I can't find a working link for 'Righteous City Part 1'. Can anyone help?
Many thanks.

How will the 'check for updates' menu item work?

Will it just tell me that a new version is available and I have to download it manually or will it update for me? If it does update for me I assume it installs over the top of my current version or do I have the option of installing elsewhere? I am one of those who likes to keep their previous versions of AGS.

I borrowed a book from the library about 3 years ago on drawing sprites for computer games. It goes into a lot of detail and was very helpful. Anyhow it is now available as a free download. Ignore the fact that it is called 'Designing Arcade Computer Game Graphics' it is aimed at game graphics in general.

Interesting. Because my game on there 'Invincible Island' hadn't been discontinued. The original release was for a competition and had a lot of features still not finished when the deadline arrived. While they were charging for this release I was still working to make the game complete. It was definately not discontinued and I made it clear at the time that it was incomplete.

I released only 1 game last year.

Amoto's Puf

You may wish to consider nominating it in the non adventure game catagory.

I Think the post you are refering to was for my game 'Amotos Puf'. Rocco asked me if I could create a module for a high score table as he needed one for his game. I didn't write a module but I gave him the relevant scripts. The download link is below if you want it?

The high score table is actually a room file that is called whenever you need to view or enter a score in the table. I have included documentation, commented the code and included a room to test the table. It is coded in AGS 2.72.

Hope it helps.

I don't think Peder meant actually creating a graphic adventure for blind people, what he was asking how can you make a graphic adventure available to blind people as well as normal sighted people. This is why I suggested using a key to skip through the various hotspots to avoid the problems you mentioned.

Hi.

I was the creator of the one button game, Invincible Island.

Interesting idea. Here is what I would do.

1. There needs to be a game option to choose normal play or visually impaired play.
2. On entering a room give the player a full verbal description of everything there is to see. A brief description can be given on later visits to the same room but there needs to be a way to get the full description back, like pressing the 'Return' key. I would avoid using large scrolling rooms.
3. Use a left click for action and a right click for cycle cursor. The cursor would cycle between walk, look, use, talk and current held inventory item. This is the default setup anyway.
4. When the mouse is over a hotspot, object, exit, character etc. its name is spoken to the player.
5. To make these hotspots etc. easier to find they could be cycled through by pressing the spacebar. For example if you press space the mouse cursor would jump to the door and if you pressed it again it would jump to 'Dave the butcher'. Clicking the left button would carry out the desired action on this hotspot.
6. Tab could be used to open the inventory like it does in a lot of games. The right mouse button would cycle between look and use. The left button would select. The inventory would be scrolled through using the arrow keys with each name being spoken to the player. Tab closes the inventory window. The selected inventory will be the cursor and it will became the held inventory in the right click cycle.
7. I would recomend using a simpler conversation tree if you have visually impaired switched on. Instead of giving the player a set of questions or replies used forced conversation instead. ie. the player has no control of what is being said.

These are just a few ideas, There is a lot of room for improvement.

Good luck.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: DizzyAGE

Hi.

Apologies for bringing up an old thread but I have created a Dizzy game using this tool and if I had started a new thread there might me many people who didn't know what I was refering to.

The DizzyAge website hosted a competition to make a game with the software. I entered because I was intrigued to see how it stood up compared to AGS. But I am not going to give you a comparison because it's not fair. Why, because of the length of time that AGS has been developed into what we know it as. DizzyAge is still relatively new and therefore and is still lacking in features that we take for granted. But it is being worked on, a beta version of the next release is currently avaialable.

I have been scripting with AGS since the DOS only days and this is on a par with the current DizzyAGE. I hope Alex has the time, motivation and fan base to make DizzyAGE become the AGS of the Dizzy community.

Anyhow, here's my game to look at if your are a Dizzy fan. I decided to go for the 16 bit look of the Atari St and Commodore Amiga versions of the series. It's called 'Excalibur Dizzy'.

