General Discussion / Re: StoryGen is back!
Sun 16/07/2006 18:21:01
It's a lot of fun, but there are a few things that suck:
1) There is no time overlap handling -stuff. I thought I wrote a continuation to X, but after the story appeared fully, my continuation had shifted to after Y. It's not hard to add a some sort of check there.
2) The story is complete at the moment - and what, we have to wait until you manually move it elsewhere?
3) The archives are stored as individual lines. This makes reading them hard.

But hey, great work!

I want to see it so bad! Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are the two screenwriters I admire the most. In fact, www.screenplayer.com could be a good reference to any adventure game plot creator. Anyway, I'm a bit surprised you'd give it only four starts, according to the hype it'd be worth five and a half! The first one was, imho, one of the best movies ever. There was just something catchy about it all.

And: you are lucky to pay only six dollars, it's 7-9 euros in here!

This was an amazingly great game. I'm left speechless here! As a player I just got so sucked into the world of the game. It's so cynical, so nihilistic, so real. I've completed it three times now, and I'm just starting the fourth round.  :o

Wow, it felt awesome to actually SLEEP last night! That's something we really didn't do at lapaset. Anyway, here are some photos I took. My personal favourite has to be this one! Who knew showell could be so mindblowing and interesting at the same time!

I just played the awesomest demo ever and was astounded by the greatness of it all.

It was teh greatness!

Me & visy didn't drop Inkoddi off at Lahti, as originally planned, but took him all the way to Tampere instead, where he eventually got on to a bus. (I believe). As we were heading to Tampere, we stopped to pick up two russian hitch-hikers with us. Do always pick up hitch-hikers, especially the ones with towels. It's the humane thing to do.

I'll post a few pictures as soon as I have time to go through the piles of photos.

The time flew past surprisingly fast.

I wish I was allowed to leave the countryÃ,  :'(
Just leave, don't tell anyone! Unless, of course, it's a governmental thing. You can't leave the country under parole, can you?

You lucky bastards!
Don't worry, I can send the famous bavarians Jürgen and Günther to meet up with you!

I'm quite sure Lapaset will create frightening stories to be told by the camp fires. "It was a dark and stormy night, as Haddas took out his machete and introduced us to the Great Lamb of Death." :-X

I just HAVE to come here, missing this would be disastrous. I mean, how long has this been planned, like 10 years or so? 1st of July is a great day to start the gathering but how long will it last? A week? A month? And is anyone with a half-empty car going from Tampere? And HOORAY for the XBOX!

This was a hauntingly great game! The characters were amazingly lively, (if that phrase can be used here). The whole atmosphere of the world just sucked me in. So... I just had to create some fan art. Thanks to scourge for one those.

I'm somewhat constantly thinking of whatever happened to the other characters after Mortia left. I'm looking forward to your next game!

Oh my dear God! You are planning a Lapaset (Should be TUMPUT) meeting 8 months in advance? Well, I guess that's enough time to work of those demos.

Anyway, despite my lack of activeness on these forums, I'm more than keen about coming there. And considering that I live in Finland, I might actually come! I really can't say anything about the date, but considering our international guests, July seems like a good option.

So if you want to chat about any of these areas, but don't have anything to show, this is the thread for you.

In another attempt of integrating into this AGS-cult, I just a few minutes ago thought: "Let me pour some of my plot writing excellence into these projects of yours" and started to go through the critics lounge. I tried to find a story that I could read and enjoy and give some ideas about. But I couldn't find anything but vague ideas of how the intro cutscene would look like and what'd be the protagonists goal.

Something like: "A guy in a medieval setting realises he has to save the kingdom from an evil dragon! In the end he manages to do this with great intelligence and everyone thinks he is a gret hero." Where's the story in that?

Don't people write down specific details? Describe the characters and the twists? Include the whole three-act structure? Or are people too afraid of publishing this sort of detailed information, because it would ruin their games or something? I'd love to read and criticise a good story, there's just no possibilities.

So, basically you want to create a fantasy story set in a sci-fi world? There's many ways to do that, but that four-crystals vs. family-killed isn't the most original of ideas. Coming up with a game idea can be bloody hard, but even harder is to turn the idea into a complete story :P Once you've created what you think is a solid story, check it against http://www.wordplayer.com/columns/wp05.Death.to.Readers.html (Checklist A and C, in particular).

Good luck and lots of creativity with that story, then! :D

my contribution to this thread is to point out that as soon as I read 'ice cream cravings' I went to the fridge and took out a Carte D'or banana chocolate icecream. It is gone, now.
Now that's smart! Having three flavours of ice cream at your fridge at all times just eliminates the need for expensivve 24h shops. So, Kinoko, next time you go shopping, buy as MUCH everything as you can carry home. Then deep-freeze all that. Now, when you wake up at 3am with a sudden urge to eat mozzarella pizza, you don't have to wait those tiresome 45 minutes! Just open your fridge!

That does, however, need a certain skill of buying more than you immediately need. That can be hard.

Another possibility would be to _stop_ eating ice cream and other sugary, fatty foods. Spend a couple of months eating just carrots and rye bread and you would even THINK of wanting ice cream in the middle of the night. It just works.

You might want to start with coloring the walls.

Making graphics is no easy task, so it might take a while until you develop enough skills to create perfection. Until that, you might want to cheat ;D Instead of straight lines that give away perspective flaws, it could be better to use free-drawn, non-straight lines. Creating a bg a day will soon give results even you couldn't wait.

So, back to drawing board. Practice makes perfect, etc.

Well, I tried this. Nothing happened.

I downloaded the mac port thing and with great success managed to put it in the applications folder. Then I downloaded "The Great Stroke-off" and changed the GSO.exe to GSO.agsgame. Then I ctrl-clicked it, chose open with, chose the ags run-time thing and pushed OPEN.

And then nothing.

I tried it five times more and it didn't even say "Sorry, no dice". Is it something that I'm doing wrong or what?

I'm running 10.3.9 with the latest updates.

Future is always good. It's rather easily lends itself to great scenes, themes, moods etc. Protagonist as an underground police is also a good bit, you have a plethora of great moments within this setting.

However, this is a mere setting. As you said, it's a concept for a concept. There is, at the moment, no plot. Once you've realised that a great setting is not the same as a great story, you can move on. (But hey, great setting is vital! Think of ghostbusters, guys busting ghosts CAN'T be bad)

What happens is your decision and yours alone, but I'd go for the infiltration story ;D I can't but imagine the scenes where the player has to commit a crime for a greater good. And in the end, there's duel with the Ultimately Bad Guy.

Make sure though, that if this is your first game, you don't start with anything too ambitious.

It's not horror in the werewolf&vampires -style, but somehow I think it doesn't matter.

Quite a lot has been said and written about GUIs. They are often said to be the thing that makes or breaks the game, so it's really good that you give thought to your GUI.

I love GUIs. Still, I don't think there is such thing as "the perfect GUI". What you need depends quite a lot on your games style and theme. The GUI you described is quite okay for comedic, dialogue-driven games. (or so I'd think). Indiana Jones -games wouldn't work with that.

Adding more verbs means adding more interactions. It means more work, more coding. It means smaller chances to complete your game. If this is your first game I recommend using that 2-action GUI (I actually like that quite a lot).

Hmm.

The BEST solution is to think of a totally new way to think of GUIs. Something, that has never been done before. That's what I've been trying to do and I'll be releasing a sample of my work at the RELEASE SOMETHING day. (hype, hype!)

Uh, yeah. I hope I didn't answer you anything.

This seems really good. How much progress have you made? When will the full game be released? How long have already spent time on this?

Oh, the questions!
