Lost In Nightmare

I've been playing Lost In Nightmare and I have found this bug (possibly) in the game.  When I have to steal the keys from Yalcin Sandal's house, I know I've to use the music box to distract him (this is obvious) but strangely, when I open the inventory, I can't look or operate on the music box. If I click on the window, we get a message he is still there. If I go towards the door, he says that he won't knock on it. So is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Do I have to apply the patch to get myself out of this? I'm not sure which version I actually have (don't know how to check...). I'm really REALLY scared of losing all my saved games by applying the patch  , please tell me a procedure to safely port all my save games to the next version by applying the patch if it is necessary.

Well, I installed the patch and everything and I still can't use the inventory.  Kind of a let down that I spent the entire afternoon (literally) playing this game and now I can't get to the end
