I wanted to announce that the great people of the Monkey Island World Forum have worked on a translation of my little game into Italian and am happy to announce that this version is available very soon for those who prefer Italian over English!

They will post it in the AGS Site very soon!

Damn, I thought that would be harder... 8-0

Yap, Spalovač Mrtvol, aka the Cremator. A great Czechoslovak movie from '69.

Congrats Aqala, it's your turn.

As a prize:  (laugh) If you speak Czech or Spanish, here's the movie:

unfortunately I couldn't find a version with English subs (though I remember there was one online). (wtf)

Pusher II ?

To hedge my bets: might also be Pusher or Pusher III?

(wtf)

Okay, so I fixed the thing Shadow pointed out above (thx for the info).

Due to a logical problem with how I used a button I changed the button "Pick up" to "Get/Search" and hope this will settle that issue. The new button looks quite crappy though, since it didn't really fit with normal writing. But better to have a crappy button than some things that don't make much sense, right? :D

Thx for giving me feedback and I'm happy that some people actually seem to enjoy this a bit :)

Hints & Tips / Re: One Rainy Day
Wed 03/10/2012 15:41:41
Hi Shadow,

thanks for playing the game :)
Concerning the hints. Did you find it not reasonable to

Spoiler

"pick up" under bed several times, until you have a hair brush in the inventory
[close]

or

Spoiler

clean the keyboard
[close]

or

Spoiler

put the potato chips in front of the hamster
[close]

?
I have to admit that I found the first thing a bit unreasonable myself, but

Spoiler

I didn't want to use look because I thought that's too straightforward. Also picking up once was supposed to be in a way that suggests that she didn't want to be longer under the bed because of the coughs and it might be worth trying it out again...
[close]

But I thought number 2 and 3 are fine. Would you have preferred to

Spoiler

a) get the items by looking under the bed or
b) get the brush immediately when looking under the bed (i.e. not necessary to do repetitions) or
c) get the brush immediately when picking up under the bed (i.e. not necessary to do repetitions)

I also thought about calling the button "pick up/search", but that didn't fit
[close]

Did you think the other puzzles were reasonable?

Thanks,
Basti

Ah, thank you. I thought that with the password I could edit the game info, no matter who did it. Apparently that's wrong. :D

Sorry to open a new topic about it, but it seems that I am the only one who is that stupid...

I would like to edit the info for my game:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/Games.aspx/Detail/1609

but I cannot find a button anywhere on the page where to do so.. All the other people apparently did, but I'm obviously

a) blind
b) incredibly stupid
    or
c) ***** paste your insult here *****

It would be cool if someone would point that triviality out to me anyways :)

Cheers,

Thanks for trying it out :)

@Urania_Orwell:
Could you be a bit more specific, please? I tried to open all items in the inventory and didn't get an error (only too many unhandleds, maybe I'll write a bit more individually when I have some time ;) ) I also clicked OPEN on empty inventory squares, also no error. What happened in your case?

@sthomannch:
Thanks for the input! I'm happy you enjoyed it (laugh)
- The door problem is fixed (though pretty ad hoc and I still don't know how to fix it properly, but it works fine now).
- I forgot to set the hotspots for the inventory cursor (well, first timer :S). I did that now and you don't have to guess where the hotspots are anymore :)
- For the inventory items: USE is only used to use an item directly. If you want to use an item with something else, simply click on that item and it will automatically be in its USE-With-Something-Else mode.

I also fixed the Ramsey statement! Luckily no one complained about that so far :D

Completed Game Announcements / One Rainy Day
Mon 01/10/2012 03:26:20
I'm finished with my very first game with AGS and would like you to test it out a bit and tell me your thoughts.

It's rather short as I wanted to get to know the engine a bit, but I think it's still fun.

The graphics are taken to quite some extend from graphics available on Maniac Mansion Mania, I drew some myself, but since it' a first timer, mine are rather simple (although I do like my clouds). SoundFX are taken from sounddogs.com and soundjay.com. I made a music loop from Israel Kamakawio'ole for the starting screen and used the Amiga soundtracks of Simon the Sorcerer for ingame and Lost Patrol for the outro (I agree, it's sort of lame to have so much stuff not done by me, but I wanted to see how everything fits together and next time I'll do it all myself :D )

The story:
Our heroine is alone at home while a storm approaches. Can you help her to survive it?

It's basically a one room adventure, so it is not too long. I guess about 10mins.

Download it here:

Thanks to the forum and especially Khris for the technical support :D

Important keys:
F5 opens the menu.
ESC stops the cut scenes

There is also an alternative ending ;)

Thanks! Works like a charm

I couldn't find that command (probably because I thought it would start with eGA_ ). So I tried with mouse.Mode but that didn't help.

Is there a reason this has eMA as prefix and not eGA?

This is probably simple, but I cannot figure it out.

I'm using the Lucas Arts template and want to cover the whole floor in a room with different hotspots. The reason is that some of the hotspots are usable with items, but I don't want to give away these locations by being the only hotspots visible.

The problem is that the character now never moves anywhere, when I click goto and on the floor. I also don't want a fixed point as walk to, but the current cursor position.

Any ideas?

If you just want to have some frames last longer than others you could just use the ones you want to last longer more often and adjust the speed of the animation to suit your needs.

Like, if your cycle is c_1...c_8 and you need c_4 to last 1,5 times as long as the others, you could put

c_1c_1...c_3c_3c_4c_4c_4c_5c_5...c_8c_8 and double the speed of the animation.

Is that what you are asking?

If you still need some help and it's not too big, I'd help. I'm German as well.

In case it's rather big, would it be okay to just proofread part of it?

Hi,

I am currently trying to make a small lucas arts style game. Unfortunately, I have problems with combining 2 items. I have clicked on the items in the Inventory items menu. and used the lightning to get the according functions.

The functions are (just one, but they essentially are all the same):

function iNail_Interact()
{
  // LOOK AT
  if(UsedAction(eGA_LookAt)) {
    Unhandled();
  }
  // USE
  else if(UsedAction(eGA_Use)) {
    Unhandled();
  }
  // Push
  else if(UsedAction(eGA_Push)) {
    Unhandled();
  }
  // Pull
  else if(UsedAction(eGA_Pull)) {
    Unhandled();
  }
  //USE INV
  else if(UsedAction(eGA_UseInv)) {
    if (player.ActiveInventory == iHerman){
      player.Say("Mmh");
      Wait(20);
      player.FaceDirection(eDir_Down);
      player.Say("Well, I had this hamster Horst");
      player.Say("The emphasis is on had");
      }

else Unhandled();}

}

I checked it with the default game and to me, it looked the same. But whenever I try to combine 2 items nothing happens (i.e. cursor text goes back to blank and there is no output whatsoever).
Has anyone an idea why my script doesn't work?

Thanks a lot!
#20
Sorry if I sounded too negative. I just wanted to express what this game lacks.

I agree that some scripting parts are really nice and the curtain thing gives a good feeling. It just seems like the majority of the work went into scripting, not writing and that is a problem for this genre.

But I should add that I also enjoyed it. It's just too restrictive and, as the player, you are left quite puzzled.

I also think that a button that lets you review collected evidence (also from dialogues) would be a good addition. Making this would also help to get the story straight, because you have to think things over.

If you really want murder mystery I also wouldn't make it a requirement to collect all the clues and give a summary in the end that goes according to clues found. Maybe even conviction only if you found enough evidence...
