oh, right, i see, for some reason i was expecting it to cap it off at a lower number, i suppose 74gb or so is just as good as 80gb...
but one thing i'm not clear about is, if i installed win2k and then added a hard drive with data that was stored under win98 and therefore FAT32, would i be able to access this data without any problems or would win2k say "i see this hard drive is fat32, better let me fix that for you by deleting everything" ?

I agree with what Yak said, except use Windows 2000, rather than XP. XP is an annoying, sugar-coated piece of shit.

BOYD: Windows 2000 and XP don't try to change the drive's allocation table, it'll leave FAT32 as FAT32. I keep one of my HDs as FAT32, just in case I ever decide to install another OS for compatibilty reasons...

AGA, we've got a little link in the top-right.  It's called, "Edit."  ;)

Anyway, AGA's correct.  NTFS won't have any problem reading/writing FAT32 partitions.  However, if you convert the partition to NTFS, you won't be able to read it w/ Win98.  The Win2000 vs. WinXP thing is a matter of preference.  I prefer the interface, options, etc. of 2000 but I have found several games, drivers, & programs that refuse to work with it.  To be specific, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight would not display video, after trying various fixes, tech supports solution was to skip all cutscenes.  I also tried a couple shareware & abandonware titles, as well as various graphics applications.  All of these met with mixed success.  Win2000's performance on low-end hardware is abysmal, I don't know about XP's in comparison though.  It is my opinion that XP is a horrid dung-heap but is almost universally easy to use, thus my recommendation.  ;)

As much as i like Windows 98. I do prefer the stylish look of Windows XP. Is there anyway to get skins for Windows 98 that mimic the look of Windows XP?

I really like the look of internet explorer in Win XP, and i can't stand the boring and ugly icons of Win 98. So hopefully somebody will know if i can run Win 98, but have the look of Win XP.

It is funny though, because at work, my computer runs Win XP, but i go for the Classic look. Well, thats probably because its not my own personal computer, and it's much easier to use for the software that i have to use at work.

Hopefully, somebody will know if these skins exist at all. I did a search but came up empty.

if you want shell replacements (skins) for windows, try searching for WindowsBlinds or Chroma, but the novelty does soon wear off and you're away back to using standard grey or eggplant again...

I've just upgraded to XP from 98, I haven't had any problems yet, I'm just experimenting on if it's worth keeping.

So far I like it, and as far as the new look, I don't like it so I have it set up to look exactly how 98 looked anyway, so appearence wise there isn't much difference, even the start menu.

It's much easier to set up all your hardware, it actually detects it compared to 98, having to unplug and plug things in turn it on and off and manually search the cd for the drivers etc.

I have it so it doesn't contact Microsoft, if I want an update I'll see if I want it in my own time.

With good Anti-Virus software, Zone Alarm, Adware and Spybot, my computer feels safe and secure, (but it's probably now equiped with all the information to have me under 24 hour satellite watch)

I'd say XP if it's a choice between that and 98, as LGM said, get VDMS sound, and other programs like Abandon Loader and ScummVM and you should be able to run most of the old Sierra & LucasArts games with full sound. I can't speak for all games though.

[i'd say the timer issues in some sierra games would almost be impossible to get around these days if you have a fast processor, I couldn't slow Down QFG1 VGA to get through Yoricks Room right near the END with an AMD 1500+ processor so I can't Imagine my 2.6Ghtz P4 would have any sort of chance]

I've been told that some things in my pc won't work with 98 (for example my dvd player may not work). But I'm gonna try 98 anyway, and find out. Hopefully I'll be lucky.
