No, but it the most convenient way of getting off the ship. Or should be.

Click the hand on it. For some reason this doesn't work in all rooms, that is likely a bug.

regarding the cat fur

what rooms does it work in??  I am fairly confident that I have tried in every room.. in two rooms there is no effect .. clicking the hand does nothing, and in the rest I just get a 'he is too quick for you, why would you want to do it anyways'  I figured there was a change in the game and maybe you had to get cat fur from somewhere else.

I am flummoxed.. any help here would be great

Make sure the wizard's wand is in the cupboard. In the original game, he'd specifically say that he'd kill you since his wand is missing; in the remake he just has a generic killing message.

I think you can just delete the savegames in the game directory (or better copy them to another directory in case you want to use them again ...)

my problem:
Where the hell is that stupid wand??? I thought it was with manannan when he was sleeping (that's how it was in KQ5, wasn't it?) but it is not ... I have all ingredients for the understanding the animal language and some other spell and now I only need that wand, I guess ...

ThanksÃ,  :)

edit: nevermind, I got it ..
and now I have almost every spell except for the teleportation and am wondering when Manannan will wake up and be hungry ...Ã,  ::)
but if I do wake him up and wonder around a bit he sometimes appears and kills me, although I am not carrying anything red or even blue, seems like a dead end of some sort .. did anyone else experience this?

And how do I get him to be hungry again?
(When I go to town and stay too long he also kills me, but when I'm in the house he just won't wake up)

As to the save games I had the same problem - the only way I could sort this was to save over exisiting saves - a bit of a confusion though as it didn't allow me to change name of saved game  :-\

Mr. Mozzarella ............You have to be patient, I had to wait ages, maybe 5/10minutes for him to wake up or get hungry, are you still carrying the wand?  As you have to put that back otherwise he will kill you.

the feather is needed for the language spell, isn't it? I am not sure (didn't pplay the original) but it could be that you can survive without having it ... only you will then miss some nice conversations ... but you could have got it from an animal that has feathers (and there were some around your house ;) )

yes, I finally made it out of the sea (somehow my problems always solve themselves the minute after I post them)
for everyone else encountering the swimming problem I described above:
Spoiler
The stone teleports you RANDOMLY, so try until you "randomly" are teleported to the beach in the same screen that has the ship and shark in it. at least it worked for me - I had the walk cycle then again
[close]

and against all my good intentions I just finished the game ... but I will play again, when the voice pack is out, of course. I also just got about 190 points, and I still don't know what to do with the shovel, the fly wings, the sleeping spell ... (and probably some other things as well ...) so I just have to try a bit, I guess

I was a bit disappointed the game was so short, but I guess that all these early games weren't much longer. Unfortunately I never played the originals, but AGDIs KQ1 was not very long either. The oldest original KQ I played was number 5 and this was already a bit longer ...

so, apart from the non-walkable-area bugs and some other things I enjoyed it :) (what about opening a thread just for funny screenshots from this game? ;) after all, we won't see them anymore should a new version be released)
It's always a bit sad to see how fast you can play through a game that took months and years to be made ...

well, I think I had to wait for about 10 or 15 minutes ... maybe you first have to complete other actions on the ship ... have you got your possessions back and did you look into every room? (I think there are two or three rooms that you really can't do anything in, but you can have a look...)
Edit: And I think you have to wait in the cargo.

it is not on the ground (but I also thought that at first and touched every stone on every screen ...) someone will give it to you ... ever wondered what is inside the cave with the web?

about the journey: I don't know whether there's a rule about how long Mannannan stays away, but in my case it took 20 or 30 minutes I think. It would make sense to have a rule here, because then you could look at your timer and try to be back before Manannan returns from a journey. The good thing is that you don't even have to wait in front of the computer, as you will hear when he returnsÃ,  ;)
I also have no idea, how many times Manannan goes on a Journey. For me there were only two Journeys, and one sleep in between, but after a sleep he isn't hungry so I was waiting quite some time until he was hungry again ..

