Critics' Lounge / Pixel Art Character Portrait
Sat 17/12/2022 06:51:45
I have been thinking of making a Quest for Glory-Esque Point & Click Adventure/RPG with turn-based combat. I want to include companion characters that would fight alongside you. In the party menu and during combat, you and the companion characters would be represented by portraits akin to old-school RPG games. An example is shown below.

I made this for practice.

Does anyone have any comments on what I can do to improve the look of this? I am pretty set on wanting the front-facing angle, but I want to know how to make this portrait look better.

Thank you

I am proud to announce that after working on and off this game since 2018, it is finally complete.
I present to you...

Slay the Dragon III

What was once a realm at peace is now under the threat of three terrifying dragons. As king, you must embark on an adventure to save your kingdom from these foul beasts.

I began working on this game in 2018 but took long gaps in production either from being busy or losing interest. However, now that it is done I am happy to share it with you. I've gone through the game pretty rigorously to catch any bugs or typos, but I am just one person. If you catch anything, let me know so I can fix it!

Converting the files to OGG seems to be working, thanks for the responses!

I loved Metaphobia so I have no doubt that this game will be great

I am having an issue with adding sound effects to my game. I have audio files in the sound effects folder that play in the little audio preview but when I call the audio to play in-game nothing happens. This happens with several of my files, yet some play just fine. There is music in the background, but I have it at a lower audio priority and a lower volume. Is there something wrong with the files themselves?

Quick update! The game can now be fully played from start to finished. I am now going back and adding in audio and extra look and interact descriptions for extra detail. I don’t know how long this process will take because I have finals coming up, but the game will definitely be released in June!

Will you have what it takes to slay the beastly fire dragon?

Here's my entry:

Imagine that an archeologist or a pirate finally uncovers the secret cavern containing what they've been seeking.

The three main areas of the game are basically complete (besides adding in extra look/interact descriptions)

All that's left now is to make the end sequence, finish up all of the dragon fights, and add sound!

@Hobo Great to see your interest! This game is much larger than the other ones. I planned out the entire game back when I first started working on it. The game has three main sections that are all about as long as Slay the Dragon II. The pictures I just posted are from a smaller section of the game that you need to complete before moving onto one of the big sections. I am now working on coding the last main area of the game, so I am pretty close to being complete. This game will also feature actually fights with the dragons, instead of the last two where you needed to solve a simple puzzle to defeat the dragon.

@Durq Thank you!

If you thought dragons were the only creatures inhabiting the world... you'd be wrong
