Title: Talons of terror
Post by: sthomannch on Wed 08/04/2009 19:42:48
Almost finished it
Spoiler

have 240/250 points, found Mingo and use the totem. Mingo is more experienced, so I have to distract him. Don't know how. Have totem (combined with talon = pulsing totem), gun, ID badge, bolt cutter, cell phone and only little time to act. Used almost anything on anything.

Wow, someone is playing my game :)

Yes, what Leon said is true.  To finish that sequence you must:

Spoiler
Use the totem, find out Mingo is stronger.  Shoot the tree to distract him, then re-use the totem without him countering you.

Hope you like the game!

Spoiler

Used the totem already (obvious), read the message that Mingo was stronger, tried to shoot at different possible targets, but got the message that I couldn't do that, then our was swept away. I don't know how many times I restored the game. Obviously I don't find the correct hotspot / target. I think I searched through the whole scene with the gun cursor ("Tree by hardware store", "Hardware store", "Ivy covered wall", "Tree", "Ken", "Mingo", "Eagle Spirit", "Arsay"). Leon refers to the tree by the hardware store.

Solved

Spoiler

The problem was that I opened the inventory screen and grabbed the gun. When I accidentally moved the cursor to the upper edge of the screen, I saw the gun icon. So there are different uses : throw the gun or shoot :-)

More info:

Spoiler
It is on the right side of your screen.  It is called "Tree By Hardware Store".  It is the same tree where if you look at it, it makes fun saying that it is abnormally wide, and would be easy to shoot or something.

If you need more help, click the link below to view a screenshot I took from the AGS editor of that screen.  I circled what you need.  I didn't want to show it in the page because it is a bit of a spoiler.

LOL yeah, that would do it.

In fact, if you click the "Use" button in the inventory on the gun, I yell at you for doing so lol.  That IS why I put the gun button on the GUI at the top :)

The yelling right after the start of the game :-)

I enjoyed your game, very interesting and nicely done.

Looking forward to the next one.

I am on day 2 and i have spoken to the hardware store owner. He keeps telling me to leave.  What do I do, and i also cant get guess the jellybean jar.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Thu 09/04/2009 09:21:18
Well...... if the owner asks you to leave... be kind and leave  ;)
About the jar... oooppss.... you might want to restore the game and enter the store again.

My conclusion: pay more attention to the shopkeeper.

NOTE: I only now realise that you only have one chance to get to know the number of beans.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: evilDMT on Thu 09/04/2009 10:14:15
So there is a deadend in the game.. sigh.. well i did leave of course, but theres nothing for me to continue on.

edit: got the jellybeans and left when he asked me to leave. but i still have no idea what to do.

Post by: Leon on Thu 09/04/2009 10:55:43
Not sure what you've done already. But have you really tried with the shopkeeper?

Spoiler
Did you show your badge to him and kept questioning about the thunderbird? If so, walk back to your car and the story will continue....
[close]
Advice: pay attention to dialogs... they contain crucial information to continue (not only at the shop). About the beans... you're right. But it wouldn't be much of a puzzle if the shopkeeper kept telling you the right number, would it? ;) And, you can always really try to guess the right number. Or start with 1, then 2 etc.

Spoiler
It would only take you 412 attempts... :-)

The next part is the code at the power plant, for some unknown reason before it didn't progress the story as i thought. anyway, i've been taking close notice of the dialogues but nothing about giving the clue for the code.  i also went back to the farm to see if there was any clues there, but to no avail nothing.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Thu 09/04/2009 11:43:09
It's a keypad that's used regularly. So the keys must give the clue but not straight away...

Spoiler
The solution for this can be found at the police station...

Did you find out about the thunderbird already? And the powers that Mingo has?
What's in your inventory at the moment?

I am at the door puzzle. But there are four numbers marked by the finger print set. There are thousands of combinations for four numberrs. am I missing something? thanks!
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Sat 18/04/2009 08:45:55
Yep, you're missing something. There's a trick to bring the 5040 possible combinations back to 24.
You use your fingers to enter the code, right? And there's a way to reveal that....

Spoiler
Go to the policestation and get a fingerprint leaflet for kids. There's a sample on it that you can use on the keypad so it only show the four keys that are used. Since these are 4 different ones, it leaves you 24 possibilities. Knowing Murphy you probably need them...

