Title: Trance-Pacific
Post by: paolo on Sun 23/09/2007 21:11:14
This is the official Hints and Tips thread for Trance-Pacific.

Please be nice to others:

* by using spoiler tags around hints, like this: [ hide]your hint goes here[ /hide] but WITHOUT the spaces before the "hide" and the "/hide". This gives:
Spoiler
your hint goes here
[close]
* by NOT posting solutions or walkthroughs.

The most valuable hints I can give you are the following:

* Read the README file
* Pay attention to the characters' conversation in the bar in the intro - there are clues that will help you later
* Talk to Eve or Nick when you get stuck - often they will have a good idea or will get things moving again
* Look in your inventory for something you can use
* Try using the Memo on the other characters in the room

Thank you for playing, and enjoy the game!

Well done, and thank you. I'm sure Ben304 (my co-author) will be pleased that you enjoyed it too.

I think you might be the first person to finish it - would you like to vote and write a review for it? You might also like to vote for it in the MAGS competition (voting opens tomorrow, I believe) - see http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ac.shtml

Hi Jon,

A few people have pointed this bug out and I'm looking into it now. Sorry for the inconvenience - I hope you had a saved game you were able to go back to.

EDIT: I've now fixed this bug and uploaded v1.02 to the website. You don't need to download the game again - just revert to a saved game (if you have one) or restart and make sure you don't do the same thing as triggered the bug, that is
Spoiler
don't leave the bar before you have done everything you need to there.

Some hints for you:

Hint 1:
Spoiler
He's involved in the scheme, so it would be a good idea to try and use the Memo on him. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

Hint 2:

Hint 3:
Spoiler
What did he say about the Memo?
[close]

Hint 4:
Spoiler
He's got one himself, and it has a block mode.
[close]

Hint 5:
Spoiler
You need to find out how to disable the block.
[close]

Hint 6:
Spoiler
Where might you find out how to do this?
[close]

That should be enough to get you going again... I can't give you any more hints without telling you the actual answer.

Help please:
I got the pen and it  seems like it's all I can do. I have used and talked to the door. I used everything in the screen. I tryed using the pen on everything. Talked to the 2 friends again. Tryed using the Memo on them and both doors. Nothing. What's my next move?

Please use spoiler tags.

OK, but some hints first. There are two things you need to do.

Hint 1:
Spoiler
Who are you there to see?
[close]

Hint 2:
Spoiler
Maybe you should see if the person who are there to see is in.
[close]

Solution:
Spoiler
Knock on the captain's door (bottom right of the screen).

If you've already done that, then:

Hint 1:
Spoiler
Talk to the steward outside the door over and over again, until you get no further response.
[close]

Hint 2:
Spoiler
Talk to Nick and Eve again - their hints change as you progress through the game.
[close]

Hint 3:
Spoiler
How can you persuade the steward to let you out?
[close]

Solution:
Spoiler
Use the Memo on him through the door.

paolo, this IS the hints & tips forum, so hiding the questions is pretty ridiculous. Besides I didn't really spoil anything. It amazes me how you insisted on puttings up hints, even though I asked for a direct answer.
And worse of all, you didn't even read my question well, cause I wrote that I already did what you said!  I tryed knocking on the door and using the memo on it and it did,'t work!
Title: Re: Trance-Pacific
Post by: paolo on Mon 01/10/2007 19:02:36
OK, Nostradamus, a few things...

Yes, you're right, this is the hints and tips forum. However, people looking through this thread don't want to see hints for parts of the game they have not yet reached. That is what spoiler tags are for - they show consideration to other users who are not as far through the game as you might be, even if where you are is pretty much near the start of the game.

I mentioned at the beginning of the thread that I would prefer it if people didn't post solutions. This is the hints and tips forum, not the solutions and walkthroughs forum. Furthermore, someone stuck in the same place as you might prefer a hint as opposed to the solution, hence I posted both. You can always ignore the hints and go straight to the solution.

I did indeed read your question, but there are two doors in the room. You say you have "used and talked to the door", but you didn't say which.

Finally, I think it is rather impolite to ask for help and then to criticise the person who goes to the trouble to give it to you because they didn't do it in the way you wanted and what they said didn't help you. Maybe someone else would like to help you instead.

All I can suggest is that you try something else. There has to be something you haven't yet tried.

