Title: Your idea of Hell
Post by: Ali on Sat 10/05/2003 15:23:18
Hi, I was just wondering what people thought of when they think of Hell.
Hmmm?

EDIT: I don't mean what you really believe hell is like, just how you imagine it might be.

Our current physical life is hell, and being dead is heaven. That's one alternate view, anyway.

My honest opinion is that I don't think it exists. If there is a such a thing as an afterlife, then I like to think we all transcend so much above this crap that we're all pure and happy.

Badly formulated, but that's my theory. :)

I don't believe in hell, ergo I have no idea what hell looks like. And I don't care.

Don't believe in an afterlife myself, but I've been wrong about things before.

I think the only "Good" afterlife I'd have a chance of getting into would be the old viking deal,  Valhalla, because - if I'm remembering this right - all you have to do to go there is to die in combat. Great way to create a warrior race....

Have you ever read dantes inferno? According to him, there's all different parts of hell for different sins. Don't know what happens if you commited more than one sin, maybe a kind of timeshare deal. Dante counts "the sullen" as a group of sinners, which seems a bit harsh.  As an Opportunist, I'm going to be spending eternity in the vestibule of hell, chasing after a flag and getting stung by wasps. Sounds like a game of paintball.

"Waiting for Godot", a play by Samuel Beckett, always seemed like a vision of a hell like existence to me....

Since I have a bit of a hard time deciding what I truly belive in, (I think alot about reincarnation and things like that) I've never really pictured a hell. Well, when I was a kid, it was the obvious pitch-fork and devils, but nowadays I can't say I have an image of it.
If it is a place where your worst nightmare comes true, though, it would be if you were buried alive, and then having alot of synth-driven music playing all the time. (Not a big fan of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, etc...)

If Hell can be defined by our mortal minds, then it is highly unlikely to exist.  So if I believed it existed, it would be foolish of me to relate it with anything my eyes have seen in this world.  HAR, I'm soooo sauve.

I think this is just about everyones image of hell:
First, It would be like a cavern, with spikes coming out of the floor and from the roof.
Then, the fire, lava, cliffs everything that hurts, it's there.
Also, there would be wingless angels flying around and turtoring you (E.I. Hanging,Electric Chair,Rape,Crucifixion,or lack of the before mentioned, incase you are into that kinda crap. (and of course, you couldn't die.
Then watching you while huge pyrotechnics are going off behind him, would be satan, In his throne made of broken bones, old heair, and rotting flesh, laughing at your expence.

Hell is...

Eternal emotional and physical pain. Tartarian torture and black fire which burns flesh. Guilt and agony coupled with sorrow. You see others being tortured but you can't help. Hell is torture, it's torture to you physically and emotionally; you superego wants to help others, but you are bound by burning chains of adamant, weak. Hell is bathing in blood, and watching as your friends are raped/tortured and finally killed. It's not real, but it's real enough for you to feel you are being punished with those images, images of death and war. Hell is feeling eternal empathy and pity, screaming and writhing while your mind slowly turns insane.

jack.keenspace.com <-- this comic deals with hell a lot, but it's very morbid and adults only.

Edit: Oh and if anyone's thinking "Pain's easy I can deal with that" I don't think I'll ever get over reading about musical holes (removed, it's too wrong, I won't post it)<-- WARNING, nudity, sex, blood, violence, the whole shabang!

The bassist in my band plays bagpipes.  It's pretty cool.  We opened a show once with him playing Amazing Grace.  It certainly got the crowd's attention, and it didn't need any amplification, that's for damn sure.

Hell is probably like the ending of Davy Jones C'est Mort.

Take a looksee at my avatar, then imagine a room filled to the brim with the subject of said avatar. Put a spiny rock in the middle of it and chain me to it. Pump in "muzak" over the loud speakers, as well as a healthy mix of several painful musicians (whom I will not name so as to not make angry any fans of them). Mix with a healthy blend of a constantly itchy-yet-unitchable nose, and shake. Then you'll have my hell, as close as I can figure it as of this moment.

Hell is when you die and your soul has an unresolved issue from you life in the physical realm -- and you are trapped with your fears and problems forever.

If you murdered someone, you live with that forever.

If you fear being alone, you stay lonely forever.

If you have regrets, they stay with you.

My view is that the physical world teaches us what we must learn so we can live happily in the afterlife.

Every day is a new lesson.

If you think I should write for calenders and those sappy, inspirational 'little books of', maybe.

But in the end, it doesn't matter -- believe what you like.

Hell would be full of boredom. You see, pain is part of the body, and if you are tortured in hell, you spirit will only 'think' it is being hurt. But boredom, that bores way down to the depths of your inner sanctum and out the other side. Eternity feeling like an eternity. Demons almost falling asleep droaning on and on reading up to the million times table (unless you're an arithmaphile, in which case they'd read from the dictionary). Never being able to switch off, fall asleep, or ignore it, infinitely long textbooks about nothing, speeches which would knock you out cold in three words, and finally... it would all be in black and white.

