I can answer my own question here; simply shoot him many, many times and keep yourself alive - which applies to just about any monster in adventure gaming. It took me 5 playthroughs to realize what I needed to survive chapter 3, and you've got to go back to the chapter start every time to re-equip because once you enter the mansion you are on your own. There's no ducking out to pick up items. Aldys is your best friend here, and you will make her very rich indeed.