I also had something buggy with the second journey. He returned, asked for food, I went to the kitchen, he was sitting there. Then he disappeared from the table and reappeared at the left screen exit, again asking for food. He disappeared and didn't appear at the table. Only when I left the room and returned, he was sitting there again (luckily ...) So don't be surprised if that happens.

The brazier is right there in the lab. However, you must make the storm spell last - it requires an empty jar that (because of a bug) is only generated by another spell.

Where's the stone? I assume it's just on the ground on some screen. What screen is it on? It's for the teleport spell.
The oracle (who lives behind the spiderweb) gives it to you. You don't need it to finish the game.

I also have no idea, how many times Manannan goes on a Journey. For me there were only two Journeys, and one sleep in between, but after a sleep he isn't hungry so I was waiting quite some time until he was hungry again ..
He should journey as many times as you need him to, but eventually you will run out of food and he'll get angry and do one of his punishments, and if you get too many of those, you die.

Oh and the shovel is for treasure digging, which near as I can tell is a pixel hunt (after you've been told where the treasure is, of course).

How many times am I suppose to wait until I hear someone shouting?

20 minutes or 30 mintues?

The time is 1:38 when I last played the game.

well, I think I had to wait for about 10 or 15 minutes ... maybe you first have to complete other actions on the ship ... have you got your possessions back and did you look into every room? (I think there are two or three rooms that you really can't do anything in, but you can have a look...)
Edit: And I think you have to wait in the cargo.

This is sure a big minus for this great game. I don't have time to wait to do something. They really had to torture us with those times bullshit.

Give it up guys it is 2006 so when you are going to fix this remove that time please. It is just a waste of time having that crap in the game. >:(

I believe the treasure is still 5 paces east of the palm tree. At least, I found it without much trouble.

The funny part is that you can dig multiple times in the same spot and get a treasure chest each time ;)

how do i now take out only certain items, like the fruit which i want to give to manannan?
Title: Re: King's Quest 3
Post by: on Tue 27/06/2006 02:16:48
You can't do that. :-\ When you search under your bed after you have stored all of your magic and unmagic stuff  and you want to take one item back and store it in your inventory, you will then take all of the items you have gained and it will be back into your inventory. I know that is a bummer.

BTW I never gave Mannanan a real food like fruit or bread because I was so quick to gain every stuff to make the "poisoned supper" for him. But because of that I had to waste my real time to wait in 30 minutes in the pirate's ship so someone of the  pirates could yell out: "Land ho!" ::)

Yes, you have to store your things with the blue arrow, not with the hand (I think if you have nothing under your bed and click the hand on it you store everything, also non magical things there, atleast this happened for me once).

not completely. There is a small waterfall in Llewdor (near the swamp) and when you look at it, it says something like "This is the mountain you are living on" ... that confused me at first, (because this was also the path where you fall down quite at the beginning) because you could not see the waterfall in the screen with the path ..
but anyway, it's not your fault that I had this association ;) had I not looked at that waterfall and had not read the message, I would not have been confused

well, I didn't walk up that path (which is probably one reason why I got so few points) but I clicked on my map .. for some reason, it was highlighted .. and I ended up at the platform that you also know from KQ1 ... and I saw the cave and thought of the path there, but I didn't know you could walk it up ...
If this is a thing used in the original versions of KQ1 and 3, Roberta was a bit repetitive ??? ...

so, just try the map .. good luck  :)

Title: Re: King's Quest 3+
Post by: fluxmaster on Fri 28/07/2006 15:57:54
This is a question about the KQ3+ game that came out a couple of years ago, not IA's KQ3VGA.

After playing IA's KQ3VGA, I went back and played KQ3+. Ã, I especially liked the expanded cutscene in KQ3VGA where Alexander enters the oracle cave, so I went to the same spot in KQ3+ and tried to enter the oracle cave. Ã, When I dipped the eagle's feather in the rose essence, Alexander turns into an eagle, but he does not attack the spider. Ã, After turning back into a human, I get the message, "Unfortunately, even an eagle is no match for a spider this size." Ã, This only works with the beta-6 version.

