Title: What is YOUR favourite lame movie of the 80's?
Post by: LordHart on Sat 24/04/2004 00:15:40
With all the other threads, I thought, I might as well put one up. Okay, so instead of a regular movies thread like whats your favourite, or what do you hate, I thought about the movies that were so lame that we used to watch as kids, that they are just great.

My favourite is probably the BRAT Patrol. It's a Disney movie, when they still made good kids movies, not all lame ones like todays movies. Anyway, it had Sean Astin, one of the kids from The Explorers (another great 80's kid movie with River Pheonix and Ethan Hawke, with Robert Picardo doing some voices in it) and then the other kids were really forgetable because they were pretty much nothing after they did this movie.

Anyway, the group was odd, as Astin played a Surfer dude kinda guy who got around on his motorised skateboard (so cool), the kid from Explorers was just a lame whinger who bitched and moaned alot. The others were a red-headed geek and his equally annoying little brother and then a black chick...

The whole story revolved around these kids, who were misfits living on an Air Force base, who uncover a plot to steal priceless computers from the Air Force... all run by the dirty cop from Robocop 2 who they hack up with medical intruments. :P

Anyway, that movie was cool... what's yours?!! :D

i personally think this thread is legit and should remain.

C'mon, obscure movies of the 80s? Thats sweet!

Goonies is of course the classic of this genre.

There was another where Frankenstein teamed up with these kids in a treehouse and they took on the other evil monsters: a werewolve, the creature from black lagoon, a vampire etc.  i never remembered the name of this movie however.

I enjoyed Three Ninjas as well as Surf Ninjas, guess that's early nineties.

more to come..

Revenge of the Nerds!!

A very lame movie, but will always be a classic to me.

To this day, that movie cracks me up, and i seem to remember almost every line of it.

I wouldn't class that as a lame movie, that just rocks too much to be called lame! :D

Labyrinth.

Sorry, you have to admit, that movie was lame. Jennifer Connelly was a terrible actress in it, and David Bowie wasn't too hot either. The special effects may have been awesome then, but they're sad now.

But this is still one of my favourite movies of all time.

So awesome.

The Beastmaster.

I used to see it ALL the time on TV when I was a kid.  I think TBS owns the rights to it, so they play it all the time.  Anyway, it's just stupid fantasy, sword and loincloth fun.  No point, just stupid comic-book fantasy......

I must have seen The Beastmaster like 180 times.

Have you seen Beastmaster II and Beastmaster III: Eye of Braxus? Beastmaster was always a favourite of mine too, probably because Marc Singer was Beastmaster, and he was also in V... which rocked in its own respects. :D

"Dune" made in 1984 by David lynch!
This movie is as bad as can be! And as cool as can be.

The way they freaked up Frank Herbert's book is extremely BAD. Virgin Interactive & Westwood were stupid enough to release games including mistakes from movie...

Yet, It's a really cool movie, when keeping in mind that they didn't use a single byte of 3D graphics. And sound!!! Neatest sound effects ever.

Ain't I right, Roger?

Pee-wee's Big Adventure would have to be my favorite lame movie. I remember nearly shitting my pants when Large Marge did the spooky face.

They don't make them like that anymore.

Since The Goonies can in no way be described as "lame", I must disagree.

The Princess Bride perhaps? Not really lame, but it has a certain charmingly cheesy tone.
Here's a good one: Big Trouble in Little China. YEAH.

I loved "The Stuff", have you seen it? That movie where a white stuff came out of a meteorite (I guess) and some people ate it and thought it tasted great and started selling it as if it were yogurt and it became incredibly famous but later on it seemed to turn people into zombies. It was waaaay cool and waaaay lame. I love the scene when the black guy (why do they always kill the black guys?) comes very excited like he has a solution for the problem or something and then he starts opening his mouth like thirty of more centimeters and the stuff starts coming out of it... the rest of the corpses were already deformed when they found them so it's the first time in the movie where you see how the stuff acts... The special effect was absolutely lame, but I loved it anyway it made me laugh.

And there's also one of my favourites: "the return of the killer tomatoes" I think it's called like that. I never saw the first one (and I don't know if there is a first one or it just started with that movie). That one was great, I love the part where they run out of fundings for the movie and add some commercial advertisements, like the mad scientist that turns back and in his robe there's a big "PEPSI" advertisement.

Trap - The Princess Bride??!?!  Argh!!  I wouldn't call it lame, but that's just me!

Now Big T in little C (that's why my brother and I call it) I would agree was pretty lame.  Fun to watch though.  "May the wings of liberty never lose a feather."

My vote goes to: Stallone: COBRA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090859/)

The lamest movie of the 80's and perhaps of all time.  The only movie that it could possibly come in second to would be State Property (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301893/)

If you haven't seen either ... don't.  You'll never get the time back.

Big Trouble in Little China is a tough one to beat...

it's oh so lame and I can just imagine if they went through actually making it a sequel to Buckaroo Banzai

But I'm going to try and best your Big Trouble in Little China with KRULL, but I think I'd lose

/me makes this a card battling game

I saw The Stuff, and for some reason it gave me nightmares.

I wouldn't consider the Labryinth Lame. I love the movie. It's cheesy yes...but lame?

I vote Mario Brothers, even as a kid I didn't enjoy it.

EDIT - it's an early nintees movies, but why should we be limited to just one decade?

