Are these backgrounds acceptable?

Hi

I'm experimenting with manipulation of resolutions and color depths.

They are meant to reflect the 60's during flower power, psychedelic era and based on criminal activity in the USA.

these images are 320 x 200, game set at 32bit, d3d.

Do these images look acceptable? Are they hard or easy on the eyes? If they are ok how could they be improved etc etc?

Thank you for your comments.

So these are photos you manipulated and slightly painted over or how do I have to imagine the production process?

I guess these are two different ways you tried? Because the first image looks much more pixelated and less detailed than the second one.

In the first image I like the color palette and the shabby looking brick stone pillars, but I can't make out, if the wall has windows, diplay cases or if these are classic deco elements of a subway station. Also the sign stands out too much. It needs to be more integrated into your graphic style.

In the second image the red-brownish filter gives it an interesting atmosphere. If you clean up the rough parts on the right half, it could be nice, but the character sprite(s) should get a similar filter/lighting for not standing out too much.

Yes, they are very acceptable, both in their own way (I see that you reduced the color count even more in the first one).

that said, in both, you have a slight contrast problem. After reducing color count you might want to decide to boost the brightness or slightly change the tint in some areas, so that the eye can separate the areas of the scene more easily.
For example in the first background I'd recommend to use full black only behind the pillers, which means that the pillars wouldn't be any darker than "dark gray" at most. for the same reasons, maybe you could make the ground slightly brigter.
Same thing goes for the second background: maybe make the ground brighter so that the eye reads the scene more easily.

Cheers guys

The top image is actually a train station and the grey horizontal line near the bottom is the platforms edge. A train is seen arriving at some point..

I really like the top pic, nice pixelation and atmosphere

O yeah OK that makes sense!
Maybe add one or two vertical lines in the black area to make it more obvious? But it's fine as it is.

The bottom picture is driving me insane mentally because the beam that runs down the wall stops once it hits the floor, but the beam that runs across the ceiling enters the wall near the middle of the room.

Basically it seams as though the beam that runs down the wall should stop in the middle of the floor, not against wall.

Hi Nicky,

I have to agree after looking at it more closely...

I have made a few amendments.

In-game shot

cheers

Glad I could help. My brain is now returning to normal. *except for the damage that was already there* (laugh)
