I don't know to what I do owe the honor of starting the new blitz, but here it is  ;)

Let's go shopping!

I want you to draw a shop, either from inside or outside. It can sell anything from clothes, vegetables to voodoo supplies, whatever you feel like.

Size and color restrictions: Anything that AGS can handle.

I hope this time there will be more entries. Come on folks, let's get this competition back to life!

Voting has started!

The categories:

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites,
including appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

Voting ends on 10th of October.

Idea - Ben.  I'd like to see an adventure game where you had to buy an item to be able to use your inventory.

I'd like Neutron's more if the shop was a more generic seafood store with more to look at.  Yarooze's idea of a flower shop just isn't all that interesting to me, honestly.

Atmosphere - Neutron.  The muted greens really sell the background.

I like Ben's color choice but there isn't much happening in the image to evoke atmosphere.  More buildings or walkways might help give it more depth.  Yarooze's image is also a bit sparse and I don't get a sense of atmosphere from what little is seen.

Composition - Neutron.  There's a lot going on in the image even if it isn't very exciting (just tentacles).  Some variety in the tentacles would really pick this image up (or make it a seafood shop with all sorts of different things like massive crab claws, a bucket of fish eyes, etc).

I liked Ben's but it's very desolate, as is yarooze's.

Functionality - Yarooze.  In terms of functionality, there's plenty of room in this background for character sprites without worrying about placement.

Both Ben's and Neutron's backgrounds would work fine as well, though making a walkbehind with the sketchy nature of Neutron's background for the cashier (unless it's on a separate layer) could be difficult.  The angle of Neutron's image would also make it somewhat difficult to place the character in a good position for dialog with a cashier, while the angle of Ben's shop would make this easier.

Technique - Neutron.  The background itself is nice to look at if somewhat unexciting.  I think the best way to improve it would be to expand what the shop offers and make a variety of strange things for the player to look at.

Ben's background is clean but there's very little going on aside from a path and a shop, and while it gets the job done, it's not extremely interesting.  Yarooze's background is the same, really.

Is this competition really so unpopular now? 3 entries and 1 vote?  :-\
I can remember the better time.  :'(

2 ProgZmax: I wanted to show the Game Boy atmosphere.  ::)  ;D

I know it's the very same ProgZ posted but my decisions just are the same and that's why I won't comment my choices. I wouldn't really add something to ProgZ' comments....

Trying to make my first AGS game.

Dualnames

Idea - Yarooze.

Well, obviously, a gameboy look-like background isn't something you see too often.

Atmosphere - Yarooze.
It takes me back to my childhood.

Composition - Ben.
I just think that your tablet is doing well, as you are, and well, I really love it

Functionality - Ben.
Well, I don't really think it would have any trouble putting characters or objects, Yarooze was a close runner.

Technique - Neutron.

Well, it feels like ..can't really tell, but sure looks very good.

Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Idea - Neutron The idea is beyond crazy - I love it!

Atmosphere - Neutron The drawing style and the choice of colors add a lot to the atmosphere

Composition - Ben The lines in the background create a lot of depth.

Functionality - Yarooze Clear walkable areas and exits. Ben's is just close after that but Neutron's walkable areas are way too small.

Technique - That's the hardest one. Every entry has good technique according to the chosen style. My vote goes to Neutron

Ok, so Neutron is the winner, congratulations!
Please start a new competition.

Thanks to all participants!