Is it possible to defeat the spider in the beta-6 version? Ã, Is there another way to defeat the spider? Ã, Is the cutscene for the oracle cave working in any of the beta versions? Ã, If I know the room number for the inside of the oracle cave, can I teleport to the inside of the cave and see the cutscene without defeating the spider? Ã, (This actually works with one of the early versions of KQ3.) Ã, Does anyone know the room number for the inside of the oracle cave in KQ3+?

EDIT:  By trial and error, I determined that the inside of the oracle cave is room number 39.  However, when I teleport to the oracle cave in KQ3+ and try to talk to the oracle, I get the message "The Oracle appears to be in a deep state of meditation.  You are not heard."  However, there is an object in the oracle cave that I can take (not the amber stone).

In the early part of the game, you talk to the oracle in Mannanan's bedroom, so perhaps there is no need to talk to the oracle in the cave.

spoiler is [ h i d e ] without the spaces inbetween, and [ / h i d e ] at the end of the spoiler, again without the spaces. And about the ship: Unfortunately, you have to wait for hours, but when you are close to the shore, you only have seconds to react. Save every 30 minutes and do something else during the waiting time. And when you missed the moment of landing (I waited for about two hours), go back to the last save and stare on the monitor and wait  until somebody shouts "land hoo". Also in the original game, the travel on the ship took a long time,  only that you could accelerate the timers (game speed). And I also missed the function of the map on the ocean which indicated in Sierras game when you were close to the shore.

if you still didn't find the way out: if you are at the top left cave entrance, enter it and you will find yourself on the top right entrance. Use the walk icon to climb the rocky wall and go left and then down to the entrance in the middle. You should end up a bit right of the entrance. And save very often, Gwydion is not a good mountain climber. The entrance in the middle leads to the lower left entrance. I have everything I need except the stone. I have the wand. When I go down into the dungeon and try to cut the cactus, it says "No"; if I use the cactus on the knife, it says "You can't do that yet."

Do I have to collect all of the ingredients before I can prepare the spells, or do I have to wait for Manannan to be doing something in particular? At the moment, he is sleeping.

I've found out how to do this. To answer my own question, in case it helps anyone else:

Spoiler

Once you have all the ingredients for a spell, you need only make sure they are in your inventory (and not under the bed) and then click on the spell in the book with the "CAST" cursor. You don't actually need to carry out the actions described in the spell.

Yes, I've got everything except for one item for one spell, and I'm not trying to cast that one. Perhaps I need to be carrying just the items I need for the particular spell I am casting - is that the case? I'm going to try that.

No, you shouldn't need to do that. Have you gotten the second release of the game (that is, the bugfixed version that was released with the voicepack?) Also, which spell are you trying to cast, and what inventory items do you have just before you cast that spell?

Thanks for looking into this, Fizzii.

So, I have:

Spoiler

From kitchen: bowl, knife, fruit, meat (I ate the bread for some reason);
Items for spell: cat fur, dog fur, snake skin, fish powder, thimble of dew, feather, fly's wings, salt, rose-petal essence, mistletoe, nightshade juice, acorns, pouch, mandrake root powder, fishy-smelling stuff in jar, porridge, cup of ocean water, spoon of swamp mud, toadstool powder, saffron, toad spittle, lard, piece of cactus.
Also: key, wand, mirror, four gold coins, magic map.

In short, everything needed for the spells except for the stone.
[close]

At the moment, Manannan is sleeping.

Spoiler

I go down to the dungeon and interact at the book. I have all the above items with me. For example, if I click "cast" on the "understanding the language of animals" spell, for which I need the feather, bowl, dog fur, snake skin, fish bone. Gwydion says "Oh no!" and grows huge ears and his head turns to blood. "You're all ears now, Gwydion!" says the game, and that's the end.

The game executable is timestampted 20 August 2006. I downloaded it this week or last week, and there is a music.vox file in the directory. There doesn't seem to be a voice pack though as I don't hear text spoken.

paolo - You cast the spell by looking at the spellbook in the lab, then clicking cast on the spell you want, and whether you have the right components or not, you will either get the spell or die. You can't actually manually combine ingredients like in kq6, which I think was a pity, but other people like it like this.

I've got to be honest, I'm findingÃ,  this game incredibly frustrating.

