Title: World of Warcraft
Post by: magintz on Tue 17/05/2005 20:13:50
Any AGSers play? I'm real tempted to get it. What proffesions, classes, skills, species, server and stuff would be interesting to find out.

Yeah, me play ... Phinia (Gnome Warlock, lvl 14) on Argent Dawn server and Prowla (Undead Rogue, lvl 14) on the Runetotum server.
This game is pretty sweet...

Yea, it kinda grows on ya before you even notice.

I played WoW for about 96 hours straight after it came out.  But then I decided it was more important to not ruin my life playing video games, than to beat WoW.  anyway, the game can be addicting...it sure can....but it's got some really big design flaws that would keep me from being hooked for a really long time like Diablo did.

Basically, there are 3 major, huge, irrevocable flaws with this game.

1) You cannot trade items.  Everything is soulbound thats worth anything, even at low level.  This keeps the game balanced, and sucks all the fun out of it too.  You cant want to equip things and try them out because you might want to sell it someday.  It kills the economy.  Why make a MMORPG with a bad economy?  I dont know because I think learning to thrive in a game economy is the most fun part of rpg's...well, at least there are lots and lots of quests.  mindless ones, though.

2) There are no cool magic magic items.  As items get better, the stats get higher...and thas about it. Forget about having awesome pieces of equipment with cool names that do a zillion different cool effects.  Forget about uniques and sets and rares...nope, you just got magic items, and they have 1-3 abilities at level 1 and same thing at level 50...how boring.

3) The characters are highly not versatile.  That is, there's pretty much 1 strategy that works for any character.  No thought, no planning, no balancing skill points or making decisions to define how you will play...theres really 1 way that works for each character and this makes the game very dull.

1) I'm pretty sure i remember being able to trade with my friend. I dont know what youre talking about .

2) There are potions, such as shrinking or growing that you can use on people, or yourself, and that only comes at higher levels, for example.

Not that im trying to defend WoW here, but your 3 flaws are kinda flawed as well

1. You definatly CAN trade items, and there is even a public auction house to sell them. As long as you didnt equip it (unless its a white item, but then nobody would buy it) Dispite of what you claim, economy in the realms are good. Only items you gain from quests and the items wich are labeled "bind on pickup" are not sellable. Also items wich you use to create other items are "hot" and sell for lots on the Auction house.

2. There Are ALOT of different effects. There are <insert element here> bolts on strike, whirlwind attack on strike, and lots more. Cool glows are an item as well, but those are pretty expensive to buy since players themselfs need to enchant the glows (actually the glows do have stats, but everyone just buys it because it'll glow like friggin lightsaber).
Also set items are present in the game. You got the devias set, the lightforge set etc. etc. I particulary like the one of the warlock sets, it gives you a hood wich darkens your face and gives you red glowing eyes :).

3. you get skillpoints AFTER level 10, then you'll get 1 point to invest in 3 different skill trees, like in diablo 2. And there is no "1 playing style" It's just a matter of what you find to work the best. for example, on a mage i like to use arcane type spells with frost type bolts to slow the enemy, but my friend is fire all the way since it does huge amount of damage.
It is true however, that all skills are buyable, except for a few wich are located in the skill trees. But the skill trees do make a huge impact on the effect of these skills.

ScummBuddy - I haven't played it yet. I've been playing Star Wars KOTOR, thats why I havent been on Halo, although i play halo 2 round my friends place. I'll prolly be on halo tommorow tho. I'm playing WOW next friday, I'm joining Dragonmaw server where two of my friends are level 50 warrior and mage and have their own guild.

Still not sure about things yet. I waana maybe be a gnome coz they have cool machines and things. But I'm thinking about being a human preist as well :P

Sorry I'm late. But it IS a WoW thread so hope you'll forgive me. :)

Me and Moth (Andy/Tom Cruise) both play. We're on the Arathor server.
Our characters are level 40 Night Elf Druid (Desmorgana)
level 40 Night Elf Warrior (Mothhive)

And we have alts. :)

I regret that this game was ever created. It's worse than Everquest. My brother is on the fucking thing for 7 hours a day. THe only thing he gets off for is to eat, sleep (if that), shower and work.

