"Quest for Glory 2" VGA version not working in Windows 10

I haven't played this game in a while and now I suddenly find myself unable to run it. I like this game so much, losing access is not an option for me. I have read that there are solutions, but none of them works.
  • One I thought about myself was Windows compatibility mode. Effect: as always, that is, it didn't work. I have never seen compatibility mode actually work.
  • The game is supposed to be supported by Scumm VM since version 2.5, I have version 2.8.1. However, when I select the game folder, I get the message: "Scumm VM didn't find any game in the specified directory!". (The exclamation mark annoys me most, as if it was supposed to be something cheerful...) I have no idea what I could be doing wrong.
  • Supposedly it can work with the following roundabout: download AGS, take the file acwin.exe, put it in the game folder and use it instead of the proper game executable. It didn't work. First I got the message: "Executing code cannot be continued, because SDL2.dll object was not found. Reinstalling the program could solve this issue". I downloaded the SDL2.dll file and placed it in the game folder too and now I get another error message: "Application was not properly launched (0xc000007b). Click OK to abort the application".
I never even wanted to use Windows 10. I resisted it for long, I gave up because otherwise my new printer coudln't even be detected and installed. And now I find myself with free time (my period just started, so I can't cycle within the next three days) and no possibility to play a game I really love...
I'm no specialist in technical issues, so it may be that there's a simple trick to make any of these methods actually work... but I can't have an idea what it might be. I could really use some help.
P.S. I don't have Virtual Box installed currently. I should, but I can't set it up by myself, and my cousin who knows technical stuff never found time for that (I wanted to play Sierra's "Take a Break! Pinball", and even on Windows XP the game runs, but paddle controls don't work, it requires an even older version)... and the the switch to Windows 10 came and, for a time, I gave up Virtual Box to save space on the (borrowed, by the way) external disk used for moving my files... Of course I could install Virtual Box right now, but I'm afraid that I might be unable to set up a working virtual Windows 7 by myself.

You can take SDL2.dll from the same AGS package, it should be there along with acwin.exe.
If you download it from SDL2 webpage, then it must match the acwin.exe's bitness, meaning it has to be a 32-bit dll (may also have "x86" in the archive name).

Can't say anything about ScummVM, not an expert in how it works or which AGS games supports.

I replaced the file with that version and I get another error message. :( What could be wrong?!
"ERROR: Unable to determine game data.
Engine was not able to find any compatible game data.
Searched in: [folder path]"

Crimson Wizard

Erm... which files do you have there in that folder exactly?

Can you make a screenshot of the folder contents?

EDIT: also, just in case, what version of AGS have you downloaded? For instance, AGS 4.0 does no longer support old games.

The one on the AGS website, why would I know where to find more? :( It says 3.6.1 - Patch 9 (zip).

From the look if it, the game's exe "Qfg2vga.exe" has size 0 bytes. Also, in the version that I have on my computer there are Qfg2vga.010 and Qfg2vga.011 which are not present in your folder.

I suggest the game got corrupted somehow. Perhaps try reinstalling it?

Nowhere Girl

Thanks a lot for the help. I didn't notice these problems. And the game does actually run in Windows 10 as well, it was corrupted, not incompatible...
Sorry. I'm a computer user who just isn't a technical expert.
