I am playing the game and I seem to have got further than you guys so I will try to help some.
Yes it took over an hour for me to download from the medium games section.
Spoiler
You seem to have to talk to everybody a lot, like go back and keep talking to them, anyway after talking to sailor you know he wants to join the ship but can't, so you talk to priest, he wants you to fix the stained glass window, so after he gives you the cross you give it to the seagull by just clicking it somewhere near his feet I think, then go back and talk to priest, he will keep his eye on the seagull for you so  you go back to stained glass window and click on it, then give the glass to priest and he will give you document that sailor needs.
When you get to island, talk to crazy man, click on ocean and you will see he has no mirror (shadow) now to get the coin to make a bet with him takes a bit of pixel hunting but you walk into trees and use your knife to cut a branch, also get a mushroom, then take the chain off your cross, I had to lighten my moniter quite a bit to see the stuff in my inventory, you combine the branch with the chain and the mushroom, it makes a fishing rod to get the coin and you use coin with crazy man.

I have managed to get a bit further than this but now I am stuck too so am off to bed so good luck.

Walk into the trees, so you're  a bit in the middle of the screen.  You should just be able to pick up the branch (it looks like a tree).  Use the branch to pick up the hanging bit of lianna, that's stuck up in the tree toward the left of the screen.  Pick up the mushroom that's the farthest to the right of the screen.  Your cross should be back in your inventory, even though you didn't pick it back up.  Use your knife on the cross to cut off the chain.  Combine branch, lianna, chain, and mushroom to get the coin.

Spoiler
I have given up in total frustration, I keep getting stuck in the screen where the french man is, I try to walk out the same way I came in and he just won't go. I reloaded the game a few times and he still won't go. I had already talked to british man, how do you know he wants a drink? Where did you get tobacco and how did you get first piece of map, who has it?  I do have one more thing though, a rock, I walked north from where british man is and you meet a man there and there is a rock on the ground beside him. You can talk to him too. Thats how I found out there are 3 pieces of the map. But I think I am giving up as I am totally frustrated, it took me 2 hours just to find out I could walk from the beach over the top of the cave. lol. I don't have a clue what I am doing now especially as I keep getting stuck in the screen where frenchman is. I even tried going back to cave on beach just in case somebody had come back. Soooooo frustrating

Joyce, don't give up, we can do it!  :D
Spoiler
I had to keep walking away from the hotspot where you can leave the Frenchman's screen, and just click like crazy in that lower right corner. Try talking to him again, and then walk away.   The pirate prisoner has the first piece of map.  You need to use the rock you found to sharpen the sword you found in the cave (let me know if you were able to get this).  Give this to the prisoner as an escape weapon, and he'll give you the first piece of map.  The frenchman tells you later that the englishman is a drunkard, and that he'll give you his piece of map for the flag you stole from him.  So, I'm assuming I need to find alcohol, for him to give me the flag?   The flag is nowhere in sight. He won't let me walk behind the screen. If I'm missing anything let me know

and I now have the tobacco and first piece of map. Did I pick you up wrong, did you loose your flag because mine is still in my inventory. This game is very frustrating especially as he walks sooo slow. I did the british guy first this time then went to french man, talked to him, picked up the flag and left the screen with no problem this time, maybe there is a bug in the game, who knows.

Well I made the mistake of going back to french man again trying to figure out what to do next and am stuck again trying to leave the screen, there is definitely a bug of some sort. Did you try and pick up the small picture on the wall of french mans house and it says No not now, and if you look at it you get a close up. Can't figure that one out at all but anyway I am stuck trying to get out of screen and I am fed up trying this time. so good luck Maybe I will give it another shot when I am not so frustrated especially when you start game you have to listen to all that with his dying father, can't see any way of avoiding that. anyway good luck, maybe i will give it another shot when i am not so frustrated[/spoiler]

Hi Rosie
Yep that is one of the things I was complaining about, having to go through all the scenes with the dying father, starting game, cause ya can't even reload from the screen of the island even though it has a reload written right there, you have to wait till priest stops talking etc before you can reload, so sorry I can't help you. I was so proud of myself for getting as far as I did only to keep getting stuck in one screen on sleepy island and not being able to walk out of it, I gave it a rest for a while. Of course I was stuck with what to do next as well lol, but the getting stuck through no fault of mine is the frustrating part.

Jacquie and Rosie,
Spoiler
I just thought of something, you've probably done it already, but just in case you haven't - Ã, when you opened the captains box you got a whistle and a piece of paper, think I had to scroll down in inventory before I saw it, maybe you have to read the piece of paper before the whistle will work properly. I did get past that part after blowing the whistle numerous times and I think it finally worked when I put it over the ocean in the bottom part somewhere, an animal of some sort pops his head out and you can talk to him and he finally helps you.

If you get past this then you will be able to join the rest of the "stuck" club in the next part lol.