Download here or get more info, screenshots etc

Thank you for your time.

Hi.

Once again I have created a game that AGS wasn't designed for. (I will create an adventure game one day, honestly.)

It is a remake of a game originally released for the ZX Spectrum in 1988.

Use the cursor keys to collect all of the tokens in the maze whilst avoiding the computers motor scooter. The spacebar allows you to move at double speed and is also used to select menu options.

Thanks for looking.

It is a remake of a ZX Spectrum text adventure released way back 1983. Text adventures are now more commonly known as Interactive Fiction and were very popular on 8-bit computers like the Spectrum & C64.

UPDATED VERSION 22nd FEBRUARY 2007

I had a lot of feedback for this game, most of which was from people saying they couldn't work out how to play. This has been addressed. I have decided to still keep this as a one-switch game, I would rather start a new project than adding mouse support.

NEW FEATURES IN THIS VERSION

Increased locations from 38 to 60
Replaced some place-holder graphics
Added music
Added Instructions
Created an in-game tutorial
Wrote a walkthru with game map

General Discussion / Game Making Compo
Thu 15/02/2007 01:01:24
There is a retro remake competition on this Spanish forum.

http://computeremuzone.com/forum/index.php?c=9

The competition section is available in English as well as Spanish and there are over 5,000 euros worth of prizes to be won (best game, best graphics & best sound). The only drawback is the games have to be remakes of games originally created in Spain. There was a hell of a lot of text adventures to come from Spain which could be remade as point and click games and I thought this might be of interest to our Spanish members.

As 'cerveza' is the only Spanish word I know I'll be making an arcade or puzzle game. I got a lot of pleasure creating 'Bullet Train' for a compo last year even though it only came 47th.

Here is a link to a list of games created in Spain with screenshots and download links. There are even English versions of some games.

http://www.computeremuzone.com/juegos/games.php

I hope other non Spanish members find something of interest. It was a bit disapointing last year to find I was the only entry using AGS out of the 76 entries.

Happy coding.

Hi.

I don't seem to be able to find the full version of 'The Book of Spells'. The link on the GAC website just leads me to a blank screen.

I have the chapters as seperate games but would like the full release if possible.

Thanks.

I would like to put forward 'Bullet Train' as a possible contender for Best Non Adventure Game.

I downloaded this the other day, took a look at the first screen only as I didn't have time to play then. Then today I noticed you had released a new version (1.03) so I downloaded it with the intention of playing.

The game started in a different location than before and in my inventory was a rifle, gunpowder, a bullet and Ben. I then proceeded to my house where the starting cut scene played and there was the rifle and gunpowder waiting to be picked up.

Is this change to the game start intentional or have you accidently uploaded a 'test game' by mistake? I didn't continue playing in case it is a mistake and I ended up walking dead.

Looking forward to playing sometime,

Completed Game Announcements / Bullet Train
Fri 01/09/2006 17:53:50
This is my entry for the 2006 Retro Remakes Competition.

It is not an adventure remake but a side scrolling, shoot em up, maze game originally released on the Atari ST about 15 years ago. The reason I used AGS for an arcade game was because why not? Stick to what I know.

The aim of the game is to navigate your train through a maze of tracks and junctions whilst shooting at obstructions. Each level uses a room that is 22560 x 480. Are these the biggest AGS rooms yet? Does anybody know or even care?

The theme of the competition was accessability in a remake. Therefore I have made it so that you can play with the keyboard (left or right handed), the mouse or by a single switch for disabled gamers (mapped to the space bar). Some may remember I created 'Invincible Island' for disabled gamers in last years competition and came fourth so I thought it was important to include such a feature again. Personally, I think playing with the keyboard is easiest.

Credits : Scorpiorus for the snow- rain plugin (I think it adds to the game).

EDIT
===

This patch (45 Kb) fixes the bug brought to my attention below. The main link has been fixed so if you are downloading for the first time then you do not need the patch.
