CALSOON I - stuck at beginning

I am stuck in the bushes- walkthru says 'wait for inventor and throw a gold coin in front of the bush'. I have tried that for more than 2 hours but I get message 'timing is the key'. I can talk to him but cannot get him to pick up coins.  Is this a bug or am I just stupid. Is there a special place to throw the coin? I did Calsoon II without trouble but Calsoon I, well I just cannot get started.

Also is there a way to get (walk, talk, look, use, inventory) on top of the screen as in Calsoon II?

As the inventor approaches the tree throw the coin just to the left of the tree in front of calsoon then you can pinch his belt
