Other Worlds - Knife

This is REALLY embarrassing.  I'm stuck right at the start of Other Worlds.  The Walkthrough says there should be a knife in the bedroom, but I just don't see one.  Am I going blind, or is there something wrong?  Am I using an old walkthorugh, and this is an updated, knifeless version of the game?  Or am I just very VERY stupid?

The knife is on the table in the lower right corner. Maybe tuning your contrast/brightness might help?....

BTW you were sort of right about changing my display settings, but it wasn't brightness/contrast.  It turns out that when I'm, running a game that isn't in a Window, it loses the left and right edges off the edge of the screen.  I'd never even noticed it before.

I've adjusted the display, and now I can see everything in the game.  Even if my normal Windows desktop now looks strangely skinny!
