Since I'm getting into this whole AGS thing in a serious way (and my trial version won't accept a re-install, damn XP with its fancy system register. How I miss Win95) I've decided to buy Paint Shop Pro.
At the moment I'm looking at PSP8 on eBay, as it suits my price range. Although I'd probably like to get PSP 9.
The problem is that unless I want to pay almost full retail price (over 50 quid) I don't get a manual or any documents or boxes, just a disc.
Now, most software titles today have CD-Keys, or Athentication Codes somewhere on the packaging.
I was wondering if PSP 8 or PSP 9 has a CD key requirement, before I go and blow 20 bucks on a CD which lacks that code. Anyone got PSP who could give me advice?
Thanks.
I am not sure what you're asking. But don't get PSP8, as it is very bad. 9 is better, and 7 is way more stable than 8, without lacking in anything really significant.
My advice is, get the Gimp for free. It can do anything Paint Shop Pro does. If you are intent on going with something else than the industry standard (Photoshop), then why not the Gimp?
Two words: The Gimp
I will third going for The Gimp. Don't waste your money if you're just going to be making backgrounds.
Paint.NET is also a fine choice.

+1 on The Gimp.
Or look into getting Paint Shop Pro. Not bogged down with as many impressive effects, but still an excellent piece of software.
The gimp is excellent, and it's free. At least give it a try before spending lots of $ on something else.
Go with whatever you're comfortable working with, that is PS for me, and last time i used the Gimp, i couldn't stand using it, perhaps it's changed or allows you to customise it, but meh :p
Am I the only person on the face of the planet who just doesn't GET how to use the GIMP? I mean, I'm pretty damn good in PhotoShop and PSP and know my way around both very well, but GIMP is just too cumbersome and complicated for me.
On another note, I tried installing PSP 9 and it kept crashing on me constantly and eventually wouldn't load at all. So I stuck to PSP 8 and couldn't be happier. :P
I hate the GIMP, I would have recommended it, but I actually had to use it recently, it's terrible for drawing or pixelling, especially if you use a tablet (not because it doesn't support them, but because if you click off a window by mistake with it, as you are prone to do with a tablet, you need to bring all the seperate toolbars back to the top of the window order, it's hell). If you can make the windows work more like PS/PSP or even if they must have no mai window make it work like PS on a mac, then it'd be usable.
Paint.NET seems nice if you want something more PSP looking (probably less features, but you won't really need them). Either of these can do what PSP can do.
Its a matter of preference really. I prefer to stick with what I know, and what I can make good graphics with, which is PSP.
The Gimp doesn't seem right for what I have in mind. From what I hear, The Gimp is like Marmite: You either love it or you hate it.
I reckon those "Quantity of 30, CD only" lots on eBay are illegal copies, which although cheap, isn't what I want.
You need paypal anyway.
So can anyone who bought PSP tell me if I'll need a CD key? I mean, illegal copies are bad, but the money is good.
Yes, PSP has copy protection, and thusly you'll need to buy from Jasc directly, or a licenced copy from your local software provider (there's a list on the jasc website last time I checked), if you want to be 100% legit. I am not familiar with ebay, but these copies probably are illegal.
Well, since i don't have a credit card (or even know someone who does) I'll have to look on eBay for a good copy.
What's stopping you from going to a software store and buying a copy?
I seriously can't find it anywhere.
I checked most of the major software shops, most computer shops, no-one seems to have it.
Although I haven't tried PC World....
I'll go there tomorrow (since I don't have school) and shout at them until they agree to stock it.
I picked up a copy of Paint Shop Pro 8 in GAME on sale for about £20. They're normally retailing it about £40. Oh, and it had Animation Shop too - rather handy for checking my walkcycles. Might wanna check there, if you have a local GAME store.
I do have a local GAME but they didn't have it. And I did check, because thats where I bought Full Throttle.
Depending on where ya live, I could send you an extra copy of PhotoShop Elements I got for free with my Wacom....
We got Photoshop Elements with our PC. I've been using it for a while, and so far I could have done everything with it what I've needed to. So I suggest, if you can, take it.
Well I'm not above begging, and I live in Northern Ireland.
Although its Paint Shop Pro I'm after, not Photoshop.
Having said that Squinky is an amzing artist and he must use PS...
Hmm. I'd love that if you'd be willing to part with it.
Cool, let me check with the postal service site and see how much it is to go to ireland from here(USA), then I'll pm you and ask for details. Hey, and thanks for the compliment!
Cheers!
It shouldn't cost too much, and if it does, I'm willing to send you payment for the postage.
Looks like it will cost me about as much as a burger and fries, so its a go, no probs there. I just hope you like it, it was just a cd, but at least its legit. PM me your mailing address so I can stalk and kill you, er, send you the cd, heh...
Thanks Squinky, PM sent.
Actually, I live in Northern Ireland too. It was the Belfast branch I found it in. They still had some last time I was in (though stuffed in the back corner by the budget PC games). If you're anywhere near Belfast, you could still get one.
If you notice, they don't have many copies of Grim Fandango left in the Belfast GAME because I bought them all as presents for people.
I checked that bargain bin-like segment along the back wall but I didn't see it, and I was in just a few weeks ago.