Any one seen "Hell comes to Frog Town" starring Rowdy Rody Piper - Thats gotta be up there with Plan 9 from outer space as one of the Lamest movies out there - plus it was made in the eighties. (I liked Plan 9 though.). What not lame enough you say ? How about 'RollerBlade Warriors'! Ah (wipes tear from eye) thats the stuff.

I also like fast times at Ridgemont high - but dont consider it to be lame (just plain cool)/

This was a classic staring Christopher Atkins & Kristy McNicol, it was filmed in Australia too, I've been to the mansion that was the castle in the movie.

Now this fits into the category

I'd have to go with The Archer: Fugitive from the Empire (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0082027/) aka The Archer and the Sorceress.
I loved this movie as a kid and I managed to obtain a VHS copy via eBay a few years back. It's pretty cheesy of course, but the snake men still rock!

Follow-ups, some more lame than others, but all childhood favorites:

The Ice Pirates (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0087451/) - Gotta love the kung-fu robots! Now where's the DVD already??
Enter the Game of Death (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0062936/) - Definitely the best Bruce Lee clone movie of them all!
House (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0091223/)
Enemy Mine (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0089092/)
Innerspace (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0093260/)
Krull (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0085811/)
Labyrinth (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0091369/)
Legend (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0089469/)
and many, many more...

*Sigh*, those were the days...

EXCELLENT choices man!  I was just talking with somebody the other day about Ice Pirates.  I was able to find a bootleg DVD of it, but didn't take the risk of buying it.

Legend is one of my favorite movies.  Tom Cruise cheesing it up with Mia Sara (Sloan Peterson from Ferris Buelers Day Off).  The Extended Directors Cut DVD for Legend is awesome.

I guess my idea of lame is different from everyone elses'. I didn't consider Labyrinth or Big Trouble in Little China lame. Sure, Labyrinth is cheesy and goofy, but I guess I consider 'lame' movies to be the really bad (but fun to make fun of) ones. Like...Krull or Red Sonja or something.

Here are some little known facts about Bill & Ted:

The year it was released, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure won every Oscar available at the time (yes, even best actress & foreign film(?)). They had to create TWO best actor awards, one for each of the leads, 'cos Rufus got best supporting. They kept this a secret from everyone though, so the other filmmakers did not get jealous.

Keanu Reeves has admitted that he was so wooden in The Matrix because he 'wanted people to remember him for his role in Bill & Ted'.

Research has shown that if murderers spent less time killing people & more time watching Bill & Ted, then murders across the world would drop by 817%.

Bill & Ted cures all nasty diseases. Yes, even that one you can't pronounce.

George Lucas once said that Star Wars Eps 1 & 2 were worse than the others because he was so distracted by the awesomeness of Bill & Ted.

If Bogus Journey was a women, 7329% of men (& 83% of women) said they would marry it.

The music of Wild Stallions was actually going to be released on an album, but the government decided it was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too awesome, so they banned it from existance

The two films are, in one word: excellent

Ergo, Babloyi (if that IS your real name), I insist that you follow the advice of one Mr Macphee & take that back, lest I rip out your liver & use it to play catch with some angry bears, while you are still attached to it.

That is all.

I have always found it sad that the cyclops always knew he was going to die by getting crushed in the entrance way to the Black Fortress... wouldn't you have just commited suicide if you knew that would be the way you'd die (but then again, he didn' see that he'd kill himself so he couldn't do it :P)... :'(

The cyclops didn't know he'd get crushed, he fell behind from the party because he knew that he was supposed to die in this one canyon and he couldn't not die or he'd die by some other worse way but he avoided that death to help his friends and then he died in a worse way, which was being smooked by a door...

good lord i wish i hadn't seen that movie so many times.......
Title: Re:What is YOUR favourite lame movie of the 80's?
Post by: LordHart on Tue 27/04/2004 03:42:47
But how do you know he was supposed to die in the canyon? Maybe he knew that he had to be left behind so that he could save the day, and then be just in time to get smooshed... because if he went with them originally, they would have got in earlier... so it'd be odd, having a conversation going:

"Leave my friends, my fate is to be smooshed inside this wall."
"THAT'S THE WAY YOU DIE?!"
"Yes..."
"Ahahahaha!!! You suck!" :D

God damn, this movie sounds great! I've never seen it and I'm now thinking that maybe my otherwise fantastic childhood was ruined for not having seen this... Krull.

I think my "favourite lame movie" is hard to say because naturally, I don't think the movies I like are lame. I DO think that they're weird, perhaps had extremely low budgets and ridiculous plot and dialogue in a lot of areas - but it's the lovable kind of ridiculous. As much as I know so many of you will say "but these aren't lame!!1!!11!", you -know- what I mean. ^_- These are movies that I could argue are lame with no problems at all - it doesn't mean I don't love them to death.

I'd have to say (and these are also among my favourite movies EVER, regardless of lameness or time period):
Goonies
Labyrinth
Return to Oz
Never-Ending Story (1 only)
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (How can you not love a movie with God Gave Rock and roll To You in it?!)

...and to a lesser extent:
Breakfast Club
Masters of the Universe
The Lost Boys
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
All the Ewok movies (Caravan of Courage and... that other one... the obvious one)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

wow... I did not think there would be such a huge outcry against my comment. Don't you see? I liked it. It was 80s. It was...um....slightly less lame than other lame movies, and therefore it was my favourite slightly less lame than other lame movies movie of the 80s. I never knew there was another movie of it though. I will have to see that now. Maybe it will cause me to end up taking it back. Also, even though Babloyi is not my name, it is as good as any alias I can think of.