Im terribly terribly sorry for all yo problems! I didnt know. I know this games has a lot o bugs, but nuthin is perfect. Really sorry, but now:

- To skip the first animation:

Sorry...

- To get away from the floating slag:

Open captains box and use whistle: first on the upper left of the screen, than upper right, lower right and finally lower left.

- To get the cutlass from the rock:

Use knife first...

- To walk away the screen:

didnt know about this problem.

- To drink the englishman:

You have to find these ingredients: kreecha juice, mud, oil, another liquid (try to clean your nose). Btw. have you found Mr. Creek? If not, use your eyes.

Once again - sorry bout that everything. I just tried to do a good game, but I failed. Sorry.

Title: so called walktrough
Post by: Best on Tue 28/12/2004 21:29:10
The Sleepy Island â€" so called walktrough

Excuse my English

1 screen â€" harbour â€" you cant leave the screen, try to talk and talk, use the cross not with a bird, but with the mast.
2 screen â€" island and crazy man â€" try to find the old man's mirror, find: branch, liana (hanging down from the tree), mushroom, cut the cross and you have chain, get all these together, you have rod
3 screen â€" ocean â€" whistle with your whistle by using it on the ocean

ISLAND
-   look at the rock near the board â€" Mr Creek (talk to him about Kreecha first)
-   get the cutlass from the rock
-   if you cant leave the screen where the French is (I didnt know bout this)
-   about how to drink the Englishman: you have to fill the oil jar with Kreecha (after talking about with Creek â€" later in the game), than with mud and finally with something that comes out of your nose
-   THE THING IS THAT YOU HAVE TO TALK TO CREEK ABOUT KREECHA FOR THE SECOND TIME JUST AFTER YOU GOT TO KNOW, THAT THE ENGLISH IS A BIG DRUNKARD. I THINK SO and sorry again, but hopefully it will work
-   when the French wont give you the map â€" give him tobacco

Hope thats everything. Sorry.

URGGGHHHHH!!!!  I've already DONE all those things.   Are you telling me I have to do it in a certain order????  If that's the case, then I'm done with this game.  I would have to go back to the beginning to change what I've done, and it just takes WAY too long to get through cut scenes and walk around.

Title: Re: The Sleepy Island
Post by: karelimur on Tue 28/12/2004 23:41:25
I took the big step back, and yes, you do need to do things in that order exactly.  Don't talk to Mr Creek at all about the plant until the frenchman tells you the english lord is a drunkard.  Go back and talk to Mr Creek. Then the plant will be ready to take the juice from.
I have the whole map now, and have entered the forest.
My cross has mysteriously disappeared now, and I think I need it to proceed.

Do you mean the guys up to the north at the crossroads because I have already went in there. I went back reloaded game starting at the island, did exactly what you said to do and when I went back to talk to Mr Creek the second time there is no option to talk about the plant again. I give up

The englishman is in the tent next to the pirate. I had difficulty getting into the tent at first. You need to walk near the opening and the use the hand just inside the opening. try that .

I finally finished. I would not have known about entering the tent  without help.  I just kept clicking around the entrance ( with the boot I think)  Until I got it.
This game is a little buggy but all in all it was pretty good.
Thanks

Glad you made it. It was a fairly good game but very buggy in parts. I couldn't have completed it without reading previous posts. Cheers till the next game

Have you read all the previous posts in this thread? This game drove me nuts, you have to do things in a certain order because if you don't other things won't happen for you. Don't worry about flag disappearing, if you have been in the tent thats supposed to happen. Squeek does nothing. Read all the posts and if still stuck come back and ask again :)

I'm afraid the order of actions started to drive me mad and I opted to not complete the game. Which is a shame as there are enjoyable elements to it. I must have restarted playing from the start about 4 times trying to get certain things to happen.

I just finished Sleepy Island.  I thought it was a good game.  Maybe I was lucky, but I didn't encounter any game killing bugs.  I did things a bit out of order (from what the w/t listed here) yet I managed to finish no problem.

I think Best Willis got a lot of bad words for making the game hard. I think it's wrong.
Yes the game is hard and can be frustrating at times.
But that's the challenge of playing adventure games. If it's too easy there's no satisfaction. I think this game has really cool innovative puzzles and that's great. Only I would advise Best to not use the hotspot searching method next game cos can be really frustrating. (like the exact places you need to whistle on) and not make it so linear that you have to do the actions on the island in certain order. That's what we call "walking dead" and that's not cool.

Downloaded it and tried to do it without any hints. At first, it was fun and I progressed. On one of the islands though, disaster stroke: Unfortunately, inventory items vanished without any explanation and certain actions could be done if I followed one route, but if I restarted and used a different order of actions, I could not proceed in other places.

I looked up the hints and followed the advise, but then other inventory items just vanished (I call these things bugs and not "puzzles"). The story seems to be good, the graphics are nice, but because the game was so buggy and partly simple pixel hunting, I finally deleted it. Too bad for all the work done on this project.