Ok Im stuck with the bartender at the door. I was able to block his device, but now I can't seem to be able to do anything apart from hearing his plan over and over again.

Ps well done on winning MAGS and I find this entry the most enjoyable so it would of got my vote anyways.

Any help?
Title: Re: Trance-Pacific
Post by: Nostradamus on Mon 01/10/2007 20:54:33
Yes I did say I tryed both doors:

Quote from: Nostradamus on Sun 30/09/2007 19:49:53
. Tryed using the Memo on them and both doors. Nothing. What's my next move?
Please give a full direct answer, not hints.

Now I understand what you think about spoilers and yes the answers should always be hidden but seriously I basically has done nothing yet in the room, my question didn't spoil anything. And if other people see a question that has already been posted and answered it would prevent them from asking the same question again. But if the question is hidden people will probably not go marking all the spoilers to read the questions. OK, I understand that you also posted hints for other people but me and that is justified. But you can't decide for people to not receive direct answers or solutions if they want to. If I like to get a full direct answer when I gets stuck, not hints, and then go on exploring things myself, that's my right and you can't tell me how to play when stuck. I don't like to get stuck, receive hints, not understand them and continue to be stuck and ask again without progress. That sucks. So I like to reveice a full answer then go exploring and trying things myself. And many are like me. And you can't just declare "only hints will be here, not full answers".

Now then, you playing the offended deciding not to give me hints is kinda over the top and just works against you, don't you want people to play through the game you worked hard on?

So can you or anybody else help me, really help me, with a direct answer to what I need to do next?
everything I did is written there in my original post. So either you forgot something, either I forgot something (but you can see everything I did) or there's a bug;
Title: Re: Trance-Pacific
Post by: paolo on Tue 02/10/2007 08:07:13
Hi Nostradamus,

Sorry if I seemed a bit over the top. Yes, of course I want people to play the game, and I would like to help you or to find out if there is a problem with the game. I know how frustrating it is when you are enjoying a game but nothing you do gets you any further.

I'm not sure exactly what you have and have not done up to this point, and I hope that you haven't found a bug. Here is where I think you should be so far and what should happen if you try these steps again. I'm posting it as a spoiler (direct solution, no hints), because others might not have done all these things yet - please bear with me.

Spoiler

* Speak to door at bottom right of room (Vince should say "The captain's not there... something fishy is going on." because you've already tried it at least once)
* Interact with main door (Vince should say "It's still firmly locked." because you've already tried it at least once)
* Speak to main door repeatedly until you get no further reply (that is, until Vince says "There's no point - he's not going to let us out.")
* Use the Memo on the door on the left of the room. If you have completed the above step, you should be able to hypnotise the steward through the door.
* Speak to Nick. At this point, there will either be a short conversation about Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves if you have not already spoken to Nick at this point, or he will say "What's in the drawer?"
* Check the desk - a drawer should be open.
[close]

Please let me know whether this works for you. If not, you can PM me and I'll arrange to have a look at your savegame.
Title: Re: Trance-Pacific
Post by: Nostradamus on Wed 03/10/2007 18:58:09
OK I did what you said and it worked - the problem was I didn't *repeatedly* talked to the door to outside. I tryed it once or twice, got no response and moved on. And as I see it it's a flawed puzzle because in adventure games it's very rare that you have to to use or talk to the same hotspot several times until it triggers a response or an action. When me and most people play adventures you try something once and twice and if doesn't work you leave it and try other things. Why did you expect people to repeatedly try the same thing? seem like the only way to solve that puzzle without getting help is just by random clicking things again and again because of frustration. Just my two cents.

Anyway now I'm stuck here, please help:
Spoiler
got out of the room, guy is pointing gun at me. Tryed talking to him and the guys and using the memos and all I have in inventory (pen, paper, tape recorder) on all. Nothing work. Seems I might need to reach the fuse box to turn off the lights but I can't. What do I do here?
[close]
Please give a direct answer.

Nostradamus:

I'm glad there wasn't a bug in the end. Note that
Spoiler
Eve and Nick hint that you need to speak to the door again,
[close]
so I think the puzzle is fair.

Note also that
Spoiler
you can't speak to the door until you have interacted with it. This makes sense because this is what you would do in real life - try the door and find it is locked, and then call out to see if anyone can hear you.
[close]

In the corridor:
Spoiler
Talk to the steward. If you run out of things to talk to him about, look at things in the room until you find something to ask him about (a new conversation option will appear).

