How do I get past the zombies in the street?

If you don't have the shotgun yet, you can use the baseball bat (it's in your room), but you need to be close to them.

Okay, when I try to use the bat on them in the attack mode, nothing happens. I must be missing a step. Also how do I get into the buildings like the bar?
I can get back into the door to my building but when I walk into the others I don't go in. Help please
You use the pick button to open the doors and when you use the attack button you click the bat or shotgun and then you can use it.
Wow, killing me a lot of zombies. Can you also give me a hint where I might find a container to get the gas?
