to win.
Shame? The Eurovision Song Contest is a shame to good taste every year.
This was the people saying "The ESC sucks" in unison.
It was a very good humoured and camp way of saying that, but I agree.
In essense there were only two songs in the contest, Lordi's and everybody elses. Every other entry was identical. As far as music goes I don't think Lordi are much better than the rest of the blondepop.
The evident embarrasment of the hosts was evidence that Lordi, though they may not be greatly transgressive, were just different enough.

I don't quite get your point Helm.
Two points: for those that listened to Lordi thinking they were listening to indicative heavy music, a counter-example.
Second point, lyrical, to the whole eurovision thing: Go back where you reign, to your domain. The valley of the dolls.
Check, got it now
I'm glad Lordi won. Maybe next year the eurovision won't be so crappy as it's been for the past hundred years (give or take a few hundred).

I know the whole genre-thing sucks balls, but if I had to classify Lordi, I wouldn't call them a heavy metal band. After all, even the band itself doesn't classify themselves as a heavy metal band.
This was fun and unexpected... I dislike Eurovision, but I was interested this time only because I heard Lordi was taking part. I didn't expect them to win, but I was on their side as they were the first country to ever put a hard rock song in Eurovision. I know some people (that also dislike the contest) who voted for the first time in their life. I even thought I should vote too, until I remembered I still have some dignity left :P
The song was okay and kinda enjoyable, but taking the heaviness away and the harsh vocals it's not that far from an ordinary Eurovision song. Sure, it's still quite different, but it's the usual verse-chorus thing. I do hope that this will encourage the future participants to be more innovative and experiment with music instead of just using unoriginal techniques to win. Maybe in the future a true metal song will compete.
By the way, did anyone watch the opening ceremony? I thought that the song in the ceremony was much better than any of the songs I listened to in the competition. And I wonder, why didn't Greece use this song as an entry? The answer is simple, I guess, but it irritates me because Eurovision could have the power to glorify music. Instead, it's usually raping true art, with the participants trying to create a catchy winnable song instead of creating something more "intellectual".

The Lordi guy in interviews goes on about how he'd like to see more hard rock and heavy metal music in eurovision, like they're comparable things. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are very different things. It doesn't take just a distortion pedal to be metal. So yeah, I wouldn't like to see Heavy Metal in eurovision. Why would that be good?
Shove your genres up your arses. It's all heavy music. Some more, some less.
There's too much genre for my ass. Also: no.
He didn't compare the two. If someone would say, "I'd like to see more heavy metal and indie rock in ESC", it doesn't mean he's comparing them. The Lordi dude is just saying that he would like more genres to be included in the incredibly homogeneous ESC, and he mentions those two probably because those are the two genres he likes or is involved with the most. The genres are quite irrelevent.
Don't you think it would be better if people included more niche genres to ESC and if the competition was actually all about the music? Not to say I care about the competition, but bringing in diversity is irrefutably a good thing and it would inherently make the competition more credible.
hahaha, right on! Congrats to Lordi and the Fins for finally winning one..
I laughed my arse off when i found that Lordi made it to the finals and Holland didn't.
Then i laughed even harder when i flicked through the channels and saw them performing their song after winning.
About five seconds after that i almost died as i envisioned orthodox chrisitians around Europe trembling in fear and expecting the apocalypse when they saw these servants of satan winning such a prestigious (WHAHAHA) contest.
But in all honesty, i wasn't really that impressed with the song itself. It reminded me of late 70's early 80's Dio and Black Sabbath music. With costumes like that i had expected some gruesome death metal band who's music even i couldn't stomach.
Still, a nice turn of events when finally a non-conformist act goes home with all the glory.

For once, a eurovision song worth buying. Thats a great start. Well done Finland!
I hope next year more metal acts will arise in the eurovision.
Once again, us UK dwellers pick a shit song by some 40 year old rapper. How desperate!
I don't know why the UK bothers to enter the eurovision coz we haven't enough allies or neighbouring countries to rely on. If only we could enter as England rather than United Kingdom.
Correct me if I'm wrong but no one in this thread seems to have mentioned LITHUANIA yet.

That was one of my favourites :) And the bald guy reminds me of a former president of Finland (image (http://ukk.evvk.com/ukk-wallpaper.jpg)). They should've won ::)
Kekkonen set aside, I hated the Lithuanian entry. It was funny as a novelty act for some 10 seconds, after which it was totally boring, awkward and stupid.
To "finnish" ( ;D) with this. Eurovision sucks. I would never trust in this contest again, since Greek's Sakapó did not win.
And Andorra sucks. I bet we were going to get less than 10 points, and with his "12", Spain reached 18. I am thinking in sending Squinky's female-bright-stickered-helmet clones to kill them all.
Frankly, in my opinion this years ESC had more quality songs than usually. I actually enjoyed watching it, and I did find something good in each song. I was really surprised, though I've never followed it so closely as this time, probably because of Lordi entering.