Hints for those who want them, and a direct answer for Nostradamus (the hints also suggest what to do after that):

Hint 1:
Spoiler
You want to stop the secret operation. The bartender is involved, so stopping him or finding out more information from him is a good idea.
[close]

Hint 2:
Spoiler
What could you use to find out more about what is going on and so stop the operation?
[close]

Hint 3:
Spoiler
The Memo of course, but it won't work on the bartender because he has activated the block mode on his Memo.
[close]

Hint 4:
Spoiler
You need to find some way of overriding the block.
[close]

Hint 5:
Spoiler
Where could you find out how to do this?
[close]

Hint 6:
Spoiler
What's a good way to find out information about any gadget?
[close]

Solution:
Spoiler
Read the manual (that is, look at the manual in the inventory).
[close]

Title: Re: Trance-Pacific

Hints and solution (Nostradamus - I recommend you read hints 5 to 7 before you read the solution, even if it is only to understand why the solution is what it is.)

Hint 1:
Spoiler
Again, the Memo is the key here - if you can somehow interfere with the captain's memory of the operation, that will put an end to it.
[close]

Hint 2:
Spoiler
However, you can't use the Memo on the captain while the bartender is there, because he has a Memo too and so would know what you are doing.
[close]

Hint 3:
Spoiler
You need to find some way of using the Memo on the captain without the bartender being able to see what you are doing.
[close]

Hint 4:
Spoiler
Speak to Eve. She has a hint.
[close]

Hint 5:
Spoiler
Think back to the conversation in the bar in the introduction - what Vince ask Eve about?
[close]

Hint 6:
Spoiler
Vince asked Eve how she did the trick with the glasses and plates.
[close]

Hint 7:
Spoiler
Eve is saying she is planning to do a trick from her show. What prop will she need?
[close]

Solution:
Spoiler
Give Eve the glass.
[close]

It should be fairly obvious what to do after that. If you get stuck after doing what is fairly obvious, then:
Spoiler
speak to Eve, and pay attention to her hint.
[close]

Post by: paolo on Thu 11/10/2007 07:49:20
sholson, I'm not sure how far you've got, but here are some hints. Remember it's a good idea to speak to Eve and Nick to get help, although they might not have much to say in this room (the further you go through the game, the less help they tend to offer, but what they say will almost always be useful).

Hint 1:
Spoiler
Have you looked in all the containers?
[close]

Hint 2:
Spoiler
Report back to Grace.
[close]

Hint 3:
Spoiler
You'll get one of two responses from Grace at this point - pay attention to what she says as it will suggest what you should do next.
[close]

If you've got further than this already, feel free to post again (using spoiler tags, please - see the first posting in the thread).

Sorted.  Cheers Ben.. no need to worry, the only bug was the one eating away at my sense of logic.

I sent Ben a copy of the save file, and he got back to me saying all I had to do was:

Spoiler
Talk to the bartender and then to eve...
I had tried talking to both of them but obviously not in that order... haha...

I feel a bit silly.  But only a bit.

At least you got it now.  ;D

I must admit, I try such weird things in adventures, and forget to try the simplest things.

I have done everything I need to do in the first room, but I can't get Nick to impersonate the captain's voice to open the door.

The tags are [*hide] and [*/hide] (without the asterisks) but you probably realise that now.

Here's a hint...

If you want Nick to impersonate the captain, he needs to know what he is meant to say.

I need to light the secret room.  Have looked in all the boxes, tried to leave the room, and tried to do something with the ladder.  It seems I need to find a light bulb but I don't see one in the room.

It's no wonder this game has won the game of the month thing. You deserved it. I don't know much abouo design and stuff but this looks very good to me. The graphics are very smooth, just like old LucasArt games did. I don't actually need any honts, it;s pretty plain sailing so far but I was just looking for a place to say thank you for this uality entertainment. Good luck with any further projects!

