I sometimes wonder when CJ is going to get bored of working on AGS and then decide to not work on it anymore. How many years will he keep working on a program that is free and he works on it in his own time, not even making a dime. I guess we could still use older versions of AGS, but then i am guessing the forums will vanish. I am always thinking when he will say AGS is done, i'm sick of programming 24 hours a day and then tell us all to have a good night and then disappear. Will this happen?? Maybe CJ wants to do more in his life than program AGS and upgrade for us.

This is intended to be a fun thread, but also what if?? It will happen someday. He could also sell the rights to a new owner. But i fear that day.

i'm getting a little verklempt, so talk amongst yourselves..

The day CJ quits is the day AGS goes Open Source!
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

Steel Drummer

Open Source AGS would be awesome! It'd be totally pimped out with all kinds of crazy plugins... Or CJ could decide to sell the rights to Sony. :(
I'm composing the music for this game:

Err, what prevents that from happening already?

Everybody being lazy and waiting for CJ to do it for us...?

Nine Toes

Come on, this is the 21st century.  If Mr. Jones decides it's time to hang up his compiler, then we'll just clone him and force his clone into servitude.  If the clone refuses to work on a new version of AGS, then we'll clone him again, and make the new clone watch us blow away the old clone.

Seriously, now: I think, to ensure AGS never suffers any one of those fates, everyone should make sure and show him some gratitude every now and then for everything he does to make this program so great.

Watch, I just killed this topic...

CJ: "What is this thread about me quitting in the future? I can't take the pressure! I.. quit!!!!"

Now look what you did.  ;)

Nothing lasts forever. If CJ wanted to quit, I won't be pointing a gun at him to continue, it's his choice! Just like if a band stops making music that I love; I'd be very sad but I can't force them to keep at it.

Also, if this forum died, I'd still have the online mates I'd befriended on here!

Akatosh

It's the Internet. You can't actually kill something on the Internet, especially not communities. And if CJ quit, I'd find him and flood his bank accounts with donations until he gets a real bad consciousness and comes back  :=

InCreator

Yeah, with 3840 users listed, and atleast third(?) of them acutally active, we could collect load of donations.

I don't think that it's the CJ who quits, but AGS that'll be - like - ready?

Ghost

The day CJ quits will be the day he gets the Make My Game button work...

No, honestly, the man must have some love for AGS. As far as stability and features are concerned, AGS can be considered THE standard since, huh, version 2.6? 2.5, even? Everything that's done recently is polishing things up, adding little stuff that makes life better for the community. And that's what keeps CJ working on this big blue cup- a soft spot for adventures, a community that cares, and lots of caffeine.

The day that CJ quits will be the day THE MIGHTY BIG BLUE CUP BREAKS
And legend has it that the cup of destiny is made of diamond and can never break.

Really though why think this way would he really want to quit    ... I dont think so
But if he did it would be because he has a brand new love

Will Tony Hawk ever quit skating
Will David Suchet ever get rid of that dodgy moustache
Will David Attenborough ever stop documenting animals

But someday he'll die and that means unless there is a future generation CJ AGS is going to die, too and waaaah, it's all so senseless!

I have it on good authority that CJ can only be killed if you cut off his head.

There can be only one!

Caffeine? I doubt it :P

What really keeps CJ going with AGS is that for a week, twice or thrice yearly, he goes on drinking binges.

No community, no binges  :'(

Buckethead

Well I don't see why CJ would leave. I don't know him very well but if I were him I wouldn't leave. He has build up a great engine and like wise community. Money isn't the only thing of value you know. Many people enjoy AGS and it's forums, I'm sure CJ is proud of that (I know I would be). Besides if one person leaves doesn't mean the forum will colapse and die. And I think AGS can also last pretty well without any updates.

Either way there isn't too much to worry about. Only if you know CJ very well and you might loose a friend if he quits. Well anyway lets pretend like CJ is going to run AGS and it's forum forever.

Hammerite

Yeah but he might get shot too.
i used to be indeceisive but now im not so sure!
