Title: What DO you think is wrong?
Post by: WanderLady on Sat 22/01/2005 05:42:00
I don't intend this thread to be one of argument. If it is to be locked then so be it.

Everyone here expresses great openness to all things that go on in the world. 'Live and let live,' or what not. If that is the case, I wonder if anything is wrong to anyone.

So with this thought in mind, is there anything that you believe/find/know/accept/... to be wrong?

Well, I spent a long time thinking about it, and I've come to the conclusion that I believe sin is wrong... sorry, just joking around.

There are certain morals I have and values of what is right/wrong, but I know many people here would think otherwise, so posting them would be pretty pointless.

So, how can we go about this thread without starting an argu--er--heated discussion? Hopefully this will be a first. :)

There are lots and lots of things that would be considered wrong by a "live and let live" type person, anyone that infringes on someone else breaks that ideal... it's really not worth listing them. Ã, Murder though, that one will do. Ã, Thread over, no arguments, yay.

Disguising your polemics as rhetorical questions.

That's wrong.

Live and let live? That sums up the beliefs of some of us.  However, most don't apply it to animals (with vegetarian/vegan exceptions of course).  I, for one, have more of a philosophy of I don't screw with you, don't screw with me.  I hold strong opinions about what I find to be acceptable and/or annoying.

One of my recent determinations is that it's wrong to bring up controversial issues, politics, or religion unless you're willing to intelligently defend yourself.  It's fine if someone wants to share their faith (or lack thereof) with me but they'd better be ready to be able to defend their views, or at least tolerate giving mine a listen.  After the recent homosexual debate, my ex actually came across just that issue.  She tried to reason with the guy but he was only willing to put his views forward, and unwilling to contemplate anything different.

I think that one double standard that liberally-minded people often have is that they assume that open-mindedness is the best way to go and don't consider listening to a point of view that might be a little more (or a lot more) conservative than they're own.

You see what you've done? You've made this question so damned general that I end up rambling.

People forcing their opinions on other people, that's wrong.

And you should think so too!

Basing all of your opinions and beliefs on the world and of fellow man, on the teachings of some invisible deity.

I believe that prejudice is wrong.
Judging somebody because of their skin colour, religion, music taste or even the way they dress is a sign of ignorance. If people try to understand one another before making judgements, this world would be a far better place.
I myself have been a target of prejudice many times, since I'm a goth and an agnostic. To some people there's something very wrong with you if you do not follow the same lifestyle or religion as they do.

Just my comments....

Yeah, same. I used to get shit from other kids my age because I'm atheist. Well, agnostic.

Well I think predujice is wrong.
For a start, I'm an atheist in a Catholic school. In Ireland. To make matters worse, I get stick because (when the faecal matter hits the rotary cooling device) I'm more Unionist than Nationalist. (Put simply, I'd rather be British than irish).

Also, I hate the things everyone hates (racism, segregation, sectarianism) but also hate religion. I know it comforts a lot of people, and is very meaningfull to some, so I won't knock it, but as far as Christianity goes....there are just too many descrepancies. Such as the epilogue of Revelations, where Jesus stops speaking in olde speake, and speaks in modern English, telling us that "If anyone cuts anything out of this, or adds anything in...)
But still, this isn't a religious debate.

Also, I hate secrets and lies.

If there's one thing that sums up Wrong, it's got to be the Crazy Frog, closely followed by George Bush in a bikini.

More seriously, I would submit that peadophilia and violence towards innocent people are wrong. Oh, and sickeningly worded Christmas cards, middle lane hogs and people who say "shew" instead of "showed".

Does anyone else see the irony?  :P

Theft, which I think is the basis of all evil. Theft of love. Theft of rights. Theft of justice. Theft of life.

I see the irony, in retropsect.
But I'd like to replace my entire rant with what you said.
1. Crazy Frog (not because its annoying, but because they stole it off the internet, then started selling it. Also, people who have it are dumb asses.
2. George Walter Bush.

I dislike prudes. And so heres a little something for all the prudes out there. I'll hide it, incase you are reading in work/school.
Spoiler
It's a man's obligation to stick his boneration in a women's separation; this sort of penetration will increase the population of the younger generation.

I have a friend who is a "punk rocker". He's in a band, and like many other punk bands, all of their music is about how the government is shit. None of them come out directly and say what is wrong, just things like "FUCK THE GOVERNMENT!" and "DOWN WITH GOVERNMENT!1111". I went a head and asked him what he wanted the government to do.

"If the government agreed to do whatever you wanted it to, what would you have them do."
"I dunno... Change?"
"Ok, so what do you do when the government "comes to its sences?" and changes the government to exactly what you want?"
"Write more songs complaining about it."

It's people like that that make this world shitty. If you've got something to complain about, fine. But if you don't, please don't make other peoples lives miserable about something you don't even know about.

^ This is wrong, read the first post.

Anyway, I believe that forcing your beliefs on other people is wrong, and I agree, most "punks" are just wannabes, rebelling cos they think its cool.

Even, SSH, if they're forcing their beliefs on us? Freedom only stretches so far - namely, as far as the next person's freedom.

I prefer not to think "this, that, the other is wrong," but I'd rather focus on what's right. And in my opinion, what is right is agreed upon by whole host of religions. Whether you're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Pagan, Budhist, Sikh, Taoist or just about whatever, most agree on some variation of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Would you like someone to steal from you? No? Then don't do it.
Would you like someone to hate you? No? Then don't do it.
Would you like someone to kill you? No? Then don't do it.

Doing something to someone else that would make them feel bad, would harm them in any way shape or form- THAT is wrong.

Dragonrose, those are good thumbrules, but impossible to have as ever-present, ever-lasting dogmas...
Most likely, you will some day face a situation where you might have to make somebody hate you.
There is a chance the same will go for both stealing, and, heaven forbid, even killing.

Well, I pretty much go by The Book in this one  :) There are many things that are wrong, but doing a wrong thing doesn't make you a bad person. Wrong things with wrong intentions, however, do. I think.
Just to be original, I'll mention one thing - I think cursing your parents, or being impolite to them, or disrespecting them in any way is very very very very wrong. If there's a thing in my life I'd change, I'd take back everything I ever said that made my father or mother feel bad. Ooops, I didn't get too pathetic here, I hope...

The question wasn't what would I never ever ever do in my entire life, just what I consider to be "wrong."

I don't always follow my own rules, and I honestly don't think anyone can go through life without breaking them occasionally. I've hated people, I've hurt people, and I've broken promises. But I try not to. I try not to notice the behaviours of others that drive me insane. I try not to be cruel or violent (I'm ashamed to say I've smacked more than one person). I try to keep my promises. When I've broken my own rules of behaviour, which I do a lot more than I wish I did, I feel bad. Because I can recognize I did something wrong.

And that's my thoughts.

True.

But I also think it's wrong to not expect backlash if your beliefs are controversial.

AND yes, sometimes "Christian" beliefs are controversial.  You can speak your beliefs, but be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions.