I enjpoyed the game very much, but one thing bothers me, and that is the more-forced-than-necessary linearity. For example it makes no sense that
Spoiler
you can only look behind the planks after you discovered the panel, or that searching the room apparently doesn't mean "look behind things", so the janitor has to remember a box is off before it is examined, i.e., I wanted to look behind both objects even before the game allowed me to, and for example mentally ticked the planks as "not important".
[close]

Also, red herrings are okay and necessary, but
Spoiler
then they should make sense, not like the stairs that you couldn't get because of a bunch of EMPTY boxes that were in the way.
[close]
This frustrated the hell out of me.

That said, it was a well-executed plot, excellent graphics, nice puzzles (although they relied a little much on "do again what failed earlier") and a certainly original concept. I missed at least rudimenary sounds or music, though.

I've tried that and I can't get anything to work.  So far I have:

Spoiler

gotten the dictaphone and shown it to Eve.  gotten the code and shown it to Nick. All he says is "I think it probably is".  I talked to the door until the steward is done.  I talked to the intercom and used all the codes including the right one which got a response from the steward.  I hypnotised the steward and got two memories, neither of which did anything.  I tried hypnotising Nick for fun but that didn't do anything and I tried using the dictaphone on Nick which didn't do anything.  How do I get Nick to impersonate the captain so  I can get out of this freaking room?  Does it all have to be done in a specific order?

Just talk to Nick on his own. The ideal order would have been: Try code on device. Try dictaphone on device. Talk to nick. Show nick the code.

Nope.  This is what I get (in this order as you suggested):

Spoiler

Tried code on device and get the appropriate response from the steward.
Tried dictaphone and device and get:  Why would I do that?
Tried on Dictaphone on Eve and got a recorded message that got a response from the device.
Spoke to Nick and got:  We should be able to use what you found in the drawer.
Used code on Nick and got:  I don't know what you want me to do with it.

This is getting very frustrating.  I've tried it almost a dozen times now in just as many combinations

Thanks for the comments, Tamanegi. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I'm sorry if some parts of the game seemed awkward.

I think you might have seen a few things differently from how they were intended:
Spoiler

* Grace suggests that they search the boxes, not the room - hence it makes no sense to Vince to look behind the planks until later on when they need a light source. If he'd found the torch too early, it would have made the stepladder/light bulb red herring irrelevant.
* The boxes are heavy even though they are empty - I think the ones on Vince's side of the ladder are crates, and the ones behind (in front as we see them) are boxes, which he is not able to reach. The one in front of the panel has to be light because it needs to be moved by the bad guys.
[close]

Music and sound would have been great, but I had trouble getting music to work and by the time I was thinking of music, it was close to the deadline.

Your feedback will help us to make the next game better. This was our first!

Crazy

The first room is one of the hardest puzzles in the game. Don't worry - most of what comes later is easier!

Poor thing. Her memory must be a bit off. Such a pity you lack a memory tamporing device as to my knowledge.

I found it to be one of the easiest, if not the (easiest) part of the game.

Gaye

Have you tried...

1.
Spoiler
Talking to Eve and Nick - they might be able to give you a clue or help you in some other way. Sometimes the only way to move the game on is to talk to them.

2.

What have you got in your inventory so far?
Title: Re: Trance-Pacific

In my inventory I have:

Spoiler

one pen that I took from the desk
a piece of paper with a code on that I showed to Eve and Nick and used on the device on the wall
a dictaphone machine that I showed to Eve and it set off the device on the wall
and I have some kind of a book

I have talked to everybody over and over again and used "M" on the steward for two memories.

I did and Nick says, We must be able to use what you found in the drawer.  So I showed him the code and he says to show it to Eve and then I used it on the device and got a response from the Steward.

Gaye, have you...

1.
Spoiler
shown the Dictaphone to Eve, so that she explains to you how it works, and then played the message recorded on it?
[close]

2.
Spoiler
hypnotised the steward so that he will reveal how to open the door?
[close]

3.
Spoiler
spoken to the steward again to get him to reveal this information?
[close]

4.
Spoiler
spoken to both Eve and Nick?
[close]

5.
Spoiler
heard Nick imitate the recording?
[close]

If so, there's only one thing you're missing:

Hint:
Spoiler
Nick can imitate the captain's voice. You have the combination. The combination has to be read out in the captain's voice. Nick would be able to do this, and so all you have to do is to (see answer below if you still can't work it out)...
[close]

Answer:
Spoiler
...show Nick the combination. Note that this works only AFTER you have done the other things above, otherwise Nick won't know why you are showing it to him.
