How do I get Night of the Hermit Talkie to work? When i downloaded it it just was a large file called sound.vox or something like that. How do I install it?
It's only the sound file pak, you need the game itself to play it. If you can get one single file with the sound pak, there're probably 2 separate downloads at the place you got it from, just have a look, and see if there're another download for the game, download that also, then together with the .vox file in the same folder the game should work.
Hmmm... I had already downloaded the full game, but it had no voices. So i downloaded the talkie vile and put it into the full game folder. It still doesn't work.
Hmmm, how it didn't work? It crashed or didn't start up at all?

I'm getting a similiar problem with this game. I tried downloading it from the AGS website. It downloads ok but when I try to open the file it says"
Error, could not load this file. You must create and save a game first in room editor before you can use this engine. What does this mean? :P
Which file did you click on to run?
I just used the hermit application to run the game. The problem is that the game runs fine but I cannot hear any voices at all.

Which file did you click on to run?
I clicked on the Icon that says AGS (Adventure Game Studio run time...) I thought this ran the game. (the application) Just in case, the other files included with this are MS-DOS batch files and I think they are just part of the neccessary files needed to run the game. I also read the Readme text documnet but it was not much help.
What are the other files' names?
If there's a DOS executable that's supposed to launch the DOS compile (probably named hermit.exe or whatever), rename that to ac2game.dat and try again.
Nope, no file with that name. I'm going to try and kill it and re-download it...
So, what are the file's name then?
You need to download winrar to be able to play the game, i take it youve done that ?
EDIT: I meant you need to download WinACE not winrar to extract the files.
I just downloaded WinAce. But its permenently in German.
Downloaded files with WinAce. No voice I can hear! driving me mad. peace out
Hey you guys on this forum are great for trying to help mw out with this...
Okay I still can't play Night of the Hermit.
I tried starting over and downloading the whole thing again. Here is a list of the files I get when I unzip the compressed game file.
ACWIN.EXE (this is the application)
Hermit.exe
Readme.txt
RunDos.bat
RunWin.bat
SetupDos.bat
SetupWin.bat
Speech.vox
Doesn''t look like the file you mentioned above is part of this compressed group so maybe I need to get the file necessary to run the game elsewhere. Any clues?
Just rename hermit.exe to ac2game.dat (as I had told you) and run acwin.exe, it should work.
Originally the runwin.bat should work (it's just launching "acwin.exe hermit.exe", but due to some path problems on some XP systems it may not work directly.
Gilbot, I'm sorry but I don't understand how changing the name of a file is going to solve my problem. But I did as you suggested anyway. Thanks for your help but it did not work. I think the problem is with my operating system then because I do have Windows XP. Does this mean I can't play the game?
Are you sure you renamed it correctly?

I just downloaded the game and tested it, it worked perfectly, just rename, and launch acwin.exe.

Yep, just as you said to...
I have done everything( i stress everything) you have told me. I think it is abit dodgy because as the other guy said i have Windows XP.
So whats the bottom line? Anyone with Windows Xp can't play this game? That seems a shame... :-[

Months ago I remember not being able to play this game either and I still have windows 98
I can play it on windows xp. But i hear no voice. These are the sounds i hear:
Announments
Sound Effects: Door Opening, Glass Shattering
Sometimes music
Are the sounds necessary to play the game or is this just an enhancement? Where did you download the game from because the source I used will not even let me start the game.
What happened after the renaming and launching acwin.exe ? It worked perfectly for me.
Gilbot, I think I've had problems with this because of the version of the AGS game I have. My version is "2.22.171.0" and was able to determin by running a simple test. So it doesn't really matter that I renamed the file to AC2GAME.DAT because I stil get this message:
Error ST02 Cannot load game file AC2GAME.DAT
You must create and save a game first in room edior before you can use this engine.
I've been going round and round with this and still no luck. If others can play the game why can't I? I'm so frustrated if you know what I mean... ???
Did you extract the files and put them in the same folder?
One more, did you happened to set the explorer in its default crappy setting which hides files extensions? It's possible that the file is renamed to ac2game.dat.exe .
you know, desimaui i do exactly the same thing as you. I downloaded the game from this website if anybody wants to know.

Gilbot, Yes, I did extract the files and put them in the same folder.
Not sure I understand what you mean. about the browser and the file named ac2game.dat.exe. I have Microsoft Internet Explorer as my browser. Was I supposed to rename the file with the ac2game.dat.exe instead of ac2game.dat?
No, what I mean is that normally, the explorer of windows is set up in a crappy way, that it will hide the displayed file extensions, you have to disable to be able to rename files correctly. The file name should be just AC2GAME.DAT, no .EXE .
Its alright now. Problem solved. I reinstalled the game and did exactly as you guys said. Thanks alot.

Grunt 2,
Wow, I was never able to enjoy your game because of all the problems opening the application. The last post I did was in Dec so I sort of forgot what I did. I don't mean to behave like a moran but, can you walk me through the procedure one more time. I no longer have the game on my hard drive so I wil have to download it again.
Any help you provide will be greatly appreciated :=

Well, I'm not sure if I can actually help but I will do my best.
I am using windows xp. Heres what i did:
1) i download NOTH from this website, as well as its vox file, and put all the files in a folder called HERMIT.
2) I renamed the hermit application ac2game.dat (as Gilbot kindly pointed out) and just ran the game. It worked.
If this does not work try running the acwin program. If you have any more question just ask

Grunt2,
I have Windows XP too and thats what I thought the problem was. I have a couple of questions:
I downloaded the game from the Underdogs website and for some reason I did not get the Vox fle with it. What is this file and what does it do?
Also, you mentioned to resave the Hermit file with ac2game.dat. Do you mean renaming the file labeled, " AGS run-time engine?" (I think you do this by right clicking on the icon and selecting "rename" right?) ???

As soon as you get on to this website there is a link to NOTH at the side. Click on that and there should be a download and then a download mirror. The vox file contains the actual voice and is vital if you want the talkie to work (i think anyway), and can be downloaded from the mirror. The actual game can be downloaded from the other link. All the files i got where:
HERMIT Application -------------This is what i renamed ac2game.dat
ACWIN Application
RunDos
RunWin
SetupDos
SetupWin
a readme, and of course, the vox file.

Ok, I did everything as you did but cannot rename the hermit.exe file to ac2game.dat because when I try I get: "cannot rename hermit, it is being used by another person or program. close any program that might be using the file and try again." Did you rename it by right clicking on the hermit.exe file and selecting, "rename?" Or is there another way? ???

Reboot your system and try again. Chances are you had executed it before which crashed and wasn't released from memory, or it's the virus scanner's friendly habbit that it'll scan an executable file whenever you select it.

That should be it, unless there're some weird settings in your computer that prevent you from renaming files.
Yeah, what he said.
Anybody out there??
Night of the Hermit rules!