THAT is hell.

I don't really believe in Hell (or heaven, for that matter) There are many diffrent ways it could be like, if indeed it really exists.

It could either be all that pain and torture crap

Or (and not an all inclusive "or," there are many "or's" I just don't want to write them all out) Hell isn't really ALL that bad. It's kind of like prison. And Satan wouldn't really be that bad of a guy. He's just the guard that makes sure we stay put.

Reincarnation seems like a likely prospect.

After all, from experience we say that life's a bitch. And the worst joke it could pull is to make us suffer through a life, just to do it again....and again.

One's identity passing on to another lifeform is hardly likely.

For what is identity if it is not memory, stream of conciousness, or physical character of one's body?  If it is memory, how does one know he is actually remembering his previous life or seeming to remember?  I would highly dislike for another being to exist which could remember events from my life- if not actually "me".  And if that being IS actually remembering- what if another being were reincarnated from me, and that being also is not seeming to remember but actually remembering.  If A is me and B is me, there seems to be a problem of identity.  For I cannot  equal both A & B. Lifeform A seems to have had my identity up until the point lifeform B was formed- then my identity suddenly vanishes.   Please, someone assure me that if reincarnation or heaven exists- that only one copy of my identity can be made.

Hehehe, can anyone tell I just got done studying philosophy for 3 hours?

Hell exists on earth in the form of air transport. Only the devil could invent such a way for the fastest form of transport available to the public to be made that you have to check in 2 hours in advance of the flight and then the flight is delayed two hours and the airport is two hours from home so your 2 hour flight takes 8 hours...

EvenWolf: If you can prove to yourself that you have a POV somewhere inside your brain (and you can prove it to yourself*, but not really to anyone else), then it's not farfetched to believe that your POV has its own memory, which it doesn't need to access while your physical brain's memory is available. And heaven knows what happens then.

*Sit down and have a good long think about why "you" can see, hear, feel, taste, smell, and know what a random body on Earth sees, hears, feels, tastes, smells, and thinks. It ever so subtly suggests the existence of an actual soul. From there all sorts of possibilities open up to a creative mind, including what happens when a soul no longer has a body to read from.

When I was a kid I made up stories about hell. Everybody loved them because I told them from first person view and I would even pick tiny scratches and scars on my fingers and tie them into the story. In the stories hell was fun.  After them everyone wanted to go to hell. I tried to talk them out of that by trying to make up stories about heaven, but I still couldn't convince them. I guess they would have grown out of that idea now. Yes, I was a one freaky 8-year-old...

How about Hell= no identity?

Not surviving after death.  If God can make one copy of you in Heaven or Hell, why can't he make two? Say he does, which body holds your soul?  Both are identical in every way, even in memory. Do you still exist?

Memorys are just, recollections of past events, they can be altered threw ones own mind, or threw others tampering with your mind, your soul goes deeper then just thoughts, its  like your essence, there are many different intermpretations of what a soul is,  but, i belive it is what defines, if you are good or evil (it not that black and white) it is like karma, its the one thing whats with you always. There are things far worse than having no identity, physicly, and mentaly.  :(

Ah, but you write into contradiction... you say a soul is NOT identity, therefore my soul can go on and my identity can die.

But why do I care if a soul exists if it is no longer mine?  What do I care if a clone of me exists in Heaven because I was good on Earth? I deserve to be in Heaven- not he. What do I care if only a clone of me suffers the pain of Hell?  I won't have to feel the torment, he will- and he deserves it for claiming my soul.

You die, and you wind up in a rappidly spinning amusement park ride. You're extremely nausious, you have a splitting headache, your have terrible stomach pain. Around you are lots of people laughing at your pain, in high shrieking voices. You feel extremely bad. Then, somebody shouts at you from above, stating that you're in hell, and asks you if you think you belong there.

Anyone who answers "yes", gets to go to heaven.

TEH NO!!1!!

Well, that might be what sam and max hell looks like. Nobody can tell, with any degree of confidence - since lucasarts adventure game characters don't die. I wouldn't be surprised if the real secret of monkey island is actually how Stan manages to make a living selling used coffins and life insurance.

But, back to my original point, which you so deviously tried to steer your own corrupt consciousness away from - no doubt because you're a serial killer who will one day end up there: People who think they're not evil, are the only people who deserve to be in hell. Everybody makes mistakes, after all. So hell, to me, would be a place where people think they positively have to be in heaven, and everybody else with them - simply because they wound up there. And lo, it would be a truly sucky place to be.
