"I was torn. I weighed the decision in my mind, but it was like my thoughts were having a drunken fist fight in a bar, smashed through a window, and tumbled out into the alleyway. But eventually, one of those brawlers emerged victorious, and told me to take the case of Lily DeForest. Let's see if this Blue Jay is as black and white as it seems, or if it will have me seeing red..."

Congrats to dactylopus! A beautiful elegant design, details that really fit the mood and genre, and I love the animation!

And cat, I love the style of your character! The real-life felt craft is a wonderful and unique look!

Both of your stories were incredible, too! Well-written noir tales with a lot of character! (I may have inadvertently added a fortnightly writing competition into this. Sorry about that! :) )

dactylopus, the next contest goes to you!

Well, now it's time to face the music. Two classy dames, each with their own sob story, but my handkerchief can only dry the tears of one of them. Who will it be?

1.) dactylopus: Lily DeForest

2.) cat: Fanny Flamingo

Cast your votes by October 16 to find out which story will be told in this big city!

"...But before I could take the case, the phone rang. It was my landlady, complaining about the rent again. I told her I was just about to get another job, and just needed a little more time. I had to beg, plead, cajole, coerce, and butter her up slicker than a Christmas turkey, but it worked. She gave me one more week to come up with the dough. I just hoped it would be enough time to crack this case."

Deadline extended by request!
New deadline: Oct 9

It was a hot day in September, too hot. When it's too hot, people commit fewer crimes, which is great for most people, but not me. I'm a detective. The leaves were falling from the trees, and I'd have to find a tree to live in myself if I didn't get a case soon. Then SHE walked in...

...or he, or they, or it, or whatever! Your mission is to create a film-noir character to enter the detective's office with a case to solve. A femme-fatale? A crime boss? A wounded street thug? An angry city official? A lost kitten? You decide! And to make it even more noir, entries should be in Black & White (that is, greyscale.) Don't forget to tell us why they want to hire the detective!

The contest will run until October 9, and then voting will continue until October 16. Happy Sleuthing!

Thank you!

Great job, everyone! I should have a new contest ready soon!

1.) Cassiebsg (2): "Bad" Luck. I like the detail on the cat, and it's in a classic Halloween pose. It also fits the theme very nicely. It could be fun (although mean) to see the effects of using "Bad Luck" on other characters!

2.) Reiter: Constant Companion. It has a surreal Dali/Magritte/David Lynch look and feel to it.

3.) Cassiebsg (1): "Good" Luck. Like the previous entry, it has nice detail and pixel-aesthetic, even with so few colors.

A few notes on the other entries: DBoyWheeler's entry is simple yet effective. The sharp bottom points of the star are reminiscent of icicles, very nice for an ice spell.

And Sallah's entry is a fun, goofy idea. I like the idea of having an "enthusiastic hands-on attitude" in your inventory, but I feel this is something of an inside-joke that was from before I joined the forums :)

Nice job everyone!

Hi, everyone, I know it's been a while on this topic, but i just wanted to give it a quick bump and remind arj0n they can still make a new contest if interested. Believe me, I know how busy things can get, and I know participation has been down, but I think some people would still be interested in more Coloring Balls. If you'd like to pass the torch to someone else who's willing, feel free to do so!

And a belated thank you for everyone's kind words on the trophies! They're tough to create sometimes, but fun to make!

Character design - Creamy
I like his sour expression. Even if he's a clown pirate, it's obvious he's not happy!

Creativity - Stylez75
A lot of really creepy combinations make this undead pirate scary and unsettling.

Artistic appeal - Iamarobot
There's a lot of great detail on the parrot, and even the tiny pirate shows a lot of character.

As pirates love life at sea, being buried alive in the desert was a particularly devious punishment for this pirate. But after his evil spirit was freed, he made the most of it and created a vessel that rose and fell with the dunes as if they were crashing waves, plundering caravan and ancient tomb alike for their treasures. So don't think it a mere tall tale if distant travelers tell you stories of ... the Pirate of the Sands.

Oh, is it just QI?

Quite correct! (The next shot probably would have had a blue whale.)

I hate to quash your guess, but no.

The 'old timey' diagrams make me instantly go to Look Around You, even though the graphic in the last image doesn't quite fit with the style of the show.

Quality guess, but no...

Big Fat Quiz?

Quite close! It's in that general area.

Here's a quick update: (It's hard to find a qualified screenshot that doesn't give it away)

<< Coloring Ball: Deep Sea Discovery

The ocean. Deep. Dark. Ominous. Who knows what creatures or marvels await us as these depths? Color the following shape into a wonder you find at the bottom of the sea.

[imgzoom]https://i.imgur.com/dkeX0LT.png[/imgzoom]

Standard rules apply. You may:
- Color the outline
- Use animation
- Rotate the image (90, 180, or 270 degrees) or flip it
- Use any color palette

And as always, please, no coloring outside the outline.

Good luck, deep sea divers!

Deadline: March 8

Great job, everyone, and congratulations, Creamy!

Creamy, sure, I can take the next one. Thank you! I should be able to create a new contest soon.

1st: Creamy. You've drawn a really cute couple, and I love the expressions on their faces!

2nd: Sinitrena. Very nice use of the shape, with a pretty and unique coloring style. It's a funny idea of someone just running by with a fish!

G-G-G-GHOSTS!

And they're...taking a bow? Well, bravo on a scare well done, I suppose. Maybe they're the ghosts from Hobo's Decaying Halloween Decorations?
