Hey folks!
Love the forum. Love the games! First time poster!
I searched and couldn't find any info on this having been brought up before.. so, I thought I'd throw it out there.
Is there any talk (or chance) of the AGS engine being ported to XBOX so us XBOXers can play these games? I think it would be a great addition to the XBOX lineup.
I use the Sierra AGI emulator, and the awesome ScummVM(x) emulator to play the old classics... Some new "classics" would be terrific!
Any info. at all would be much appreciated!
Thanks guys!
The Xbox uses Directx like AGS does.. so maybe it's not such an improbable idea, but there'd still be at least some work porting it to work with an xbox controller and probably a lot of technical stuff I don't know about. CJ doesn't have an xbox as far as I know so it's unlikely he'd want or be able to do one. If it's possible and someone offers to port it then maybe it could happen... but it's not likely.
Only port so far has been to linux, and that has had many requests and someone offered to port it, only a few have asked for console ports.
Also, I presume you'd need a chipped console in order to play any AGS games on it anyway, since it probably wouldn't get certified by Microsoft.
While the Xbox is the most similar console to the PC, porting something like AGS would not be a trivial task.
Besides, isn't playing adventure games with a gamepad rather annoying? Give me a mouse and keyboard any day.
Heh, how do you press Space, enter, F4, F5, F7, F9, F12, Tab and tilde with a gamepad? :P And would Micro$oft let people play amatuer games on their console, for free? Hmm....
It may be quite similar to the PC, but I read some game developer's interview where they said that porting from PC to Xbox is actually hellishly difficult...
Doesn't the XBOX have a Keyboard and Mouse peripheral?
That would make it easier to play the games on it, but still, whats the point when you could just turn on a computer and play them there...
My brother has a chipped Xbox and somehow put linux on it. If AGS has a linux port then there ya go, do that.
I think an Xbox Port would be most excellent! I don't have a PC, or know how to use one, so getting AGS games is difficult for me. An XBOX port would:
1. Allow me to download an AGS game on my PC
2. Use various lengths of wire to transfer it to the XBOX
4. Allow me to play the AGS games on my XBOX, since I don't have a PC
But since you don't have a PC, you can't download any AGS games for the XBOX!
YOU'VE SCREWED YOURSELF THERE!!!! ::) :P
That's exactly why I need an XBOX port, see? Because I have no PC! So I can't play AGS games on my PC, but I CAN download them on to my PC to play them on the XBOX, which I DO have!
Do you see the genius in that?
You bitch.
I think it would be somewhat of a novelty to have pixelated graphics coming out of an Xbox, the only advantage would be if you have a large TV screen.
You have a PC, right? Why not just play it on that like the rest of us? Chris would have to get a license to the XBox's documentation/compiler thingus anyway, or something. If he could get the stuff for free, I'd love to get a copy for myself.
He can, not legally but free.

*Re-reads that a few times*
*Thinking.... thinking...*
*Head explodes*
Wait...you have no PC...and therefore you don't know how to use one. Not only does it not makes sense for any forum member to not know how to use a PC, but how are you able to post if you don't know how to use a PC? Are you dictating it to a friend? What's the point? :P
I don't think you understand what I'm saying.
I don't have a PC, so whenever I download AGS games I find myself unable to play them, because I have no PC to play them on. If I had an XBOX I could port the games I'd downloaded from the PC on to the XBOX.
Man. Do you want me to teach you to count to three, too?
But Lili, if you have no computer, what did you make BR on? For that matter, what are you looking at right now?
And there's a number THREE? Wow, and I was impressed when they brought out two...
Plus, how can Lili download them to play them? It's like some wierd riddle...
Actually, playing point and click adventures is a great experience with the Xbox - at least it is with ScummVMx. I've used it to play through Sam and Max, DOTT, The Dig, FoA, Simon the Sorceror, and more. TV has a fudgy way of making the graphics look better, and the analogue sticks on the Xbox controller allow for easy cursor movement.
For the record, I don't believe you need a chipped Xbox to play 'unsigned' applications as there are various software exploits around to trick the Xbox into playing third-party content.
However, the main issue for AGS is a moral one. Most people (if not all) releasing homebrew Xbox software are compiling it using a legally dubious version of the Xbox SDK (XDK). As AGS is closed-source, CJ would have to compile it himself, thus dabbling in dark piratey arts.
Shame really. I'd selfishly love to see a port of the AGS engine on the Xbox...

