Title: Wireless type problems
Post by: veryweirdguy on Sun 03/08/2008 11:16:40
Hi!

I've been having a problem with my interwebs and I was hoping you guys (especially the ones who are smarter than me) could help? Pretty please?

I share a flat with 2 peeps so we have a wireless router that we all use (a Belkin if that's at all important.)

For me, it works fine, I can access any website I want, download stuff, run all programs, etc etc.

For them, it is not so simple. They can access most sites, but not others. Notable examples include Myspace, Hotmail, 110mb.com (where my website is hosted, which they can't access) among others. Also, they can't use MSN or P2P type stuff.

I haven't the foggiest what the problem could be as I am not educated in the slightest in these matters. I wouldn't know if I have to open any ports or change settings or anything. Also I should note my flatmates are using Vista while I'm still on XP.

Any ideas? Cheers.

Check whether their computer tries to use own DNS servers, set DNS to automatic.
If that doesn't work try the OpenDNS ones, check http://www.opendns.com/ on how to do that.

In my experience Vista doesn't like certain types of security on wireless. We had to set the router at home to have no security (yes, stupid I know, but it doesn't broadcast and it's on a weird channel, so we should be alright) because my sister's laptop uses Vista while the rest of us use XP.

Hey, I forgot to thank you both for your help. I tried the DNS thing, it was already set to automatic. I have tried OpenDNS like you suggest, have yet to see how that plays out. If that doesn't work, I will try the filthy Welshman's advice.

Thank you both!
