Title: Professor Neely & The Death Ray of Doom *SPOILERS*
Post by: MiSaNtHrOpE on Wed 15/12/2010 03:57:51
I'm about halfway through, but I'm stuck.

I have:

-Magnet
-Tin Can
-Front Door Key
-Grappling Hook
-Old Key
-Lab Coat
-Glass Shard (from Jacob's Ladder)
-Bathroom Key
-Shower Curtain
-Shopping List
-BLT
-Toaster
-Death Ray Blueprints
-Dr Spliner's Diary
-Basement Lab Passcode
-Opened Mail
-Fake Credit Card

I can't figure out where to go next, or how to use the Lab Coat to get past the door. :\

Hey!

To get into the lab, here's hint #1:
Spoiler
Read Spliner's Diary a bit more and you'll find the pass code...
[close]

Hint #2:
Spoiler
You've got to make a disguise, which you've already figured out from the panel. Neely says he can't get in because he doesn't look like Spliner...
[close]

Further?
Hint #3:
Spoiler
There is a painting of Spliner in the foyer.
[close]

Still stuck? Here's the answer!
Spoiler
Use the grapling hook to tear down the face of Spliner out of the painting in the hallway. Combine it with the lab coat. Now you can enter the lab.
[close]

My turn??
Spoiler
Where did you find the blueprints? I need those! I'm at the end! ...I think.
[close]

Spoiler
Did you find the 'weird' shopping list?  You might also consider it a kind of recipe.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I'm sorry, I don't know how to make the spoiler boxes, though I looked in the Formatting guide.

Use the recipe (Shopping List) on the fridge in the kitchen.

Could someone be kind and direct me to this shopping list mentioned above, please? I'm certain I've tried everything logical (and illogical) at this point, and I'm getting no hints from any examining/exploring/combining. I have everything else that MiSaNtHrOpE listed in the first post, but have ground to a halt. Help! :'(

Same thing is happening to me: I can't see the...
Spoiler
...shopping list anywhere.
[close]
I have noticed there might be 2 ways...
Spoiler
...of doing certain things.
1. Opening the pantry cage: I've mixed baking soda and vinegar and blew it up, but later I've managed to build a Mop and magnet tool that would've allowed reaching for the key, I guess.
2. To assemble the Dr. Spliner costume, you must use his father face. It can either be done by following Snake's instructions or by using the sharp glass shard on a second photo, above the fireplace on the Dr.'s office.
[close]
Maybe...
Spoiler
...that choices had an effect on the availability of the shopping list?

Spoiler
It's hidden in a secret safe.

#2

The safe is actually hidden very typical as such things go...

#3
Spoiler
It's behind the picture in the study.

I'm also stuck:
Spoiler
I'm in the lab and I've got the blueprints, but can't get past the laser-thingy. Frankly, I haven't got a clue how to proceed!

Thankyou Mad, I can't believe that I hadn't uncovered that - I even tried talking to it earlier! ;D

Spoiler
Ok, now I've gotten past that, I've also found out how to get past the laser - try reading the Doctor's "personal" thoughts *to* him

There is Indeed more than one way too solve three puzzles…

Spoiler
Getting though the front door , Getting out of the pantry , and taking the face off the portraits all have two ways to solve them, The pantry has two because You might not have gotten the magnet from outside and getting the face needed two solutions because some of my play testers never thought to use the grappling hook.

However choosing one way over another should never prevent you from completing the game.
Just thought you might like to know :)

Note: So my previous comment make a bit more sense: I misread MiSaNtHrOpE's hint and understood...
Spoiler
...the shopping list was supposed to be in the fridge.
[close]
Note 2: Ouch.
Spoiler
The safe was hidden in a place so typical, that missing it like I did actually hurts a bit.
[close]
Note 4: I kept seeing Yosemite Sam ( :D ), instead of the professor, on the actions menu (where his head is split in 4 colours).
Speaking of which, the colour based actions system was the only part of the game I found confusing (counter-intuitive) and couldn't get used to, no matter what. Loved everything else! Thanks for developing and sharing.

Off to try to open the front door using method #2...

I also agree. It is far easier for the player to have entirely different cursors than one cursor with different colors

You mean the one that won't open since the bad guy redirects his power? Yes, I have. I think it has something to do with the wires next to the refrigiator and in the basement, and perhaps the Jacob's Ladder.
But no luck so far.

Yeah, I finished it now.

Thanks for the game...it was enjoyable. I thought I had applied every item in the room to get rid of the Doctor. Needed help with that one.