I think, if I am reading correctly, that Gimble already got that far.  The four numbers are already known to him.  So that means the four digit code is needed to unlock the door.

I made this puzzle like real-life.  If nobody was available to get you into the room in real life, and you actually did this to figure out which keypad buttons were used, you would be in this situation.  Your only recourse would be randomly pushing things :)

So no, you aren't missing anything, the code is unknown to you, and you need to figure it out.  The only way to do that is trying combinations until you get it.

But, for help, here are some pointers:

1st digit of the code:
Spoiler
8
[close]

1st two digits:
Spoiler
81
[close]

Full code :
Spoiler
8137
[close]

On a side note, a friend of mine was playing through, and I was helping him solve some puzzles if he needed it, and I completely forgot the code.  I forced him to go through all the combinations because I couldn't be bothered to look it up :)

Hope it helps,

Bill

Reading back, you're right. He already got that far. But then there aren't thousands of posibilities and with a bit of try and error the solution should be easily found. Probably after try 23...

And to correct my previous response... it's 10.000 possible combinations because you don't know that there might be a number repeated...

Done!  Your right it is  more realistic when you have to guess all four numbers.
Great job on this game. Really enjoyed it. Thanks....

Hi Bill, I want to compliment you in the way you Changed the Adventure Games. When I entered the library I thought I was in for a Nausiating search for a book that would contain an hour of reading. Didn't happen. The game itself is the puzzle. No distractions from the plot and lots of clues. Excellent new aproatch. Can't wait for the next one this is the way an adventure game should be built. Thanks
Bob

Wow Bob, that is a positively glowing review.  Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.  Feedback is the reason I make games, and stuff like that makes it worth it :)

I look forward to getting Episode 3 out there.

Okay I'm on the first day and I've already visited the farmer(twice), the sheriff(twice), the vet, the dead cow, and then the professor. I have no clue what to do now.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Sun 09/08/2009 09:53:58
Hmmm... you might have missed some clues:

Spoiler
At the field where the cow was taken from (walk from the farm to the right), look at the drag marks, the blood spatter, the fence and the road left of the fence (easily missed).

If that's not it, give me your score so I can see where you are in the game.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: CosmoQueen on Sun 09/08/2009 18:12:38
Okay I did that all that and now my score is at 121. I think I might need a lil more help. I looked at the walkthrough and I did everything it says to do for the first part, but it's still not going into the next day. Is it because I didn't do it in the right order? Should I start over?
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: CosmoQueen on Sun 09/08/2009 20:10:06
Well I started it over and followed the walkthrough but when I get back to the hotel nothing happens!!!
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Sun 09/08/2009 20:35:40
It's not the order.. It must be something else. Did you complete all dialogs? What's in your inventory?
Title: Re: Talons of terror

I'm pretty sure I did. And what I have is my badge, gun, and phone.

It's 121 and sure I can.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Sun 09/08/2009 23:50:28
The only two points I can find during the first day are the fence in the field of the cow.

[update]

And indeed. In the field next to the farm, look at the gate (2 points). Talk to the sheriff and tell him your theory. Then leave the station and day 2 will start.

OMG Leon you are awesome!!! I was going everywhere over and over again and I just couldn't figure out what to do! The one little thing I missed was clicking on the fence. Man, I can't believe I missed that! LOL Thanks a ton Leon! You're always bailing me out of trouble when I get stuck in these games. I really appreciate it!!!
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: CosmoQueen on Mon 10/08/2009 01:29:30
By the way, I can't seem to enter in the code. Everytime I try to press a button it says that "You randomly push buttons to no avail". Typing them doesn't seem to work either.
Title: Re: Talons of terror
Post by: Leon on Mon 10/08/2009 08:17:21
You then actually don' t know the code yet. To press the right buttons:

Spoiler
Detach the fingerprint set from the pamphlet and use the brush on the keypad. When you know which numbers to use, try to figure out the combination.

Alrighty I'm at 210 and I'm stuck again! The walkthrough says that I'll meet Mingo in the streets but I don't see him there. And when I go to the hotel, I get captured and die.
Title: Re: Talons of terror

To meet Mingo, you need something to be able to defeat him. My guess is you missed something in the museum. What's in your inventory?

Then you're not quick enough. Just walk straight over to the dark section near the hotel.