It's sad.

Sorry for the insane bump, but I thought I might as well mention that I play this god forsaken game as well.

Mind you, I tend to only play on the weekends, as for I'm really busy this year.

I got the game in June, and I've dabbled a bit with a few characters, until I finally decided on my main, an Undead Priest, level 44 atm (trying to race my friends to 60, hehe).  Server: Dethecus, in case you by some remote chance play on the same server, which you probably dont.

The best part about WoW is the creation of hillarious comics mocking the very concept of the game

I found that funny.  And this probably applies to some people:

If I've already bought your stupid game it should be enough for you greedy bastards!
If you REALLY need extra cash for ypur servers or whatevger, how about you just stick some burger king ads up on the elven hall of elvenness or something?

I played WOW on my boyfriend's PC because he had broadband, which I do not possess. I learned how to play, and by the time I returned to college I had a level 7 female night elf hunter bitch. The reason I didn't get her any higher was because there was a shortage of weed prior to my departure...haha I crack me up no, actually it was because when WOW exists, sharing PCs becomes somewhat of a joke, especially when both users play WOW.

Sad.

I'll be there again in a few days, so I'll find out what server and stuff I was on and add some of you guys possibly or whatever... my WOW knowledge is very limited... I didn't get much of a chance to play it... it's not that great, really...

Lets reinstall the game and lets see who is the master then! (1 hour later) *doubleclick WoW icon* Hmm... This connection note didnt spend this long time last time i played. (4 hours later) I HATE YOU BLIZZARD/WINDOWS!!!!" Rebooting pc soon tho. Hoping that will fix the shite-.- :'( Got a lvl 35 dwarf hunter on the dragonmaw server

I quite like the idea of an online community, and the game looks impressive, and i'm keen to put something on my mac to see what kind of visuals itll put out (dual 2.5Ghz liquid cooled G5  8) ) but i refuse to sign up for a number of reasons:

1. it's about £9 a month. I could afford it, but that could tally up to some silly amounts, and i'd rather just get xbox live when i get my 360 instead.

2. I refuse to sit in front of my computer wearing a headset, pretending to be an elf, talking to socially retarded americans about 'crystals and fairies'. I'm keen on games, but i really do think there's something not quite right about that kind of thing.

3. If i got it, TLOTLL would probably get be put back until some time around 2009.

1: Steal your parents credit card! Hopefully they dont notice and everyone lived happily ever after.

2:If you dont like pretending to be an elf, just stay as far as you can get away from the roleplaying servers :D Regular pvp servers noone really pretends to be anyone  ;D And most people dont use headsets while playing.

3: Stay away from WoW!!!

Many peopple in pvp are annoying as hell.

During one of the betas I was in a leveel 3 naked gnome named "T3h_UB3R_TURK" and duels me, a level 21 human paladin.  Although it's still fun if you find someone compotent.  One of my friends plays it, like a level 46 human paladin named "Theline", and a level 21 human warlock named "Tato".  He let me try out his account once, and I found it fun.

I have played my fair share of online games, but I put all the blame on the guy that posted on these forums about Anarchy Online giving out free memberships. Once I chatted with Earlwood on Runescape....what a crappy game.

I typically play the game until I have gotten one guy pretty high, and it loses it's fun value. Then I make a kajillion alts and eventually quit.

Haven't tried Wow yet though, if it wasn't for City of Villians ( I got to beta it) coming out soon though I would.

Ohh Ohh whats it like? Do share. CoH was fun untill I got to that level where you HAD to group. I liked grouping, but sometimes I just wanted to run the story at my pace, and not doing team mate's missions all over the shop.

