Leasure Suit Larry 2 - Stuck in quicksand

Can someone please help me.  I'm stuck in the quicksand.  I've tried everything and still die as soon as I take a few steps.  I've read the hint about following the monkey, but the monkey starts at a rock half way into the screen and I can't get there.  I've tried staying on the dark red areas, but I still die.

Can someone please help me out?

Walk carefully.  Always click only a few step ahead following the "trail".

No go!  No mater where I walk I die.  Also, I can't seem to see a "trail".  Is it the dark red area?  If you like, I can send you a picture of what my screen looks like.

I've finished the game some time ago so I can't remember what exactly the "trail" looks like, but the color is different from other part of the quicksand and lead to the lower right corner,

Absolutely. In the EGA version, the trail is clearly a different color. I don't know about VGA. IIRC, it goes counterclockwise, a bit southeast from the start. If necessary, take a step then save, rinse and repeat.
