I think the reason is because I have a non-genuine copy of the game and you have 'online-mode=true' or something similar set in server.properties (thus refusing connections from non-genuine clients).
I've never played Minecraft and I wanted to try it out before I buy it. I heard the multiplayer is the most exciting mode. Nevermind, I'll play solo for a short time and then come back after I buy it. If it's as good as they say it should be very soon

Oh it's very worth it. I had a pirated copy of it but I bought it soon after. Best buy ever. Based on the amount of time spent playing it's probably the cheapest game I've ever owned.

Not sure if a new world is required; I was able to update my (personal) worlds without any problems.

I was wondering, how the new block types (like quartz ores) will be incorporated to the existing world. Will they only present on newly generated areas?

It's all about context. I think anything that has to do with preventing or saving someone from being raped is ok. But as soon as you make "Rapey raperson: The point and dick surprise sex game" some line is probably crossed and there will be a public reaction to it. In short, rape is bad and it isn't to be glorified in any way.