Right now I'm playing rakion. Which is free, and kinda like an MMO. http://rakion.softnyx.net/

Well, its sweet as hell.

I don't know how else to describe it really. You get cool-ass costume options and the power sets and character types are sweet. If you play a mastermind character, you can control a group of ninja, soldiers, robot (cool-as-hell), or zombies. It's just sweet.

Why has no one mentioned Guild Wars? I only just now got internet connection outside of work (that's right, I spend eight hours every night at work surfing AGS... What do YOU get paid to do...) and have been wanting to play an MMORPG for a while. I heard this one is free, and it looks awesome. I also wanted to play either the Matrix online or City of Heroes/Villains, but Guild Wars seems to be the best choice. Am I wrong, before I go out and spend 50 bucks on it? I might just play Neverwinter Nights online and fuhgeddaboudit.

My friend in NH got me started on DAoC:Catacombs, but I think it sucks all manner of buttock.

My very nerdy friend got GuildWars and WoW and was talking up GuildWars, until he played it for awhile. He says WoW has way more to offer and is worth the money. And he is someone who doesn't have a real job but will do odd jobs to make enough money to play WoW.

Matrix Online is fun for awhile, before its lack of anything to do that isn't missions or PvP hits you. Its got the best PvP system of any MMORPG EVER imho.

Hmmmm. I heard WoW was for the kiddies.

What about Anarchy Online. It's free on CNet, and it's free to play until January, and possibly beyond. Anyone tried that one?

I only ask because I played Neverwinter Nights online today for the first time and decided to stick with the single player campaign. It really sucks that I can't play the level 25 ranger I've been building. It takes for-fricking-EVER to level in that game...
Title: Re: World of Warcraft
Post by: Squinky on Mon 31/10/2005 01:32:22
I played Anarchy Online, (got one of those gree accounts for a year this last january) it wasn't that great really. It was a nice change from the normal medievel game setting though, and really there was nothing wrong with it except its hard to figure out where to go and the game is a little dated.

One thing I really disliked about that game was how weapons worked. You got a cheap weapon for free that didn't take ammo (solor powered) that you could upgrade in the first few levels. Then, you seriously will not find a better weapon for a long, long, time. not even in stores.....

The worst MMORPG I ever saw was Lineage 2.  It was near impossible for me to level up past 9, and I had an "apprentice sword", since it was impossible for me to earn a useful sword (worst..money system...ever...).
Title: Re: World of Warcraft
Post by: Squinky on Mon 31/10/2005 02:11:32
I played that during the Beta, it seemed okay.

Man I have played to many online games, thats really the reason I quit cranking out games....
Title: Re: World of Warcraft
Post by: edmundito on Sun 27/11/2005 16:46:23
The game was on sale and I bought it, so I've started playing it again. I had a 10 day trial back when it was brand-new, and then I played it as much as I could, but then I decided that it was not worth paying $50 for the retail box and then paying more each month, when I could just do the same later and pay less. Like now.

So if anyone's interested, let me know. I'm playing on the American servers, though; since it sucks that you cannot play with European folks. And only on the weekends for a few hours. Very casually.

Hrycan, level 42 Warrior Night Elf. I play with Nabooru, who is a 41 Druid NE and also my girlfriend.

WoW is pretty much the greatest online game ever, and one of the best GAMES I've played.

Facts:
1) You ain't required to roleplay, unless on a RP server.
2) It's not especially expensive.
3) You get ALOT of content for your money.
4) The GM service is a little substandard, though.
5) PvP/RPPvE/RPPvP/PvE realms.
6) Economy is well controlled and enterprise is rewarded.
7) Good feeling of progression.
8) The Burning Crusade expansion pack has been announced <3
9) 40-man RAID dungeons, as in, massive squads running 'instances' (dungeons).
10) Worth it.

Ciao, I gotta get to lessons.

I'll look at Flyff, mind...

I really want to see the new alliance race... but it really seems like they cheaped out with making the bloodelves horde, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
