dad- one really reallu loud disgusting tie
Mom-brazilian music
A deep pink rose and a card each, is all I can do for my mother and sister this year
The being known as my sister is getting Pirates of the Carribean on DVD. However, because I enjoy being sadistic about her Christmas presents, she has to follow a treasure map to find it.
My parents are getting a coupon to have their old vinyl albums burned onto these babies. (http://www.verbatim.com/products/products.cfm?pro_id=379) Please note that they are not actually babies. They are CD's.
WanderLady: Roses are ALWAYS good presents.
I'm not getting anyone anything... because I'm one cheap bastard.
...j/k. I'm collecting unemployment, so I can't really afford to get anything special. Everyone except for my girlfriend is getting a card (sans money).
I really suck at finding presents for people. My dad is getting a gift certificate for a record store (also sells movies), the last time I got him a DVD he didn't touch it for 2 years. I am getting my mom these porcelain dolls called Dreamsicles, and my sister wants a reggae CD (blech). While in New York, I got my friend Todd some firefighter-related memorabilia, since he's a firefigter and all, and I forgot about his girlfriend. As for my girlfriend...since she doesn't exist I decided against getting her anything. :P
I got these two tea cups and $40 or so worth of strange teas for this girl I like. She likes to drink tea. I'm wrapping it up into a gift basket. There's also this little book of quotes from women, because she likes quotes. I was going to get her a novel because she likes to read, but I didn't know which one.
I got my parents Uru. Mwuahaha. It's actually for me. They like adventure games though. I bought Syberia a while ago, and they both played it through and I only played about half of it. Uru won't run on my dad's computer though. Unless he turns the graphics way down. This is the first year I actually bought my parents anything using my own money. Most years I didn't get them anything, or they gave me money and told me exactly what to get.
I didn't get my sister anything... I might. I don't know.
I didn't get my other friends anything. Ehh... I'm a horrible person. Haha.
I already got my present. My main one. A Canon PowerShot A80 digital camera. I love it.
Tea is good :D
Well, my sis - FLCL vol.1 DVD.
Dad- A book.
Mum - chocolate :D
Christmas? What's that?
;D
My brother: Unbreakable DVD and a cd by Finnish rock star :P
My dad: Flashlight (so he doesn't need to borrow my flashlight anymore) and a bottle of deodorant
My mum: Tablecloth and a soap
My best friends: I made a game for them.
My fellow AGSers: Well, you see then... ;)
Since I have have no money, I've been pirating and burning CDs for people.
I have to say, christmas shopping is like the most stressful experience there is. I mean, I don't mind moving house or any of that, but put my in a shopping centre and tell me to get stuff for christmas, and I'm reduced to a quivering wreck.
Of course, what I meant to say was that I don't believe in the commercial side of christmas - it should just be about meeting friends and family and getting drunk.
I can be forgiven for not buying exceptional presents for everyone this year because my bank account is still recovering.
Of course, that didn't stop me from spending MUCH more than I intended.
For my Sister, who watches too much cable TV,
The 'Adams family values' DVD.
For James, who often has the film version on,
'Nightmare before Christmas', the book by Tim Burton.
For Chris, a fan of Johnny Vegas and co.,
A 'Monkey' stuffed toy, to stick on his window.
For my parents, I trued to find gifts, but to no avail,
But I have a candle and Monthy Python scripts, if all else fails.
I am currently desitute, and can't really aford to buy heating oil and food, so no christmas for me.
C.
I want to buy something funny :P
But I don't know what....any ideas? ::)
I currently do not have a cent in my name. I just began to teach my sisters how to play the piano. I don't get paid until the end of the month. Two sessions each week for each sister all month long. $40 a month.
I do support Buy Nothing Day ( http://adbusters.org or http://www.buynothingday.co.uk/ ). I also support Buy Nothing Christmas ( http://www.buynothingchristmas.org/ ). Seriously, Christmas is getting more and more materialistic. Unfortunately, two people from school got me presents (soap and a calligraphy set). So, I ended up giving them listening CDs (The King of Torts) and a book (Dracula). The book I had bought to read for myself later on and the CDs were won by my dear mother (so I really didn't spend any more money). I really wish they would have returned their presents and given the money to someone else. I tried to get them to, but they would not. I guess I'll have to go sell them and give the money to the orphanage myself.
Buy Nothing Day sounds like a great idea. I hope people pick up on it.
Christmas is better on the receiving end.
Ha ha, thats a good one...
Like I should be the one thats giving the presents...
I thought it said in the Bible: 'If you give something, you'll get it back 10x times'
well i give people pain... And they give me.. hmm... more pain?
QuoteChristmas is better on the receiving end.
You said it.
;)
I just found out I'm getting paid early and extra so I'll be blowing about $500 more dollars on friends & family. I couldn't care less if I get anything for Christmas but I dig giving presents, particularly ones that I've had some personal input in. As for my gay lover? He's not getting sh*t. Refuses to give a reach-around, the bastard.
