Rapstar 1.5 Updated 18.06.2005
« on: 10 Jun 2005, 02:58 »
Rapstar 1.5 is -as you guess-  based on hiphop.Especially i took inspiration from Eminem's movie: 8 mile. The character you controlled is Feminem  ;) He try to beat his challengers in freestyle rap battle.

The game based on turn-based rap battle.Like Street Fighter, but we won't fight with hands, just with mouth  :)  Other example to define type of game is Monkey Kombat in Monkey Island 4. Player will push some key buttons and tries to defend or attack with rap.AI will respond player. There are still some backgrounds to design. No sound effects made so far.i could say  Rapstar 1.5
is going to be finished in 1 week

14.06.2005 -- Added 2 new screens
17.06.2005 -- Graphics:%95
                       Music: %100
                       Sound: %100
                       Scripting: %40
Due to long scripting, relaese date delayed to 20.06.2005

Almost all rap sucks, unless mixed with hard rock and Tom Morello.

Oh but the second screen looks ok, The first and third a bit of a let down imo. I think if you're going to steal the ron sprites you could atleast keep their respective names. Or are these their 'rappin' names, brudda?

C'mon? Almost all rap sucks? I'd say the same for rock. It's all noise and screaming to me.

Heheh....I think the names are parodies of real rapper names. Proximity, if you want some more suggestions:

You know ... I was sitting around yesterday thinking, "What does AGS need?"  And the first thing that immediately came to mind was, RAP.  It's really the missing piece of the AGS puzzle.

Rap battles are about as entertaining as a tax audit, but hey, it's your game.  I guess I would be interested to see how you're going to work the AI, but if you're going to finish it in a week I'm guessing the AI isn't going to be that advanced.

Flukeblake - your first post in this thread was pointless, use proper English, and stop acting as my proxy.  I'm capable of doing the job.

Almost all rap sucks

Couldn't agree more.

C'mon? Almost all rap sucks? I'd say the same for rock.

Couldn't agree more.

There is FAR more commercial rock which is listenable.  Since rap/hiphop went "gansta" it ALL sucks.

NOW ATTENTION
No more off-topic posts.  If you don't have something to say about the game, don't post!!  Any more posts like this fine example:

yo my brother in da hood let's go rap with some homies dude, then we'll go rob a bank with our guns bro den we'll get hard on the floor wit some bitches now let's holla my gun is my only friend now let's go to rapstar and start rappin gangsta. :=

... will be deleted without warning.  Er ... actually ... you've just been warned ;)

ON TOPIC

anyway, i think this game is actually quite a nice idea. Although I'm not a crap music fan, i know that many people are, and this game could have a wide audience. If you can script this so that it works nicely, go for it!

The idea is pretty nice and has some potential, but it all depends on the realisation. And actually, when I look at the screens, I don't get very convinced that it will get good. Otherwise, you could really be just very impatient in the graphics department but at the same time some kind of scripting god.
However, I would suggest you to set this game in the RON universe when you already use the character sprites. Not only would it would be a bit irritating otherwise, but also because RON games get very rare in the last time. I have the idea that it would be nice to see some RON characters battling each other in that rap contest (like the chicken against the Baron, or Davy Jones against Captain Mostly, something that comes to mind spontaneously) to demonstrate the dislike against each other.
Hm, whatever.

Oh, and about rap as music: It's true that 99% of it is shit nowadays, but I think Outkast and Beastie Boys stand out with quality in the mainstream.

Wow guys, i don't want to be part of rap vs metal-rock battle. Calm down. This is just a game  :) Ok, i love rap and you know rap battle is very good idea for game.i see some of you like screens and some of not. i am not a graphmaster, i am doing my best. i am really working hard to make AI perfect. May be AI will not be perfect. You will decide it. if you want to play a game based on rap, this is your game.

By the way, i red readme file of Ron characters before starting Rapstar. There is no restririction to use characters. However, i will  definitely put RON Entertainment in credits.

I can agree with Ozzie. The idea is nice. Prox....I know that it is not my place to tell you how to make your game, but CONCENTRATE ON THE DIALOGUE! Don't take inspiration from Escape from Monkey Island, play Monkey Island 1 and 3, and get some ideas from there. I'd love the idea of a rap battle game

i want to make clear gameplay. There is no dialog system. instead, when you press a key (i.e A) character will say something like "yeah".And pressing S would be "come on".You can also make combo. if AI can not resist your moves, you will win the round. Combo system is not completed. i am working on it  :)

I've been planning a game about rapping for a while (im not a huge fan, but i've no gripes with the music). Yours looks pretty smart, and i like the idea for teh combo system. And your stage scene has a very similar layout to one id prepared... strange, though mine is a smaller resolution.

Is there going to a be a story or any traditional adventure game puzzels? Or quite simply just rap battles?

in fact, you should realize name of game is Rapstar 1.5.That means there is Rapstar 1. Unfortunately, its language is Turkish. That's why i didn't mention Rapstar 1 here.As you said, there is traditional puzzles and story in Rapstar 1.

