I was really enjoying MI4, but then I came to it, Monkey Kombat, I just couldn't get the hang of it.  So can anyone help me with this as I haven't played the game in ages and I just wanna get past this one bit, any completed Monkey Kombat charts would be nice.

Sam.

i really got buggerd by this one too. I could fill out a chart for you but it wouldnt help after  much searching, I found out that monkey comabt is random. you cannot cheat past it. the only way to do it is to play againts loads of people and see what their moves do to you. not these down in a list along with the noises and the animal types. this is what i did. it takes a while (i know, fuck the monkeys, when to I get to see leChuck again) but its the only way bro
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

While we're on the subject, am I the only person who thought the whole "Monkey Kombat" thing was a pretty entertaining puzzle? I thought it was a nice change from the increasingly stale item puzzles.

Actually, Escape From Monkey Island is a fairly under-rated game in general around here, I think. Sure, some of the graphics are weak and the robot monkey bit *was* shite, but aside from that it doesn't do a great deal wrong that COMI didn't already do worse, in my opinion.

Naturally, I would've preferred it if neither game had ever been made, but what can you do?

Actually, I enjoyed Monkey Kombat too. I'm not sure why, but probably because it was a nice diversion. Though yeah, the robot fight thing was pretty crappy.

And like Zootyfruit said, MK is random, so you'll have to play through it. Although, if you really don't wanna do that, you could always search for saved games on the internet, even if this is frowned upon by some people. :P

I loved monkey kombat :D you just have to notice what beat what, just like insult sword fighting.

I agree with PaulSC - EMI isn actually a pretty good adventure game. The sad bit is, it's a very, very poor Mnkey Island game. But it's a very good game standalone. I liked the puzzles, especially the time-swamp (or something) ones. I liked the style. Man, I even liked the interface, although I wouldn't like to play another adventure with the same one. But it simply falls short of CMI...

...and as for Monkey Kombat... it's just a 3d version of swordfighting. Personally, I'll always prefer swordfighting, but Monkey Kombat is actually pretty entertaining.

I am one of the few who thought Monkey Kombat was one of the easiest bits of MI4.

However, I also thought it was one of the most retarded bits.

Actually I disagree with this, and this is what I mean by "EMI doesn't do much that CMI didn't do worse". I think Curse Of Monkey Island is a decent enough adventure game in itself (though I'd still easily put it at the bottom of the 90's Lucasarts adventures pile), but I think it's an absolutely fucking atrocious Monkey Island sequel. The complete disregard for consistent characterization was slap in the face to fans in my opinion, and truthfully it annoys me how happy most of them were to receive it.

Exactly how anyone could play through the first two games and come away thinking the COMI Elaine Marley was a logical direction to take the character is genuinely beyond me. The portrayal of Stan misses the point so completely that it makes my head spin, and even Guybrush for the most part is reduced to being just your generic wisecracking protagonist - only superficially similar to the original character. I mean, Wally was only in one short scene, and they still managed to get him all wrong!

The thing that gets me is that there was really no reason for the game to even exist. There's no real story to speak of – at the end of the day the only point seems to be to cancel out the (fantastic) ending of MI2 in order to allow for further franchising of the series. The genuine imagination, eccentricity and personality of the first two games is lost almost entirely, leaving a soulless, commercialised piece of crap that thinks that sticking to a superficial check-list of "Things To Put In a Monkey Island Game" is enough to make it a good sequel.

Now, Escape isn't exactly a masterpiece either, but as far as evil bastardized corruptions of the Monkey Island games go, I think it's fairly decent. At least they seem to have *tried* to make the characters a tiny bit consistent with the first two games, even if they still missed the mark a fair bit, and at least this one actually had a story to tell – at least until it reaches the rather lame Monkey Island section.

All of this probably sounds a little over the top, but... well, you know what they say: it's the disgruntled fan that howls the loudest!

COMI, that is one of my favourite Monkey Island games, but on the Monkey Kombat bit, I enjoyed the insult swordfighting, but that was plain english, not "Oop", "EEk".

Well, when I first played the game, I KNEW it would be very different from the other two - everything attested to it, from the non-existence of Ron Gilbert to the new, zanier graphics. I KNEW some things would be explored in new directions. And frankly, if this were Gabriel Knight, I'd howl right along with you, but MI ain't one of my favourite series. Maybe that's why I simply accepted the changes that were made, and didn't even notice any such inconsistency.

I wonder if I was the only one that thought Stan had a southern accent. Maybe it was his cowboy hat...

I don't know if this will help you out at all...

As was stated earlier, since Monkey Kombat is random you have to resort to trial and error to figure out what "noises" correspond to each move and also which moves defeat other moves.

I found that the fastest way to do this is to just try to copy your opponents move ("monkey see, monkey do").  For example, if the monkey you're fighting uses "gimpy gibbon" try to get Guybrush to change his move to "gimpy gibbon" as well (if you've already figured out the right noises in order to do so).  Once you do that, you'll end both end up in a draw, and your opponent will reveal a new move that you may not have seen before and you can jot it down.

It's still a very long process, but hopefully that speeds it up a bit for you.
