I'm stuck in this game near the end...
at a certain point, the sheriff's men are chasing me through the forest (around day 7 or so). I can evade them

by using the hand code to get help from the Druid trees.
now a couple days later (after ambushing the treasure train) they are chasing me again... I've googled a walkthrough and it says I should do the exact same thing again...
however the instant i walk onto any forest screen, I am caught and killed.
What is this, a bug? Or am I missing something?
Been a long time since I played the game, but I think I remember this as a problem.
Can you use the map to warp directly into a druidic grove, then immediately start entering the hand code? Or is the map inaccessible at this point?
It's possible that this is one of those timer bugs that plague many old Sierra games on fast computers. There's a patch (http://geocities.com/belzorash/) that might fix it. Otherwise, it's worth trying it under DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/) if you're not already.

The map is accessible, and I can safely reach the Widow's house, the lookout (but nobody's coming) and the Willow Grove. I'll try the rest of the map, thanks. I'd hate having to replay from the beginning :(
16-bit d00d -> certainly; go to www.fbi.gov and tell them you're a software pirate. That should help.
Does the willow grove or the old oak tree not count as druidic groves? I'm not sure, but I think I used to go to the old oak tree to transform.
Willow grove, no. Oak tree, maybe but I got caught instantly upon entering that screen.
I've replayed it from an earlier saved game (excellent game by the way, if a bit easy). As far as I can tell, what happens is there's a certain time limit (or a number of rooms you can cross maybe) during the chase before you get caught. The point is that the limit for both chases is the SAME, so if you take too long in the first chase (which I had) you won't get any time in the second. Ouch.