Turkish rappers very liked that game and still demand me to make its second version with sounds of famous rapper "Ceza" in Turkey. i am trying to reach Ceza and take his right to use his sounds and beats in the game.

i think if someone can take licences of famous international rappers (Eminem,50 Cent,....) and make a rap battle game with them, that game would be very attractive for people who love rap music.

Anyway, you should probably ask me why i didn't make Rapstar 1 English version. Answer is simple, i don't have enough English to make Freestyle lyrics. Turkish verison was easy to me but i don't think i can write English lyrics. i can't handle rhymes.

if somebody decide to make Rapstar 1 in English, i can send him story, scenario, puzzles.Rest of it is up to you  :)

Rapstar 1.5 combo system is enjoyable and hard to script. i didn't have mistakes so far.But if i have, i will let you know

I don't like rap much either and although it's kinda funny due to parodying real rap "artists" names , I agree that there are going to be people who normally hate rap who will like it and if they have a sense of humour , rap lovers who will enjoy it. On the other side , like somebody else stated rap lovers might hate it because it takes licenses with real rapper's names. *shrugs*  I usually only listen to rap by guys like Will Smith and Beastie Boys. It's funny , I know I can be quite a butt when it comes to the subject of "White" rappers but I love "you have to fight for your right to party" and some other songs by BB.

"I'd say the same for rock. It's all noise and screaming to me."
Huh? You've never heard of Queen and other guys? It's not all screaming and noise.  Bohemian Rhapsody , November Rain , Under Pressure , ect. all qualify as Rock , right?  There's tons of rock out there that isn't "noise and screaming". I know you stated you were joking afterwards but I'm just saying.
I'm a music fanatic , especially a rock lover so if I seem a little touchy about it that's why. Heh.

I think that such game would be

* Interesting to see
* Quite boring to play after first 5 minutes

So, yeah. Make it and we play und rate it.

But--
I somehow find flaming specific music genre waaay more offensive, than - let's say - someone calling me a facist or something like that... And I'm - as most Estonians are - with "fat skin" (very very rarely offended by anything)!
Also, I don't give a crap neither about rap or rock*. I have no side here.

Leave the tastes alone, people... No, wait... shut the fuck up.

*2 rap songs, 3 rock songs against 720 trance/house songs in my playlist :D

Hey Queen. It was a joke. I didn't mean it. It was something akin to the statement "All rap sucks", somewhere up there. I realise there is a lot of good rock. I love it! As well as rap. I just find it silly that everyone has to divide up into camps with "I'm only a rap lover" or "I'm a pure rock fanatic". There is a lot of great stuff in both, as well as every other genre of music, and it's missing out on a lot to generalise by saying "Oh, this whole genre of music sucks".
Whew....that's far enough off-topic though. Someone should make a thread about this in general so as all these strong feelings can be aired.

if you like to see Rapstar 1, you can download it from here:
   http://rapidshare.de/files/1153453/Rapstar.zip.html
You won't understand the language, so i am giving walkthrough:
When demo finish, take the camera from table.Exit home and give camera to guy with brown coat (in the street). He will tell you how to make a fake certificate to join rapbattles. Go to bookstore and talk to the guy.Look at your inv. You will see pink carton.Use your pencil on carton.Use picture on written carton.Than give it to guy with brown coat. He will push a seal it and give back to you. Now you can join the battles but you can't win and paradox will occur.in order to win battles you must get microphone from red t-short guy. To beat him, follow this order:
"sen ise gozumde..........."
"mumya gibisin........."
if you choose these options you will beat him and he will give you silver microphone. Now you can join and win battles. But if you want to have more scores, use silver mic on him and if you can beat him you will get golden mic. if you lose you will lose silver mic. i dont want to tell how you can get golden mic. if you play and stuck there PM me and i will help. Anyway, even with silver mic. you can win rap battles. Go to Rapstar building.Show your certificate to bodyguard. Once you are in, it's kind of ending sequence. Enjoy, watch the battles :)

i just gave the link you to have an idea what Rapstar 1 look like. wish i could translate it to English  :(

Okay, for clarity.

Rap that is mainstream these days sucks.  I love the 'sound' of rap.  The beats, the tempo, etc.  The lyrics are shit.

On the whole I dislike rap greatly.  It's a personal preference.  It's gone almost entirely "gansta" rap which is negative, derogatory, and generally worthless.  This is, of course, just my opinion.

Rap music is very attractive. You can lose yourself in lyrics

** snickers **

I know I just go to a special place when I hear the verse, "I love bitches, thug bitches, shy bitches, rough bitches, don't matter you my bitches" from the cleverly titled JayZ song "Who you Wit II"

It's really sad that kids (of ANY color) look up to a man like that.  Pathetic really.

Okay ...