Spoiler
I've been killed like seven times and I just started the game. I can't do anything without the Wizard zapping me. He says I've discovered the secrets of the old magics, but that was never even explained. The generic kill message says I shouldn't let him know what I'm up to, but I fail to see how walking around in the yard should get me killed. As far as I can tell, there's nothing telling me what I should do next. Is the whole game like this? Is it even playable if you don't know the original?

Have you got any inventory items that could be used for magic, or taken anything that belongs to the wizard? eg, fly wings, cat fur, or anything else denoted by a red hotspot in the inventory? If you do and he catches you with them, you will die.

Basic aim so far is to try and create as many spells as you can in order to be free from Manannan. The game is playable, but probably trickier if you haven't played the original as there aren't too many hints and a lot of the game is exploring and picking up stuff.

Ivy,

You need to read the manual (Manual.pdf in the game installation). This explains that you get killed if you have magic items on you, how to identify magic items in your inventory, and how to hide them from the wizard.

I know, I kept getting killed for exactly the same reason and couldn't work out why. It was very annoying, but things become a lot clearer once I'd read the manual.

I think this game really should suggest that you read the manual if you answer "no" to the question "Have you played this game before?" that comes up at the start, or say somewhere else in big letters "IMPORTANT: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE STARTING TO PLAY THIS GAME" (like above the download link or something).
Title: Re: King's Quest 3

Ivy,

To get into the house, use the hand icon on the front door. No doubt you know that already - if you mean you get killed before you can even reach the front door, then you'll just have to use an earlier saved game or start again, and then do what I suggest in my post above. Sorry.

Spoiler

I tried to cast the teleportation spell. I got killed because I didn't have a spoon. The spoon had swamp mud in it for the storm spell, and after I'd cast that I didn't have a spoon any more.

Does that mean you have to cast the teleportation spell before you collect the swamp mud? I hope not, because I'll have to go back a long way to get back to before I picked up the mud.

Does that also mean that you should only cast spells as and when you need them, rather than just casting them all in one go?

Or perhaps I don't have the right stone. I have the amber stone that the oracle gave me. Is that not the right one?

I had a spoon with mud in it and used it to cast the storm spell. I then went to cast the teleportation spell, which I wasn't able to cast earlier because I didn't have the stone, but the spoon was no longer in my inventory.

Presumably I need to cast the teleportation spell first, which uses the spoon for salt and then, I would imagine, leaves it free for collecting swamp mud for the storm spell.

As it stands, it looks like I'm going to have to go back to a very old save game before I collected the swamp mud, losing 100+ points and a several hours of gameplay, or even start all over again as I have reused many of the save slots.  :( If I have to do that, at least I'll know what I need to do this time round and hopefully it won't take me too long to get back to where I am now.
[close]

I hope this is a bug rather than deliberate. If it is deliberate, it makes this game extremely unfair, in that an action you take early on can lead you to an unavoidable dead end much further down the line. I don't know if the Sierra games worked that way, and I appreciate that this is a remake of a Sierra game, but isn't there an unwritten principle that games made with AGS should be fair to the player?

It might be a bug... it is a bit strange that you lose the spoon after casting the storm spell even though it was just the mud that was used. Maybe try asking at IA to confirm (http://www.infamous-adventures.com/forum)

Though you can play the game without casting that spell (on the other hand, you miss out on a cool ending if you don't get full points)

Athirwen - don't follow the path to the left side of the rock. When you're at the bottom of the rock (on the lower part of the path), just try walking upwards onto the rock, and Gwydion should climb up.

Thanks, Fizzii. I've posted a message to Infamous Adventures... let's see what they say.

Spoiler

I'll go back to before I cast the storm spell and see if I can cast the teleportation spell even though the spoon has swamp mud in it. If not, I'm going to have to go back to near the beginning of the game or start again.

Spoiler

I went back to before I had cast the storm spell, and continued from there. Despite there being mud in the spoon, I managed to cast the teleportation spell successfully, and I still had the spoon of swamp mud. I could then cast the storm spell without any problems.

Looks like I did find a bug, then.

