Your Internet Connection

Well, i did a search, and pretty sure this was never asked before. But I am wondering what all my fellow AGS members use for an internet connection.

I just switched from dial-up to DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), and holy crap, what a difference.

dial-up seems so, one milliion year's ago.

Back home (in my parent's house) we have 64k ISDN.

But here (in my university apartment) I have a 1mbps connection. Which means I can download at about 800kb/s if the server is good. Usually it's in the 100-150kb/s range, though. Still a whole lot better than the 6kb/s at home.

Broadband, but its slow as hell, cuts out often, extreamly expensive, and the company workers are all assholes... But its fast...

I have cable, but I'm in Hawaii and I have a firewall so sometimes it's really slow. On the internet, I get about 350kb/sec. On P2P programs, I get crap. Average is about 40kb/sec. MP3s are the only thing that go fast, but those are illegal.

I've got cable, don't know the exact specific speed but it seems to be a lot faster lately, back to what it was like when I originally got it in 2000.

eg. on some fast downloads I get over 600KB/sec (that's "kilo bytes" not "kilo bits") ie. less than 2secs to download 1 Megabyte.

I can't see why I'd need anything faster, but in 10 years, we'll see.

I'm limited to 3gig transfer a month, but the last 3 months they've given us 6gigs for no extra cost, and apparently from March we get 12gig a month for no extra cost as the normal rate. if you go over the limit it cuts you back to 28.8kb for the rest of the month.

I don't think it's easy to go over 12gigs unless you download full movies and mp3's regularly. but when you get extra bandwidth I guess you find new ways to use it.

You guys are just jealous of my 56k connection. Thought about going ADSL, but I don't quite fancy being locked into a contract.

I just found out that our ADSL supplier added over 60% to our monthly bandwidth without telling us.

I have a Time Warner "Road Runner" connection. Which basically means cable. I think Time Warner has a monopoly here because DSL isn't available. I also use a wireless router with my laptop so that caps off my connection- but it is very decent overall.

And 56k, ooh, the glory days... Heh, now i'm still not too far, 64k ISDN, 7.5-sometimes goes to 10 kb/s, tho i can use both of the lines, which is ofcourse, 2x expensive. Broadband/cable net just came to my country and its pretty cheap. DSL has been here for a while, but i think it's a bit expensive.
And yeah, i wanted to say that i think some of you folks mess the kilo bits and bytes as Timosity said.
When you say 1 mbps it's usually bits.
Can someone make a chart of connections?

Even, your wireless router won't cap anything off. That is, unless it's unusually shitty. A 10 Mbps wireless connection (standard low-end) is more than enough bandwidth for DSL or Cable. It goes double when you're dealing with Roadrunner's crappy service (unless they've improved since I used 'em).

I have a dial-up, because I'd have ADSL but the fucking phone lines in our street aren't right. AND ONLY THE STREET WHERE I LIVE. Everywhere else in my neighbourhood are the right phone lines. Now we like have to get the "right" connection with some air connection, or smth. Dunno exactly

Like Remo I'm connected to my school's (university college) connection. Not through LAN mind you, no, a glorious radio link which is slow, prone to turn itself off when it's cold and if possible, even slower when there's fog.

I can get 450KB/sec on good days though, when noone else who share the connection is around to cripple it. Seeing as there's a lot of computer illiterates here I usually get 150KB/sec though, more in the daytime since we had to close down all p2p ports because of kazaa users who couldn't figure out how to turn it off.

I have a one megabit-per-second connection from my dorm too. Most bigger universities have 1 mbps taps.

Just like everyone else, it's rare for me to get more than 150 kbps.

I lived with dial-up for 5 years though. I hate it like the devil.

I have dial-up. I tried to get DSL, and I'm three miles out of range (three miles, thats the end of my road... WTF?

). I think it's the same situation for me with broadband.

I'm contemplating getting a T1.

I look back on the 56k days like I look back on EGA graphics.

I remember how awesome the 56k modem was when I went from my 14.4 to 28.8, skipped the 33.6 and jumped into the glorious 56k!!

I remember how much faster I could play Quake online. My brother was living in Florida at the time and we used to meet up on empty servers and just chat. It was our 'cheap long-distance' solution at that time!

Now I have a cable modem that downloads about 300k/sec on average. It's pretty nice.

But I remember my internet connection roots fondly.