Then you give up with reprehensible ease. I used to be able to look at, and post on, the ags forums with both my Dreamcast and web TV; as you own an Xbox, which no doubt is equipped with Xbox live, you can blatantly do the same thing. As for Beyond Reality, it's existence is quite clearly a mass hallucination caused by our sitting in front of computers all day, fingers poised above the keyboard, gaining both RSI and radiation poisoning; seperately, these things are merely painful and deadly respectively, but together they create a perceptual acquiescence which you, in your maniacal... mania, saw fit to exploit. You evil fucking bitch.
XBOX Live? How can you have XBOX live without an XBOX? I don't have an XBOX.
I don't know what you are talking about.
My brain is bleeding... :'(
It's got to be due to some sort of overdose. Which particular drug I haven't decided upon yet. Owns no X-Box but asks about an X-Box port of AGS. The assumption by mid-way through the thread is that she would then be able to play AGS games. Now we must believe that she wishes for somebody to create an imaginary port of AGS to use with her imaginary X-Box. Futhermore, she does not own a PC yet uses one extensively, leaving us to conclude that she only has access via school or work. Or, she has one but does not realize it as she's only used it in a state of somnambulism.

In that case, you're totally fucked. Kill yourself now.
Okay, so the XBOX isn't plausible. How about the Gameboy Advance? ::)
Man, if that wasn't totally unfeasable it would be awesome.
I agree. Being able to play AGS games on the Gameboy Advance would rock. But this will probably never happen. Oh well.
And Lili has got me completly confused.
I'm fairly certain that's her purpose in life.

Why is AGS for the GBA so unfeasable? I know there is a (free) GBA Devkit, and guiding the cursor with a d-pad is tricky but not impossible (Broken Sword I has - after all - appeared for GBA, and that works).
I'd buy a GBA if there was AGS for it... :)
Heh I think one problem was that the GBA is having a lower resolution (some 240 x 160 I think) than the lowest possible one AGS uses (320 x 200), so IF there would be an GBA port of AGS which can play AGS game files without much modification, it's inevitable that the screen would be either 1. awkwarded squashed to fit, 2. scrolling like h*ll or 3. always loses some border graphics, so IMO it's more feasible to make a custom engine for the console than porting some existing engines.
But then you can also dream of it on GP32!11!
( ;D heh no, actually I never ownz any handheld game consoles so i don't care)
There's a article one of the people porting Broken Sword to the GBA wrote about the conversion process for graphics and music I think.. it looked really really hard to get it working on a system with such limited memory and sound abilities. There's no way a 256 colour, low res AGS game would run on GBA with the original art and music content even if there was an AGS engine for it.
You'd have to design the games for GBA to make them playable, and personally I found BS on the GBA extremely irritating.

I just lost my faith in mankind.
Edit: on second thoughts, perhaps a Yufster Humour Quiz should be part of the forum registration process... ;)
Don't forget to throw on a Melia-"humor" quiz as well. Maybe a BOYD one would help out a bit also. Oh, and a DG-section and perhaps a Farlander one. Ah, screw it, we're all a bunch of messed up individuals.
Don't lose faith yet, dear programmer. Just hold tight, and you will see true intelligence at play. Of coarse, not from me, but from somebody...
how's this:
a downloadable xbox for the AGS which then can be downloaded to the PS2 for play on the PC?
i know it makes no sense, but its funny.
BG
Maybe Lili has a Mac, not a PC, and maybe the XBox she uses is at a friend's house.
You're definately reading too much into Yufster's psychoses.
Yes, a few people are. Which is why I stopped posting about ten posts ago. Even this post isn't really here.
Or is it? Why don't we debate whether this post exists?
You should really correct that typo in your signature, that game isn't "to secret" for me, is it? Where can I find info about this secret game?
Perhaps we should make our own console, the AGS-Box, and then burn our AGS games on to CDs/DVDs. This way, we can all enjoy our AGS games on a big-screen television.
Is there an electronics specialist out there?
<Spells it out for the stupid people>
SHE WAS MAKING A JOKE ON HOW STUPID IT WOULD BE TO PORT AGS TO THE XBOX AS YOU WOULD NEED A COMPUTER, AND IF YOU HAVE A COMPUTER, WHY NOT PLAY THE GAMES ON IT INSTEAD???
At leat.. That's what I think she meant.
but it isn't stupid at all
people play all sorts of things on all sorts of platforms and for some reason they like how a television blurries up the image and makes it look bad, go figure
eric
/me likes how the TV images look.
For example I consider playing my PCE games on a real console on a real TV a much greater moment than playing them with any computer emulators, no matter how many additional features they have, because they suck and playing them with a computer monitor is never the same thing.
So it may not be that stupid...
However, for AGS games, in my opinion, they're designed for running with computer, and I'm not interested in playing them on TV myself anyway.
