Hi all,
I'm running Night of the Hermit (320x200 Windows version 1.2) and every time I use the fishing pole + magnet on the bush outside the bar window the game crashes after showing the animation.
I would ordinarily check out the designer's site for help but I'm currently living in the glorious People's Republic of China where, along with news.bbc.co.uk, anything ending in .gov and blogspot, Geocities is considered a threat to national security and so blocked.
So I'm posting here instead, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix the bug? Failing that does any kind soul have a save game made after getting the weight that they'd be willing to send me?

Disable sound (for safety, disable both music and voice) via the setup, play past that part, save, you can reenable sound after that.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I can't seem to disable the sound and music in the Windows setup. I ran the DOS setup and after finally managing to get the game working in DOS found that I couldn't run it in 320x200, so I can't restore the old game. Is there any way to disable the sound in the Windows version that I'm missing?
You cant disable sound in win setup?
Try using the keyboard arrow keys.
As far as I remember there're some problems with the dropdown menus in old versions of winsetup, but I forgot what.

Thanks again for the help. I've now managed to disable sound (though strangely not music, I've even tried manually editing acsetup.cfg without success) but the game still crashes. :'(
Is there any way to get the game running in DOS in 320x200? Failing that... well, I really haven't a clue what else I can try.
Hmmm did setting the parameters to 0 in acsetup.cfg work?
Actually it CAN be played in DOS at 320x200, the problem depends on your windows version and graphics card driver combinations (I use pure DOS, so it's never a problem to me), try updating drivers and directx, but if it didn't work before, there's actually little luck for it to work with the updates.

I set both the digiwin and midiwin parameters to 0 (along with digiid and midiid just to be safe) and though the sound is disabled as far as I can tell (no speech, no sounds) the midi still plays and the game still crashes.
Regarding DOS in 320x200, I'd guessed as much, and the fact that I'm using a laptop doesn't make life much easier. The Toshiba website doesn't seem to offer anything useful so I guess I'm forced to go back to begging for saves.
So, anyone have a 320x200 save after getting the weight from the bush?
well, not really a fix but more of a go around. this gets you passed the point where it crashes at the end of the magnet fishing cutscene:
step 1: open up "acsetup.cfg" (i used notepad)
step 2: set all sound options to=0
step 3: run "RunDos.bat"
step 4: play the game till you pass the point where it used to crash then save
step 5: you're done. Run "RunWin.bat" if ya like you should now be able to finish the game.
Oh, and one other thing. Found another bug where you cant pick up the "something" off the floor of the kitchen. Dunno if itll happen to anybody else but just save and restart the game. You should be able to do so then.

Sorry for reviving this thread but I also encountered this problem. The walkaround slpooge gave us did not help me. I can't run "RunDOS.bat" because I have a Windows XP. Any other walkaround?
