Critics' Lounge / shading and character design
Wed 27/10/2010 11:19:53
I have made this character for 2 reasons:
1)I need it for a game I am helping my nephew to make.
2)I needed something to practice shading.

Honestly im rather happy with it, it's better than a lot of other stuff I have made.

that yellow lump is the light source.

C&C please

ok so i wasn't sure where else i could go with the sprite so i decided i would try to do a front view of it

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

so how is it?

I know i really need to work on my shading

im reasonably happy with the legs its the arms and head i feel dont look right.
yes the head isnt shaded at all thats because it looks better unshaded than how it did when i shaded.

Sorry I have taken wayyyy too many liberties with your sprite but maybe it gives you new ideas on where to take it.

Ok you did do a lot ;D

agree with warm highlights and cool shadows. Although I personally hate dithering XD but it's just my opinion

yeah i dont really like dithering, its always seemed to complicated.

The warmness is good maybe a bit to dark though, and he seems a bit menacing.
His is a peacable race one devoted to the persuit of knowledge.

But on the other hand the menacing nature could be aplicable to an anti-hero or villain.

how many colours should a sprite generaly have?

thanks SpacePaw. did you touch the outline or does it just look a bit different because of the better shading?

Also is the general outline good or is it well...rubbish?

I would like to say thankyou for what you said it made me completely change the way i was thinking.

Back story: he is a lizard type alien that has crash landed on an alien planet and is trying to build an interstellar teleportation device to get back home. He is 1,456,783 years old his race lives for millenia and to pronounce his name it would take a thousand years.

so how is it now?

once again thankyou for your aid Oliwerko

P.S I just read my post and it seems a bit sarcastic i did not mean for it to sound like that i am actually very grateful for what you said.

Critics' Lounge / im back and heres a sprite
Thu 17/06/2010 15:29:34
I'm back! Though I don't think anyone really would have noticed I was gone.

If you are wondering where I was, I was taking exam's and revising.

With all but one exam behind me I thought "I should get back onto my project."
So i turned the pc and looked into my files where all my stuff is stored away nice and neatly and... all of my files were corrupt. turns out that nasty virus a few weeks ago got into 'em.

So I decided I would just spend 10 minutes quickly making a sprite so that I could put something in the folder.

It came out rather well, at least that's my opinion. So i thought i would put it up for a critique.

So what do you think?

how do i put up zoomed in views?

and is 5 colours to simple?

Thanks in advance ;D

Seeing as we have gone retro lemme take you back to the arcade.

gauntlet how many of you played it?

@DeadSuperHero again i never really liked that sort of battle format that chrono trigger uses, i like the shining force system because you have more tactics, or at least you do when i play.

@Peder thats a nice collection you've got there, some really nice games.

@Radiant just looking at planescape torment, it kinda looks like baldur's gate another good game.

WOW THAT WAS CRAZY FAST!

i never got around to playing fantasy star, the main reason i am playing through Shining Force 2 is because of memory's from when i was 5 and started playing it.

i'll be sure to have a go at fantasy star, i know my dad has it in some box, somewhere.

Edit: it was right at the top of the box but dads got in japanese and i can only find roms PS1 in japanese :'(

Edit2: i just got the rom for PS2 i tried it upto the first battle and, no i dont like the battle system i prefer the SF system

Let me tell you a story.

At the end of my road there used to be a little old house.
In that house lived this little old Chinese man.

Every week i would go and help him with little odd jobs he had.
Every week he would make me a sandwich to say thank you for my hard work.

That sandwich was the greatest sandwich i have ever had.
To make this sandwich he would make noodles completely from scratch.
He would make an omelette containing: these noodles, green peppers, red peppers, jalapeños, sweet corn, tomatoes and a few other vegetables that i can no longer remember.

He would then make eggy bread(you know bread dipped in egg then fried) using bread he had made himself.
He would then put the omlete in the eggy bread with 3 different types of cheese.
He would then grill it.

Then he would place in front of me the plate with the greatest sandwich on earth on it.

Never have i tasted a sandwich so good and i doubt i ever will.

@InCreator I think mine is more likely to make em' puke.

i would like help in how to approach it both artistically and technically.

Sat 01/05/2010 18:16:39
well 2 really.

1) what is the resolution of nelly cootalot? i need to know for an idea i just had.
2) how would i go about drawing a silhouette of a character in the style of broken sword? i cant remember the which one but i have a pick i can post if needed.

a lil bit of extra info is that you will play as the silhouette character and as you progress in the game you gain detail and colour.

Thanks in advance

@mods You can just rip it from youtube using any number of programs check out cnet download for programs to do so
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-YouTube-to-MP3-Converter.htm
thats the one i use its good enough for what i want it to do and it rips the youtube vid's sound into an mp3 so no messing about with other programs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpkymfmYFck
and thats the song i believe you are asking about.
I'm listening to it, its really good

Ooo! Ooo! Ive got a question!

there was this old game for the GBA i used to play, but the name was in japanese and i lost ages ago.
I only remember a few of things about it:
1) you played a young man living with his mother who's father died(?)
2)all you have to remember your father is an amulet
3)when you get to a certain age(the age you are in the game) there is this sort of ritual where you give up something close to you, in this case the amulet, answer some questions and a creature is summoned to be your companion.
4)there were a few different ones that could appear the only one i can remember is this kangaroo with red boxing gloves that could perform lightning attacks.
5)you, as do all young men/women, enter a tournament to get a scholarship as a smith.
6)it is based in a sort of pok'e'mon-esque(game boy versions, you know that sort of birds-eye view) view point when you are wandering around town.
7) when you go into a battle it goes all beatem up.
8)you can collect materials(ores and the likes) and craft weapons for you to battle with.
9)there were a few different weapons you could craft such as: these calw l;ike drills that sit over your firsts, different types of swords(broad, short, long), axes(great, small) and spears.

I know it was long and half opf it may have made no sense.

if anyone recognises the game please tell me what its called.

ThankYou
