This seems to be getting pretty ugly. This morning I saw online that North Korea had threatened to Wipe the USA off of the map.
Will this come to peace, or maybe even war?
Scary times..Scary times...Let's Hope for Peace in the End.
Just thought I would bring this up.
Bah, North Korea attacking anyone is as unrealistic as the Iran attacking Israel. Both countries would be wiped out immediately.
It's just that the Korean leaders feel provoked by the nearby manoevers of the USA/South Korea fleet.
I doubt anything will change after that statement. Although I consider it rather stupid of them to threaten anyone instead of doing some diplomatic stuff to improve the international relations and perhaps get some food into their country.
Just another "look at us" statement to which many just end up thinking, "shutup, dicks"
It seems the only way N. Korea can ever infiltrate news in the West is by them bragging about nukes. It's okay IMO, they just haven't gotten round to 21st century thinking yet, and just need to continue to be dicks to get anyones interest.
Oh, and I'm not calling N. Koreans dicks, just those in charge, and Jing Kong Yim or Kim Yong Jil or however the Fick Fack Fuck you pronounce it ::)
If he starts wiping countries out he's just going to end up so wonewy. Oh so wonewy. :D
It's just a speculative news article to make you feel afraid because that's what the media is for on a slow news day.
I haven't heard much about the pandemic that was going to wipe out 6 billion people recently. The press will have to replace this story with another soon to encourage the sales of their papers.
It's very unlikely that anything would happen, especially since America could destroy N. Korea with the turn of a key and a press of a button. Great, now I've jinxed it. :)

Actually...it's mainly the other people (US, South Korea, some EU-countries) who yammer on about nukes in NK...NK itself clams that their nuclear energy program is strictly that: a program for nuclear energy; not weapons.
I don't have an insult intention, but this threat news reminds me of this proverb: "The barking dog wouldn't bite".
Especially after the Ryugyon Hotel (http://www.esquire.com/the-side/DESIGN/hotel-of-doom-012808?kw=ist) fail, why they can't admit they have been unsuccessful?
I'd be very, very careful about treating this as a one-sided issue. NK has as much right as any country to have a nuclear program, have reactors, make rockets, or whatever. M.A.D. has been shown to work for well over 50 years as a deterrent, and I in no way advocate the use of nuclear weapons. To me this is merely an issue of whether one country should or should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons, and the only answer I can think of as a Constitutionalist is yes, they should. Sooner than later the western powers will need to get their fingers out of all the pies and focus on the stability of their own nations (which are in serious trouble as it stands).
He, I second every word that ProgZ just posted. Exactly my thoughts.
Yeah, I'll have to second that seconding (does that work out to thirding or fourthing?). However, personally, I'm proportionally more comfortable with a country having nuclear weapons with how much it has to lose, as well as the sanity/reality connection of its leaders. As in, politicians in a democracy need to interface with the real world at least every now and then. Judging from their recent behaviour, the government of North Korea doesn't. Plus, rampant nationalism really isn't something you want to have in your government. That just... sort of upsets me.
I'm going to South Korea in August for two weeks. Only decided to do it a few days ago. I have a friend out there who I'm going to visit. The other week I spoke to her about the North Korean "crisis" and she told me she's not worried in the least about the threats of the North. Infact she says she hates her own president Lee Myung-Bak more than the North's Mr Kim.
I see it as epic CIA fail.
Meddling with dangerous regimes and weak countries for the last century has brought USA nothing but undeserved dollars and bloodthirsty enemies.
I don't believe that nukes would fly in my lifetime though. It rather seems that countries tired of "world police" see acquiring nuclear weaponry as last chance to decide their own matters by themselves. Sorta like new arms race.
Even though I think balancing powers such as Russia or US are neccessary with all the crazies on thrones. We don't want back to middle ages, no? War is way beyond being chilvarous these days.
Look at it on the upside! Sure, wiping the USA off the face of the planet would be a bad thing (esp. during Mittens Vice ed. tm), but at least this would make the sea level drop significantly since the entire land mass which is the USA-half of the north American continent (or half the land-mass of the entire continent) could now become a reservoir of sea-water. (ocean-water), which would make sea levels drop significantly, thus protecting our (Dutch) coastline (except that all those formerly sea-side busineses will have to relocate or go bust)
If enough people will feel that it's an unfair trade-off (our entire country vs. our coastline) then we should petition Kim Jong Il that maye his intentions are ill-advised. Certainly if enough of us petition him he will see the error of his ways and change. He's a dictator, but only to his own pople, right? So unless he's trying to branch out into other countries as well (fan out over the planet) He will listen to us, right?
Did you get the pun? Kim Yong Il, Ill-advised, ... I'm a comedy genius ;D

I think he can't say 'no' to us if we make a game about this.

No-one deserves to have a destructive nuclear programme. We are more clever than that. At least, I can only dream we were. Why do I say we. The general public aren't the government. The government are. :| "We" tested a theory and it worked. Leave it at that, abolish nukes and make it illegal to possess any! :P Man nukes is such a gash subject & it enrages me that NK have to use it to gain attention to their power. I want to respect NK for
something, but not for standing up to the West over Nuclear powers. But hey, its all a media "fear factory" scandal.
While a nuke-free world would be nice, I don't think it's much of a realistic possibility. Classic Prisoner's Dilemma, guys. Plus, there are a few states that only really still have pull in international politics because they have nukes, and I don't think you could convince them to give up what influence they have.
And North Korea is... not really governed by its population, which is sort of isolated from the real world. Propaganda is nearly as rampant as starvation and drafts over there, and I'm pretty sure the military wouldn't have any qualms with shooting demonstrants.
Here's to hoping they show those depressing post-apocalypse movies in North Korea. Kim Yong Il's sort of a movie geek, right? :P
Someone send Mad Max to North Korea, quick!
It would be great if we could make Kim Jong Il watch "Team America, World Police" the way they made Saddam watch "South Park, Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" But we don't need to do anymore invading.
Who made Saddam watch that? I've never heard of that.
According to the South Park website after they captured Saddam they made him watch the South Park movie. Not as harsh as water boarding.

Would it?
I think horror of nuclear war is only thing that has kept us from WW3. Since 1945, there has been loads of reasons to start a new global war.

Many of those reasons have to do with nuclear arms. A nuke-free World would be nice, but we'll just come up with some other way to manipulate countries into doing what we want. Be it different types of "super weapons" or full scale invasions of bothersome countries.
I just wish there was some other way to manipulate countries, rather than threatening total destruction. Like photos of Kim Jong Il wearing a dress or something.

As I said, it's not really feasible, for a variety of reasons. I
also think a completly violence-free world would be nice, as would a UNO with actually some pull, or a world without dictatorships or failing states. None of that is going to happen (at least not completly), but, well, one can dream...

By states I'm assuming you mean countries. In that case let me correct you.

Yeah, probably; I meant it like "France", not "Texas". Sorry if that was unclear.
However, I don't think you're right with your "correction". Neither Japan nor Germany, for example, have nuclear weapons of their own (and Japan isn't even part of a "sharing program"), and I've always been under the impression that the 2nd and 4ths largest economies in the world would wield some power in international affairs.
