Title: The House That Ate My Soul
Post by: Artphreak on Sun 22/10/2006 19:26:35
Hey I need some help with this game...already... ;D
Spoiler
I'm trying to open the safe inside the study room...I just entered the house, I can't get into any of the locked rooms and I don't really know what to do; I have in my inventory asprin and a hammer

Try to take a key from the room with the safe in it. Then use that to open one of the doors in the first floor and you'll be able to continue.

I'm having trouble combining items in the inventory and maybe because of that I'm completely stuck:
Spoiler

I don't seem to be able to assemble the key. I have the dagger, two key pieces: ring and a jagged bit (are there more?), a topaz, an amethyst, the monk's bag and a water sprayer. I can trade for the watering can, salt, fern and a potato (the last two, I've used already, but it's possible to pick them up again).
I still haven't been able to open the trunk in the dungeon, I haven't opened the drawer in the safe room and I haven't opened the ice cold door. I presume I need the key for one of the latter two.

Thanks!

There is only one item that the witch will accept from you. If you haven't met the painting of the little boy, then you still need to complete other tasks first; if you have, then you are on the right track. He can get something for you that will please the witch.

This one's tricky, because there are no in-game hints. I solved it by chance, and it's not very logical. I can't even think of a good hint for you without giving out the puzzle, so read on at your own risk :)

Spoiler

There is a hole on the ground at the front yard. You need to pour water down it to get a trade item you need in order to advance.

I think it's not directly related, but I'm still stuck right before that point so I can't really say. I'd rather not discuss my theories about that puzzle, yet, as it seems you still have a bit to discover before you reach that point.

You are told that the pole needs a larger hook. You can find it stuck on a wall, but unfortunately I forgot exactly where. I think it was at the library, or maybe at the top of the spiral staircase. It's definitely not the one in the little kid's painting area, which is already holding the oil lamp.

Well, it seems the game does have some problems combining items, at least here. I just started pressing the numbers randomly while holding the left shift until both items

No, not at all. See my first post in this thread. I already e-mailed nihilyst about this, but I know he's on a pretty busy schedule, so I don't know whether we'll get a proper fix soon.

I'm glad you got past that puzzle. I'm stuck further into the game and I dare think it's because of this same issue. Hopefully I'm just missing something (I'm still waiting for an answer to my first post).

Right, so, RIGHT after I combined the two items, it then "forgot" they were combined and then the game crashed. Again. For the fourth time. I want to cry. And now it's confusing to combine them... I may never get as far in the game as you!

Check the workaround I posted in the game's announcement thread for the crash caused by saving the games. At least it will make it less scary to play. Remember to quit after you save, apply the workaround, then saveing will work once more again. Rinse, apply, repeat...

You are not very far from where I am, though.

ALRIGHT! I finally beat my keyboard repeatedly and shrieked profanities at it and it FINALLY did what I told it to. So here goes my last dumb question before I hopefully catch up:
Spoiler
I think I have all the items, but I can't give them to the witch and I haven't yet been able to combine them (oh PLEASE not that again.) Is there a suitable container I'm missing? Or do I need to hold down Lshift and beat buttons repeatedly until the indredients all combine?

Spoiler

Fortunately it sufices to self-combine one of the items (I obviously don't know which one, or if any ingredient works) and Ben puts all of them together in the monk's bag. He should tell you explicitly if you don't have all necessary items. There are only 10 possibilities, so go ahead and try. I.e., LShift 1 1, LShift 2 2, etc. up to 0.
Don't forget to try with the empty slots as well...

I have exhausted all conversation topics with her, now she just says goodbye when I click on her...What ingredients does the witch need and what are they for?

I'm having trouble with the picture-inventory thing, too.  I've tried giving something to the Mr. Elliott guy after he picks up the fern, but all it says is "Not a good start". Does that mean I just don't have the right item yet?  Also, I can't seem to get into the door without a handle...  I'm sure I'll feel really stupid when I hear the answers, but it's a cool game and I'd like to keep going with it.  (Hope I didn't upset anyone but not using any hidden text but (a- I'm not sure how, and (b- I tried not to give anything away... Omi- If you mean the door in the basement (next to the potatoes) ignore it... you can't open it.Ã,  And I sometimes got the "Not a good start" message (even when they took the itemÃ,  ::) ) He should take any item you give him, correct or not. So, maybe leave the room and come in and try it again? Or see if he's taken the item, despite the message. This game really is neat, but very buggy.

Florence is deaf, but there's no need to shout.

Just delete the SL.GUI file and unpack a new copy from the game's ZIP/RAR. Or, better yet, get the updated version that nihilyst announced recently: it fixes this particular bug.

Spoiler
No. Once you picked up the fern, you can while playing Ben use items on Elliott to exchange the one you used with the one Elliott possesses. Then do what ch33rio already suggested.

@Geewhiz
Spoiler
Passed the first gap, grab the pickaxe and trade it with the watering can. Use the pickaxe to break down the wall. Grab the hook upstairs. With that you can grab the lantern.

Thank you! I'mÃ,  off to read the other posts aboutÃ,  the lever and what to do next.

I'm  having a heck of a time combing anything, is there something to download to fix this, I thought I read that somewhere...
I need to combine salt and water, hook and pole.

How do I switch items with Elliott?  I did it and then got booted out of the game and don't know how I did it.  I picked up on item on the cliff and now I need to exchange it.

How do I get ...
Spoiler
... a list of ingredients from the witch? I gave her a rat, but she doesn't say anything useful when I talk to her. I already put a lot of junk in a bag but I don't know why.

I have a blue and a yellow gem, and 2 parts of a key, a dagger, a watering can, a potatoe, and I think that's about it.

Help please :)

Well, I finished the game and I really enjoyed it but I found the combining frustrating.  It does seem as if the closer all the objects are to each other in your inventory, the easier it was.  When I had them all side-by-side I was better able to do it.

Done! There was a bug or two that made it a bit more difficult to finish, but thanks for the great game!

I'm stuck. All i have left are the 3 key pieces, I've solved every possible puzzle, and now I'm out of ideas, there is no one left to talk to that can help me, If i need the dagger I could get a potato to trade it back with, or if i need the watering can, same thing, but I don't know what I need to do.

The House That Ate My Soul walkthrough!

Keyboard bug

For some reason, the game works only properly with a German keyboard layout. Otherwise inventory items can not be combined.
Go to your configuration screen, click on the globe icon, select the language tab, press the details button, add another keyboard, choose the German (IBM) layout from a list and then set it as your standard keyboard. Once you finished playing the game, you can change it back.

Tibby, use the latest update and do not load old savegames. Also make sure that you set the input locale to IBM German keyboard, and not a variant (e.g. Austrian or Swiss or something).