I got a reply from the IA boards:

"I might be wrong but i dont remember that the teleport spell required the spoon. Though is [sic] says one spoonful of salt, all you need is the salt, the mistletoe, the amber rock and the wand.

"Try it out."

Well, it didn't work for me. Maybe I was doing something else wrong.

Anyway I'm now

puzzling out how to get on to the pirate ship.

Maybe. I just played through the spells, and even though you do lose the spoon when casting the storm spell (which is a bit unrealistic, granted), I could still cast the teleportation spell without any problem despite not having a spoon.

Spoiler

I'm trying to get off the pirate ship. I have my things back and they've dropped anchor. I've tried the various things mentioned above but they don't seem to work:

* Teleport - just gets you into trouble because you can end up with the cook, and there's no escape from him.
* Jumping overboard - I take it this means from the stern of the ship, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere else. Well, the shark is still there, and if I click on the water, it says that it's unsafe. I tried feeding the shark, but that didn't do anything.
* Looking at the map - I can see the beach, but don't seem to be able to get to it using the map.

If you hang around for too long, the ship sets sail again and you're doomed to being a cabin boy for ever.

So how *do* I get off the ship?

as soon as you hear "land hoo", use the sleeping powder. Remember, it must be a dank place, so wait in the storage room. You also have to overhear the conversation of the mice about the treasure. The sea travel is a bit lengthy and you can miss important things just by bad luck. I had to wait for hours and repeat until it worked out for me (I played KQ3 from Sierra before, so I knew about the important bits)

Thanks, sthomannch, but that didn't quite work.

Spoiler

I'd heard "land ho!" (and "weigh the anchor", for that matter) and heard what the mice said about the treasure. I then used the sleeping powder and everyone went to sleep.

Using the stone just teleported me around the ship, even when I was on the stern. After a few teleports, the ship set sail again, even though everyone was supposed to be asleep! I thought the sleep was supposed to be eternal?

the sleep should be terminal. Only the pirate in the crows nest stays awake, but all other pirates should be asleep. I actually swam to the shore in the remake. Something seems to be really wrong there.

OK, I've got it.

Spoiler

You have to jump overboard from the top deck of the ship by going to where you see the hole in the deck and then jumping off the far edge of the ship. You can't jump off the stern.

I'm stuck on the wooden walkway now. I'm near the end of it (towards the top of the screen) but it looks like there might be a gap in it, which I keep falling down. Of course, it's too dark to see clearly. I can't teleport my way out either.

Hm, no, there was no gap after all, but where I am now I can't even see where I am walking (behind the blue stalagmites at the top left). I'm now saving after every successful step I take.

Is there an easier way to get to the end of the walkway?

the cave behind the mountains, after you fell down the ledge? I can't remember that I used a torch, but I also saved a lot when searching for the way up. The old EGA game is more forgiving and allows to use the right key on the keyboard to safely walk up the stairs. For the remake: Good luck...

It's the wooden walkway inside the cave in the mountains. When get near the back, there is a section that goes behind some stalagmites so you can't see where you are walking.

But for now I'm

trying to get into the castle. I would have thought I could transform into a fly and get in that way, but that doesn't work. Teleporting doesn't either.

Phew, I made it through in the end.

Spoiler

Once you are behind the stalagmites at the top left, you need to move westwards pretty much, until you go off the end of the screen, where you will end up on a fairly straight section along the top of the screen. There are two more screens after that, but the first screen is the hardest.

Turning the brightness on my monitor up to maximum also helped a little ;)

Hurray! I've finished it. 188 out of 210 - not bad.

Two questions regarding the same topic- the fly spell.  I made it once successfully because I earned points and did not die, but I was unable to use it at the tavern. Why not?

Second- I am trying to make it again with the eagle feather but I keep dying because I don't have all the ingrediants (so it tells me.)  The saffron was deleted from my inventory automatically after making this spell the first time, and when I try to pick it up again, it says I already have some.  But I don't!

First question: I don't know. But you don't need it here.

Second question: Once you made the spell, you can use the eagle feather as well as the fly wings. You can't create this spell a second time.
