I'm currently paying for an account elsewhere.  When time comes to make my tri-yearly payment, though, I'll give it a look.  It sounds pretty cool.

Why bother spend the money? I've got a 120 gig server sitting in my friends basement and it didnt cost us a cent. We have our OWN server, costs us nothing to keep online besides our internet connection (broadband), and we can set all aspects of it. We can sell space for what we want to. We're making money by not spending it. My buddy has written a tutorial on how to set up your own server. Anybody interested in it, pm me.

What the hell, the bidding already ended. Find us another, Joey!!! :)

Femme Stab Mode >:D

I think it might be a scam, or there is a catch. it sounds too good to be true.

Actually, it sounds like they're doing exactly what Evil's friend is doing.
Once I killed a man. His name was Mario, I think. His brother Luigi was upset at first, but adamant to continue on the adventure that they started together.

In other words, Evil's friend is involved in a scam.

Just connecting those thoughts. :)

Selling webspace through your DSL line isn't a scam, it's smart thinking. It is illegal though, since most contracts ban using the connection for hosting. There's no way for them to figure it out though.

No, it's not a scam. Why is everybody always paranoid and mistrusting about deals? It's not necessarily true that if something seems too good to be true it usually is. There IS such a thing as a free lunch. And free utensils, too.

With the Average persons Broadband and with them using it at the same time that would be pretty slow if the website was visited. I dunno what broadband you got, but I know it would be on mine

LGM

Don't listen to evil.. That server's crap. It's slow, and has 0 content, filled with spammers on the forum, and 2 idiots are running it :)
You. Me. Denny's.

AGA

Plus running a server over broadband is plain silly, the moment you get a few people downloading files, yours and their connection will slow to a crawl.

Oh, and the OC3 connection mentioned in the hosting isn't very good either, considering most proper webhost have OC-192 connections...

Gregjazz

I was being sarcastic, by the way. Must I explain everything? :)

Hinders

sounds too good to be true, only the domain name costs more than that  :o
Heh, i have a server too, running with 512k adsl, linux slackware, but since i have 512k it is slow as hell, so i rather use the account RE gave me;)
----

Evil

Actually, the only reason you would need a personal server to download massive things would be for warez, which is illegal anyway. The only thing illegal we are doing is running a server. Thats it. All legal softwear. And how often do companies do port scans of an entire area? Never.

The speed of the connection is pretty good. We need to downgrade to DSL though. Not only do we (he) save $5 a month, but it also quad-drupples our speed. If we're connected to the internet anyway and have a bunch of spare computers, why not set up a server?

Hinders

well, your isp could portscan you, happened to my friend, and they closed his ports, he had to pay lots of money to get them to open them again
----

Evil

Heh, my ISP would be a fool to do a port-scan. They coverage area is huge! By then, we would be aware of the port scan and turn of the system. We are aware that this is a semi-probable issue and have back-ups, code-names, and all of that jazz. Its all in the pdf we've written, "So, You Want Your Own Server." ;)

TerranRich

Just so you guys know, I partook in one of these auctions.

My domain, www.terran-x.com should be active in a day or so. I can access it currently with FTP, and let me tell you, it is FAST! What more could I want? It supposrts subdomains, etc., etc., it's all good.
