It's 6:30 in the morning, I'm getting ready to go to bed and that's when I hear a *thump* outside of our door that leads to the balcony - both cats are staring with ears pointed upwards and I'm scared as hell. What if someone's hiding on my balcony? I live on the 4th floor and have seen someone climb up easily before on the front side one day because the guy had forgotten his keys (I live in an apartment building btw). I'm probably just paranoid or something but I'm too afraid to go investigate... should I go wake my husband up? I can't keep my eyes off of the window...
I wish I owned some kind of weapon right about now... :(
That's what I get for not going to sleep at a reasonable hour.
Um... "Help Me Internet, There is someone Possibly breaking into my house." I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but most peoples reactions would be to either go wake up their other half or call the police? Personally though I'd just go and check it out. It could have been anything and chances are it isn't someone trying to break in. Suck it up, open the door, find out that it is nothing.
If its a thief then you can push him off the balcony, if its santa coming early then be happy.
Seriously, check it out. I know I would :P
Ambientcoffeecup --> Thanks for the help, bud... I'm honestly really scared here. You know what, just forget about it. This just shows how insensitive most people on here are. You guys happy now? You've made me cry. :'(
There's nothing wrong with posting for help with a question like this, I've seen it done a dozen times (ie. yahoo answers "spilled bleach on carpet! What to do?!" etc)
I think if you don't have enough courage to go see, you should just put a weapon nearby ( just for in cases) and just snuggle up to your man.
If you live in an apartment, It's probably the upstairs neighbour's stuff that they left on the balconie or something...don't worry too much, you know you have someone to protect you...
maybe the guy left his keys again..
Are you kidding? I'm sorry if my post upset you or anything I wasn't trying to be insensitive. I'm just saying that it is probably nothing and I'm fairly sure it couldn't hurt to check it out. If you are really scared then I'm sure your husband wouldn't mind if you woke him up to get him to check it out anyway.
Well, I would go ahead with my baseball bat/kitchen knife. You know, they cant help you much, but trust me, the psychology works here really nicely. I would just make it quickly, that's all. There is no way around it. Go and look. Or wake up your husband. The possiblity of someone breaking in is VERY low. Well, you could do nothing of course, but if it is really someone breaking in, you cant help yourself anyhow without a weapon.
(Tell me who is so dumb to break in in the night when everyone is at home)
6:30 in the morning? it's prebably some beighbour going to work who dropeed some stuff to the lower floor balcony or something. I'd go check it out myself and report to everyone here. Without a weapon. But that's just me.