Work gave me my Christmas present: A card with a note that a donation was made in my name to some charity or other, (http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.geocities.com/mikerrh/yodacard.jpg) and a Creative Nomad Muvo Mp3-player/USB-drive with company logo printed on it by Creative. (http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.geocities.com/mikerrh/lfgift.jpg)
Me and my gay lover (or "Rob" as I sometimes call him) got stuck in a generosity competition this year. I ended up getting him a load of kitcheny stuff in chrome, a pair of cuff-links, the new kylie album and a large cuddly gorilla. This just about left me around £40 more generous than him, so I won. "HA HA HA IN YOUR FACE LOSER BOY!" I didn't say.
I got my mum "Death and the Penguine" and my dad some comic book.
My brother and sister are getting virtual reality games. Sam's getting the ninja one, and Emma's getting the driving one.
Everyones getting movie vouchers from me, everyone likes movies, and it saves much time thinking & shopping. One day I'll get more adventurous but I can't stand shopping on a normal day, so shopping at christmas can just get flossed.
I hope people are more thoughtful for me, I'd love heaps of movie vouchers.
Well, I bought my mum an electric mixer she wanted instead of chocolate. After shaking and sniffing the boxes under the tree I now know that I am getting a DVD, a CD, and a box of chocolates.
I actually didn't get anyone presents this Christmas. I share the same view with AlexisVale. I don't think buying presents is right when you're basically forced to do it. Therefore I'll save my money (the little I've got) and instead be more generous in everyday life to those that matter to me and try to enjoy the day with my family. Even though I might prefer if my friends were around. :) Anyway, I can help people out with real issues rather than just give them some objects. Especially when the object would be something that I might not think they really need, just something to prevent them from being disappointed. It just doesn't seem right to me. It's a funny thing how my family doesn't get my viewpoint but my friends do.
Anyway, as sidenotes, I enjoyed your essay on the subject AlexisVale. And additionally, CJ is once again right. It's like Christmas every day when Chris Jones is around. Honestly. Rock on.
I see Christmas as a trading period. You give someone something, they give you something back.
I am giving my family the gift of giving this holiday, they get to experience 'giving' towards me, It's a real money saver eh.
Christmas is seriously the worst and best holiday in the world, right after Valentine's Day. I hate that day. Reminds me how lonely I am. My gay lover left me so I guess I'm not getting anything from him this year. *sniffle* As to everyone else, CHRISTMAS? Bah Humbug! Yes, humbug I say! All my relatives get together and get drunk and I hate it. Last year, and I am being compleatly serious (no....I really am...) my mom and aunt got so wasted that they argued for an hour about why Jesus was gay and Amelia Airheart was actually a man. And the worst part is I just have to sit there through the whole thing. Christmas! Ha! *storms off to his room to count his pennies and slams the door behind him*
QuoteAfter shaking and sniffing the boxes under the tree...
Lmao ;D
People joke about it, but I REALLY DO get wops loads of satisfaction from giving someone a well thought out present which I know will surprise and enhappy them.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with giving presents when you really want to. But the fact is, at Christmas most people buy presents just because they have to. Many wouldn't buy gifts if they didn't know they're going to get something back. And that's not a gift. As RobertEric said, it's trading.
I wouldn't say it's trading... it's more of an ritual.
Gifts really are the center of this holiday when you are little, but later everything becomes more of an symbolic thing- and so do presents.
I don't really care about gifts (or religious undertone), but i kinda like the spirit around this time... that is, until i enter shopping center ;)
Fuck all! I am this years designated grinch... mwoohahahaa
I like being generous and getting people presents when I know they're going to love them...I don't really feel forced into buying things and it's just once a year. I'm no Christmas-hater. No point being tight about presents, as you get stuff back. It's like a trade as RobertEric says.
Obviously you've never forked out 350 big ones to buy your bro an amp and in return received a years supply of bath suds >:(
Yeah, I agree with Igor in a way, It's totally different at different agaes.
When you don't have much money, it's silly to fork out money you can't afford. If it was up to me, that no presents thingy would be sweet, but it does go far beyond the commercial side, it's just unfortunate.
The best solution would be to agree to not buy presents for christmas and then go sick at the sales the day after or during January, you'd be sure to spend at least half as much and get the same quality shit. How dumb are we all.
I think Christmas has gotten far too commercial ... but, as it's an American spawned tradition, what do you expect? For me it's more about the (as Igor said) spirit of the season. Sure most have forgotten what Christmas is about but since it's not really Christ's b-day ... well ... I guess it's okay :)
Mom: A gold anklet and an Egyptian Throw for her new couches.
Dad: Caller ID Globe (http://shopping.discovery.com/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10000&storeId=10000&langId=-1&productId=53871&categoryId=25813&partnumber=690628cp=Electronic-04-DiscoveryDigitalCall) and a window thermometer.
Brother: A game controller for the PC, the Atari Joystick with 10 games, and a DVD (Critters)
Girlfriend: A DVD player, a crap load of DVDs, socks, shower/body lotions (cucumber melon), a Swedish Chef doll, The Hitchhiker's Guide Bible (all 6 books in one), sleeping clothes, and some stuff I won't tell you about.
I always go overboard but I love giving gifts to people.
I really, honestly, don't care if I get nothing in return ... giving makes me happy! Tis the season!
Merry Christmas!!