I think I found the "Hidden Game"!
Spoiler
You can get the hidden game "Egor's Quest" by putting the toaster inside the compartment next to the death ray but now it's saying problem with igor.exe ala Windows BSOD. What did I do wrong? Or is that just what is supposed to happen? I get it when I enter the door at the top of the screen and when I finally reach the "sacred tube".

Also, the game doesn't end after I get rid of the Doctor. Am I supposed to do something else?

My major suggestion for improvement are more helpful messages when trying to use the items or "suggesting" what needs to happen next. For instance, when I combined two items, it simply did it and didn't tell me it did anything until I happened to check the inventory.

In regards to right-clicking on an item to find out a critical piece of information:
Spoiler
Also, the right click trick to find the password code was unintuitive imo--although there was a hint elsewhere that he changed it on the 30th. I think it's an interface problem more than anything else.

Is there supposed to be a use for the curtain in the bathroom?

BTW, everyone loves a good bathroom joke...try and flush the toilet many times in succession!

Nice game. Pretty funny.

I was stuck in the lab...
Spoiler
didn't think about annoying him with the journal.
[close]

Maybe some clues about it would've been nice. Especially since
Spoiler
there was no indication there are embarrassing things in there. I would've made that note available to read before and Neely could said "Oh, how embarrassing!" Then let him talk to Spliner in the lab but he should ignore Neely, being too busy, until you start reading the journal.

About tech issues, Egor walks jagged when screen is scrolling.

Anyway, great game! Thanks for making it!

Spoiler
You need to read the diary from the day you read in the planner that the password was changed.
[close]

If you are still stuck:
Spoiler
The planner tells you which day the password was changed. Now go read the diary, and "right click" on that day. You'll read the code and "memorize" it for the door. This one got me too. The right clicking on the day was NOT intuitive.

“The right clicking on the day was NOT intuitive.”

Spoiler
Just to clear up any confusion clicking the page in question is not what enables the option to look at the diary date simply turning to that date in the planer will do this ( I checked the code)
The comment from right clicking the planer page was just something that was added to confirm that that was Indeed the date when the code was changed.
If your referring to the diary “read the 31st” well it’s a simple dialog so I can’t do to much about it .
I’ll definitely try using some other method for book reading in the future.

Sorry if this has caused to much confusion , If its any consolation this thread is giving me some good insight in to how I should design things in the future so thanks for the input.

Great game Sonicrumpets.

The only part I had trouble with was...

Spoiler
reading the diary to him at the end.

I had no problem finding the passcode.

I used the credit card to get into the house and the grappling hook to get the painting down. I'm still trying to work out what the other way into the house would have been. Maybe something with the broken window?

Sorry to say I didn't find the hidden mini game.

Step by step guide to the "mini game" ( It's more of a LOZ tribute or a Easter egg than anything else)

Spoiler
Step one: Get the toaster from the powered up refrigerator make sure that you pick up the BLT in the tray or You won’t get the toaster when you use the panel a second time!

Step two: get into the lab

Step three: get rid of Dr. Spliner

Step four: use the toaster on “Insidious Machine part”

Step five: briefly enjoy playing Egore Quest as It will eventually crash due to Dr. Spliner’s choice of OS.

Professor Neely fun fact:
Originally the toaster was used to electrocute some piranha in a pool in the basement. The broken Jacobs ladder fell into the pool and you had to kill the fish to take it.
However the puzzle was plagued by a number of very unpredictable bugs so it was cut from the game.

Thanks for responding. My only feedback is that if I'm selecting a menu to read the correct day...then I should've gotten the code from that day. I didn't know that using a special key on that day was required, which was my complaint...since I "got" the puzzle but couldn't extract the code directly. It appears I didn't use the interface correctly to go to the date in question...in which case I stand corrected...Thanks for the feedback.

Another suggestion is to not allow the character to retrieve inventory items that aren't used. I'm sure you had a use for them at some point...but coming from old school Sierra games I know that almost all inventory items have a use in the game. I'm not including items that based on the puzzles which have multiple solutions. Example: Curtain, tin cup, etc. have no uses as far as I know.

Great effort...this is inspiring me to get cracking on a game.

Alright... no Jacobs ladder (been reading the walkthrough ? :-)

The diary isn't something that you can get in the beginning and isn't something that disappears so probably that's something else.
According to your inventory you haven't been into the room next to the bathroom so you don't have the diary yet.
Go to the bedroom upstairs and see what you can do.

Spoiler
Use the wallpaper to uncover the ventilation shaft and drop the Jacobs ladder in there.