a) You married? :'(
b) Buy a Taser gun.. they are working neat in Canada lately.
c) Use aloperidol.
Oh... Nightfable!
did you call the police? There is nothing wrong in calling the police if you think something is wrong. They are there to "serve and protect" (although you're not in the states). Do that, immediately if you've not done it yet.
Babies asleep? Lock the doors and go to their bedroom, or take them to yours. Be together. At least this is what I'd do. Weapons won't do much good really. Will they? I mean, it's too soon after the birth of your 2nd daughter and you're a female with 2 very fragile people under your care. Better to give them what you want (????????????????) (<-not sure just suggesting without being so sure, as I was when I told you to "call the police")
Let us know, will you?
I don't really understand how if you feel threathened that someone has broken into your home, you feel you have the luxury of posting on a forum and possibly waiting for a number of hours for a reply. Doesn't common sense say that the whole issue would probably be settled way before a reply even arrives? Why didn't you come on IRC if you wanted an urgent reply? Also, what help can a bunch of remote strangers possibly be in a situation like this?
I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but this is possibly the 'weirdest' advice thread I've ever come across. I'd understand if you were asking for advice on how to protect yourself and your family from possible future threats, but this...
I would have probably picked the IRC channel to ask for advice on this one, responses are a little faster. :)
It is (was?) probably nothing, but you can never be too sure. Like, one morning I woke up to the doorbell, and assumed it was the mailman, so I was waiting for him to drop a note of absence in the letterbox and take off so I could get back to sleep (I was the only one home). But I heard nothing. Then there was a ruckus out back. That's the sort of shit that makes your neck hairs stand up. So I grabbed my crowbar and went downstairs. I looked out the garden window, and saw a man CLIMBING OVER THE FREAKING FENCE! I almost shit my pants as he approached the back door, until I realized it was a neighbour. He must have dropped something over the fence when he was working on the roof. So false alarm luckily. But then again the guy looked like a goddamn burglar: tall, scrawny-looking dude in his dirty jeans and sleeveless baseball tee.
That sort of shit is why I have a crowbar. I may be over-paranoid about these things, but if the shit ever hits the fan, I'll be prepared. Now just to wait until my country legalizes beating up burglars...
I have to say that I don't feel ambientcoffeecup's post was out of line at all in this situation, Nightfable. I mean, think about this: in the time you've taken to post this thread someone could have come in and robbed you already, whereas you could have been on the phone with the police and have a squad car on the way. This is the point he was making, that turning on your computer to ask what to do is a bad bad bad bad idea when you suspect danger. Remember, indecisiveness is your chief enemy in crisis situations; you need to act, and the best way is to make sure your home is secure if you can and then call the police.
Well, if you guys want to know, I finally went to sleep after waiting for the light of day to show. I'm sorry about my outburst, I was sitting at my computer at the time and was really tired and jumpy. It seemed like the right thing to do, since I was browsing the AGS forums to start with and I felt really alone out here in the living room and the balcony looked like a very real menace to me. My MSN Messenger doesn't work, if it did, I would have messaged someone I knew instead (that would have been wiser, because now I feel really stupid).
I thought maybe the online members would reassure me; offer me a few words of comfort but I should have foreseen I would be picked on instead. I definitely need to stop posting here, this community is way too unpleasant.
(Thanks to the ones that did leave some positive replies.)
I am currently a student living in a village near my university. Two weeks ago there was an attempted rape on a student in the village. I don't walk alone anywhere after dark, and I encourage my friends not to do so as well. If you're calling a taxi and feeling unsure, ask for the name and licence plate number of the taxi that they're sending so that you can double check that the correct taxi is coming to pick you up. If you're feeling vulnerable and think someone is trying to get in, double check that your doors are locked and bolted, and CALL THE POLICE. Sitting and waiting is never the right thing to do if you feel for your personal safety.
c_leksutin is ALIVE!!!!

As far as I understood the comments, nobody picked on you. Some people displayed surprise that with your husband in the same house, you'd rather ask a bunch of strangers on the internet what to do, then wake him up.
That's not picking on you.
This forum isn't unpleasant, but I guess you might be a bit to sensitive.
As far as my experiences go, this is one of the most layed back places on the internet.
Yes I am sensitive, yes it was stupid of me, you guys are right, it was a brain fart on my part... my bad. Now I'll go on my merry way.
Ambientcoffeecup, didn't you, like, complain about how unwelcoming these forums were to "newbies" about 24 hours ago?
Having said that, I agree that asking for help in a forum while a flying zombie is about to smash in the balcony door is a bit unreasonable.
Nightfable, you're on the intarweb. That's no place for sensible people ;)
Seriously though, don't get all sulky because people are wondering about what you did.
You were jumpy and probably not only tired but really exhausted, so put it on that & forget about it.
Ok, this time it was a false alarm, but Nightfable, you might wanna read up on this, so next time you'll be better prepared:
Zombie Survival Guide - Complete Protection from the Living Dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombie_Survival_Guide)
Ok!
Now I fear for the worst!
I think that nightfable's house was broken in and now the person behind the later posts is not her! How can we know if she's the true Nightfable, or not? I think that we need something clever to think.
Come on Adventure gamers! THINK!

Yeah I did. But my post was not meant to offend at all I was actually just saying "WHY ARE YOU ONLINE, CALL POLICE INSTEAD." Because it is slightly worrying asking the internet for help when/if someone is breaking into your house.
Hahaha, thanks, I really needed a good laugh. I admit it was silly of me to think there was someone on my balcony wanting to break in at 6:30 in the morning - and even sillier to ask an adventure game forum about advice on what to do when I should have dialed 911 or ran to wake up my hubby. My judgment was clouded from exhaustion, I'm sorry.
Here's some cheesecake!

Nikolas: We could just ask some of the forum registration questions. ;D Anyways what kind of thief goes on to a forum the homeowner was on and complain about replies, for a post they never made.
Nightfable: I don't know if my post upset you further, but I was just trying to shed some humor on the subject while showing my opinion on what you should do.
EDIT: Nice to see your still you...... or are you?