Mr. Lordi himself takes influences from bands such as Kiss and Alice Cooper... did I already say this... Well, that's the reason. It's all intentional. And I think the costume thing was a good idea. You know, the band has been up for at least 14 years now, they made their first record in 02.

Anyway, it was a several hour's consert with us the only band of the 20 that did not play Heavy Metal, we actually played jazz and a bit swing... "But how that crap can be the representation of the european music ??? ??? ??? Is this the better we can get ??? ??? ???"
Well, no, that's definately not the best we can get. Like I said, nobody is trying to make a good song. Everyone is trying to make a simple, catchy tune thingy along with an impressive show and/or fancy costumes, because that's what most people like and it's what has more chances of winning.
And like I said, the song during the opening ceremony was much better than any of the songs of the competition. It wasn't repetitive, it was dramatic and progressive. I didn't hear it carefully though, because I wasn't paying attention except the final 30 seconds or something. But my point is, people can write so much better music than the Eurovision songs, they're just more interested in victory than in writing a good song.
Yay, we're the best. ;) Did we win by skill, or was everyone just bored of that crap with women with not much clothes on? And that pop...
Well, I've seen many people who believe so. Guess they're correct.
I've read that Lordi has allways acted disguised... Leaving apart that those does not sound a lot like "heavy metal" attitude, but as a marketing tactic, a magazine has published images of the singer without the mask...
The fans have called to boycott the magazine...
And now, to annoy the members who are fans of the group, I'll post the image here:

;D
Just kidding... If people gets annoyed by this, they are just dumb... Read what I said about the Mohammed cartoons and apply it to this...Ã, :)
P.S. I think he's as ugliest without mask as he is with...
I don't think that's an ugly person at all.
No he's not! I would gladly go to bed with him!
btw, I don't consider the eurovision song from Lordi metal. Just that. I loved the fact that they won. And that the Greek entry was just a collage of stolen songs and the singer was an old lady that should sit home and stop pretending to be 20!
/Rant off

Wait a minute! You don't mean she's so old she could have taken part in the 70s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Vissi#Late_1970s), do you??Ã, Ã, :o

Amen! My mom almost worships her... It's funny, but sad.
I think the eurovision song contest is a joke and Lordi wasn't very good. But then again, nobody was. It's nice to see a metal band win though instead of some boring pop artist.
We had this celebration day on friday. It was broadcast nationally. Over 80 000 people came over to celebrate the victory and hear Lordi play, me and my friends included. We dorve 200 kn to see him and then back, then in the morning I had a meeting from 8 am to 16 pm. I was kind of tired.
The President gave Lordi a bronze keyflag to honour his work and the victory. He then played through all his hits. A Guinness world record try was made, with over 80 000 people singing Hard Rock Hallelujah -karaoke. Latest record had been 50 000. 80 000 is more than any public or any at all happening/commotion in Finland had gathered. There were people of all ages. I can't really describe the feeling of proud that was in the air. I think, even more people were watching the show from tv.
We were pretty close to the stage and being a short boy, I could barely manage to see something from behind the tall helsinkians. We also took a few pictures, bloody hell, my friend has a camera but I had to tell him to take a picture all the time because he doesn't quite use it. He just has it in his hand. THen when he gets and idea, he takes one picture that'll end up very shaken and blurry. THis is me with my friend, taken by the other, forced to do that by me. My friend just bought a new camouflage army suit, God knows why, but hence the cap. http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3919/dsc002992xq.jpg
But now I have to go... politics, you know...
We saw the Eurovision in Brighton. The only places where they show such a programme instead of some bottom-division football game are the most gayest of gaypubs. - Namely Bulldog. Don't go to Bulldog unless you're above 35, tattooed, bald and queerer than a whole Freddie Mercury fanclub.
Which is kind of funny; I lost my mobile phone during that night. The day after, I went to the policestation to report it stolen. When the officer asked me where it had happened, I replied: "Down at Bulldog, watching the Eurovision."
His boss, who was standing behind him, commented sardonically: "It takes a lot of courage to say that, son."

I was also there with my student friend (from Helsinki University of Technology). The show was unforgettable cause Lordi had really deserved the win of eurovision! 8)
We wasn't very close to the stage, but I had binoculars with me, and it gave me great help to see Lordi's show.
HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH!
